Sheila, One of my great grandfather's sisters married a McGregor from Indian Mound, TN. Her name is Lucy Walker, and she married Wiliam ("Willy") E. McGregor. Is this your family? Stan Magnesen Yelowstone@aol.com
Marsha: "What Wilson's? My mother was a Wilson." Wilsons are my husband's and are Canada>Michigan>Indiana - probably no connection unless yours from either MI or IN. Coral Lynn: "Sorry, my JONES from Henry co. is Nathaniel JONES b.5 Jun 1846" - Oh well, they'll show up sooner or later: Re your interest in CALDWELL: I do not have an Andrew Caldwell in my database and it is not a common name in our line. All the CALDWELLs I have are believed to have come from NC or VA (don't really know). The earliest is William Caldwell (1791-1845). William and two of his brothers identified as Preston and Robert all came to Henry Co. TN and stayed. Re JOHNSONs (boy are they a trip! Almost as good as Jones.)) - Again, I know none in Hawkins/Hancock Co and don't have a Levi in my database. My (3) lines are: Line #1 George Washington Johnson (b ca 1820-25 d. 1890 Elkhorn, Henry Co. TN) -m- Martha Jane Foster. Came from VA about time of Civil War. Line#2 Peter Benjamin Johnson (b ca 1770 d aft 1866, yep he did live to almost 100, have old family notes and stories that remember him!) -m- Nancy Hubbard. Family came VA>NC>Henry Co, TN. Died Henry Co. I have this line back a long way. Peter's father was Gideon, who had 9 kids, but no Levi. Line #3 James H. Pleasant Johnson (b ca 1850, Carroll Co, TN d, bef 1915 in either Nashville or Henry Co, TN) -m- Ella Rowena Harrison. Looks as if we just share some common surnames. Thanks for checking. Sheila, I don't know if any of this McGregor information will be helpful or not, not sure specifically what you want but will try a little. 1. In 1850 Stewart Census household 467 has Noah Mcgregor 38, Mahala 21, William 18, Elisabeth 15, Lucien 5, Marion 3 mo. and Nancy Simpson 40. Wonder if Noah is a brother to Joel? 2. March of 1810 deeds mentions some property of Bartlett's within it on the north side of the Cumberland River. Do you have marriage records and cemetery of Joel or do you need me to look? jan > > I've just joined the list - can someone help me with information about > Joel McGregor, b 7 Feb 1830, Indian Mound, Stewart Co, TENN to Bartlett > McGregor and Ann Harris. Marsha, Thanks for such a quick reply! Here is my MATHIS information that I have: Plez (Pleasant?) MATHIS was probably born in the mid 1800's and married Betty TURNBOLT or TURNBULL. The children I have for them are Ed, Annie, Birdie, Emma, and William Frank or Frank William MATHIS. Frank is my g grandfather, born 21 Aug 1882 in TN. He married Missouri Tennesse BYRD in 1904, but I don't know where. Frank and Tenny moved around alot between AR and MO finally settling in MI. The surviving MATHIS family all have different stories and ideas of where they came from and when things happened and I have come to a lot of dead ends. It is believed that either one of the MATHIS' or BYRD's came from a Cherokee tribe. Frank's birthplace could by Perry, TN; Perry Co. TN; Paris, TN; and possibly Stewart Co. TN. Frank and Tenny MATHIS children are: Theodore Nellie Belle born 1905 Homer Ed born 1907 Woodrow Wilson born 1913 Frankie Lucille born 1915 Mammie Marie born 1917 Rita Mae born 1922 Cecil Arb born 1925 (my grandfather) James Utah born 1926 Clydia Jewelldean born 1929 Hope our families connect! The Smith's were a large family and the Smith boys a little more rowdy than most and often mixed up in troublesome activities that most assuredly must have worried their momma! As they grew older they began to ride with a rough crowd. Often there would be brawls with another group of fellows from Houston County. One night the Smith Boys raided a party going on down near the Tennessee River and in the ensuing brawl a man was killed. Well, the Smith's rode home and hid out in a cave for a couple of days and their mom brought them meals. They knew a possee would form and look for them. One day a note came to the cave with their meals that told them it was time to move because if they didn't they would be caught. So in the middle of the night the entire family family packed up and moved near Oakalla in Burnet County Texas to avoid prosecution from the law. The Tennessee Lawmen never did find them and once they moved to Texas I was told they became law abiding citizens and good neighbors until their natural deaths.---- I got this story from my neighbor who lives on the old smith property. She gave me a newspaper clipping of an interview with Smith's grandson telling this story. I will be glad to scan the article to you if you would like. Have a great day! Hi Sue, A little history of the newspapers. Stewart County Times began in 1870 with J. E. Flood, a danged Yankee carpet-bagger, LOL!!!!, came to Dover and started it and called it the Dover Record. The paper kept on tho the name changed off and on. C.W. Crockett (incidentally the grandson of ole Davy himself who according to legend once made Stewart Co. a stompin ground) was owner in late 1870's. Called it the Dover Courier. Then there was a Dr. Stegar, a Will Ross and on and on with others until 1942 when it got sold to Leaf Chronicle. Anyhow has been called Stewart Co. Times since 1922. (was the Breeze for a while) Now Stewart-Houston Times. Information on Tn. State Library and Archive holdings of newspapers can be found at http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/pubsvs/paper-d.htm#Dover. Hope this helps you, jan ----- Original Message ----- From: Harry Buchanan <102477.1340@compuserve.com> To: <DanvilleCrossing-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 13, 1999 8:34 PM Subject: Dover Newspaper > Did Dover (Stewart Co) have a newspaper in the mid 1800's? I do not yet know my connection to the Pete DeBusk you mention from there, but inevitably all DeBusks are kin if you go back far enough. I have info on DeBusks back to the first one born in the country. And supposedly, before that, there were 3 French Huguenot brothers who were DeBusks who came to this country escaping the persecution of the Catholic Church's inquisition. So the answer would be yes, I just haven't established how close that connection is yet. Right now, I am mostly focusing on the group of DeBusks who came from VA to TN, Christopher Columbus DeBusk and Lydia (Blevins) DeBusk. I will keep your letter on file. If I find that connection, I will get back in contact with you. It may possibly be pretty far back. Thanks so much for your information! : ) Vanessa
Carolyn, I have out of town guest for this week, but as soon as I get a chance, I will check my database to see if perhaps I can help with the mysterous Cathey lady. I notice that Lucille and Jan are also questioning this situation. I will be back with you shortly. Anne
Sharon, I am not a direct line from Henry or John, but from George (1765) and George (1804). I have met Phylis and she is going to the Cathey reunion in NC in August. Hopefully, she will be able to get a lot of questions answered and share with all of us cousins when she returns. Anne
Brenda, I have a Barbary Barnes born about 1825? in TN, married Henry H. Wesson 1848 Benton County, TN.....she probably had a brother named Moses Barnes, born about 1820. I've heard the name as Burns too though.....don't know yet which it is. Do you have anything that might match? Linda Wesson
Vanessa, are you related to Pete DeBusk of Powell, TN?
