    1. HERNDON, YOUNG, CATHEY
    2. j
    3. Hiya Dave, My oh my have you opened up some mysteries. Well someone else on here will hafta help you with McKenzies...haven't crossed their paths yet. Only Dotys was what I told you. Hey ya reckon lockin my daughter in her room woulda kept her single???? Now HERNDON is another matter. Herndons neighbors to us in Stewart Co. yea back when my daddy was growing up and got some kin there too. Also got some secrets in the tree worth diggin out. Hang on and I will tell you on it: 1. First off my granny's sister Anna Elizabeth (Lizzie) Fitzhugh married Robert Townsend HERNDON, born 1880. Youngins were many. Robert was son of Thomas Jefferson Herndon and Mollie Knight. 2. Second off my granny's OTHER sister Martha YOUNG Fitzhugh married Fred Herndon. So ya see, the Herndons and the Fitzhughs big ole pals. Now the 64 dollar question is what is that YOUNG doin there, hmmm???? Martha and Lizzie's granddaddy and my ggg grandpapy was James YOUNG Fitzhugh...and I do not have a CLUE where he got that middle name, but I strongly suspect cause we have a Young family connection. If you can find it amidst your Herndons, Youngs and Catheys I will hug your everlovin neck and give you a munster smooch! CATHEY by the way is YET another mystery.... Grandpappy James Young Fitzhugh according to much information was married to Philadelphia McElroy...YET on many of children's death certificates their mama is listed as a...you got it, CATHEY!!!!! WHY??? What's up, doc? 3. Now I also got some other Herndon marry ins....like Jennie Herndon who married C.C. Whitford and the Whitfords marry into my line. 4. Lonnie Herndon who married Lavene Durham who is a Brake descendent, same as me. So ya see.....ya stirred up some mysteries for me comin up with names like Herndon-Young-Cathey all in the same mouth full.... thinkin maybe you might hold the key either now or later.... jan ----- Original Message ----- From: David L. I don't care for chain letters and the relegious/voodoo-like superstition that goes with it, and I expect that some do not want to receive some Christian message either, as there is probably more than one way -- in the minds and hearts of some -- to get into favor with the Almighty. Just hit the delete message and go on. Personally, I have picked up too much good from lurking on this list to resign from it. It far outweighs the other stuff. I would even vote to remove the pro gun stuff if I felt the anti gun crazies ever gave us a fair shake on the realities of that situation. 2. Subj: Mysteries Solved Date: 99-07-12 10:31:37 EDT From: gildent@email.msn.com (gildent) To: Fireseeker@aol.com Unfortunately, there aren't that many mysteries I have solved! Most I come across just remain mysterious much to my resolve for finding the answers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But, anyway, here's a little one. In 1899 Marcus Clayburn Gilmore married his new bride Julia Bone. His parents lived at the bottom of Cedar Hill on Bear Creek Road outside of Vanleer. Marcus built a new home for himself and his new bride starting the year they married. Family history passed down said that during the civil war a confederate soldier came to the site of this house to hide from the union soldiers searching for him. He was hidden in the root cellar, but was found anyway and shot . Well, I knew he couldn't have been hidden in the farm house that Marcus built because it wasn't there in the civil war. There are remains next to the farm house of an older house foundation, but I wondered who lived there since it wasn't Marcus or his parents. So I went to the courthouse in search of property titles, etc... and found that during the Civil War the property at the top of Cedar Hill was owned by the Nichols Family and was referred to as Nichol's Hill. So, it must have been the Nichol's that hid the soldier and owned the house that went on the foundation that is left today. Have a great day! 3. Just a note to add a little and clear up a little. Hiram was my GGGrandfather through his son Franklin Filmore Pierce (listed below as Franklin M. Pierce). One of his daughters by Sophia Annie Caraway was my grandmother Willie Blanche Pierce Martin. After F.F. died in 1891 his widow married his older brother James Riley Pierce whose wife had passed away in 1889. They had another daughter after they were married, so the girls were half- sisters as well as first cousins. I have been searching for information on the parents of Hiram (as well as the Greer line of his wife Kizziah) for many years. Family tradition has him as being born in NC and being either a full or 1/2 Indian who took the name PIERCE after arriving in Benton County around 1840. Anybody else heard this story? If so, let me know. Thanks! 3. Pat McAlpine, I checked with Lawrence Saunders, of the book committee, about submission policies. He stated that you may submit more that one article per family (meaning "your" household). You can do one on your grandparents, then another on Uncle Bill (provided he lives in a separate household), etc. Each individual article can include up to 500 words and 1 photo (additional words and photos for a nominal charge). Apparently, there is no limit to how many "individual articles" a person may submit. He did say, however, that all submissions will be printed at the discretion of the book committee. (i.e. more than one person submitting the same family information). I know what I am trying to say, if someone can explain this better, please do! 3. Carolyn, The Minerva Byrd Legate that I have (1890-1909), is the daughter of Gus Henry Bird (later changed to Byrd) and Almer Wyatt. I also found a brief history of this family. She is the sister of John Ed (b.1879), Tennie Edwards(b.1881), Alice Grizzard (b.1883), Clay Byrd (b.1885), Morris Byrd (b.1886), Nannie Lewis (b.1888), Tom Byrd (b.1892), Lula Atkins (b.1896), and Lena Atkins (b.1900). Most of the ten children married and lived their lives in the Cub Creek area. (This is near Indian Mound, TN. - north side of the Cumberland River). 3. CoraLynn, I too, am getting confused over what is directed and what I have answered. I do not know much on my MATHIS line and have been stuck for several years. The dates you sent are further back than I have so I don't know if they are related or not. This is what I have: My g grandfather - William Frank or Frank William MATHIS born 21 Aug 1882 in TN. Different family says it was Perry or Perry Co. or Paris, TN. He married Missouri Tennesse BYRD in 1904 and I don't know where. They moved around alot from TN to AR to MO and finally ended up in MI well after 1930. I do have all of their children and families. Missouri "Tenny" BYRD is the daughter of Cain BYRD and Mary J. PHIPPS. One of them is believed to be from a Cherokee tribe in TN. It is also believed that Cain was a pastor. William Frank MATHIS is the son of Plez (Pleasant?) MATHIS and Betty TURNBOLT or TURNBULL. I do not know where either of the were born but believe they were born around 1840-1860 and did reside in TN in the 1880's. Their other children that I have are Ed, Annie, Birdie, and Emma. I do not have any dates or places for them. I also do not know any of Plez's siblings or parents. Thanks for any help! This tree definately has root rot! Carolyn Mathis Jones

    1. CENSUS RECORDS for 1930-1990
    2. David L. Snow
    3. Post this again for some who aren't aware: - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------- Hi Folks, Got a "Brick Wall" on a more recent relative, you might try the Census Bureau. As you know, the 1920 Census is the last Federal Census open to public viewing due to the 72 year privacy wait (30 years for businesses). However, for a price, you can obtain information on select individuals (under certain conditions) for Census' thru 1990. The following instructions are from the Census Bureau. ============================================================ ==== AGE SEARCH SERVICE The Census Bureau provides an "age search" service to the public: We will search the confidential records from the Federal population censuses of 1930 to 1990 and issue an official transcript of the results (for a congressionally mandated fee). NOTE: Information can be released only to the named person, his/her heirs, or legal representatives. Individuals can use these transcripts, which may contain information on a person's age, sex, race, State or country of birth, and relationship to the householder, as evidence to qualify for social security and other retirement benefits, in making passport applications, to prove relationship in settling estates, in genealogy research, etc., or to satisfy other situations where a birth or other certificate may be needed but is not available. ============================================================ Age Search Fact Sheet - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FEE REQUIRED: $40 for a search of one census for one person only. Personal checks and money orders accepted. No credit cards. YEARS SEARCHED: 1910 through 1990. ACCESS: Census records with individual names are not on computer. They are on microfilm, arranged according to the address at the time of the census. Most agencies require the earliest census after the date of birth. REQUIRED: A completed BC-600 Application for Search of Census Records, signed by the person for whom the search is to be conducted. This person may authorize the results to be sent to another person/agency by also completing item 3 of the application. Minor children - Information regarding a child who has not yet reached the legal age of 18 may be obtained by written request of either parent or guardian. A guardian must provide a copy of the court order naming them as such. Mentally incompetent persons - Information regarding these persons may be obtained upon the written request of the legal representative, supported by a copy of the court order naming such legal representation. Deceased persons - the application must be signed by (1) a blood relative in the immediate family (parent, child, brother, sister, grandparent), (2) the surviving wife or husband, (3) the administrator or executor of the estate, or (4) a beneficiary by will or insurance. IN ALL CASES INVOLVING DECEASED PERSONS, a copy of the death certificate MUST be provided and the relationship to the deceased MUST be stated on the application. Legal representatives MUST also furnish a copy of the court order naming such legal representatives, and beneficiaries MUST furnish legal evidence of such beneficiary evidence. RESULTS: An official census transcript will list the person's name, relationship to household head, age at the time of the census, and state of birth. Citizenship will be provided if the person was foreign born. Single items of data such as occupation for Black Lung cases can be provided upon request. If a person is not found, a form will be sent with that information. Additional data on the same person (Full Schedule) - The full schedule is the complete one line entry of personal data recorded for that individual ONLY. This will be furnished in addition to the regular transcript. There is an additional charge of $10.00 for each full schedule. They are not available for 1970, 1980, and 1990. TIME INVOLVED: The normal processing time is 3 to 4 weeks. Cases are processed on a first in, first out basis. Passport and other priority cases can be processed in a week or less. To expedite, send by Next-Day Air via the Post Office or private carrier and enclose a pre-paid Express return envelope. Applications can be faxed to you. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Details and/or application furnished upon request. When I lived nearby I photocopied only parts clearly pertaining to my line, and now I'm nowhere close to the library. Anyway... She asserts that two groups of Sexton descendants who hadn't met one another had both preserved the tradition that William and his brother James immigrated to VA from Ireland, and that William's children were: Benjamin, who moved to TN; John, who fought in the Revolution and then moved to NC; William, who fought in the Revolution and then moved to KY with his wife Leah Free. She also cites Grayson Co, VA land deeds which name Benjamin, William, Archelous or Archibald, John, James, and Leah as being the children of a William Sexton. So none of this is a Bible record duly notarized and with witnesses, but it looks OK to this lazy man. I just want to know where in Ireland William was from. Oh, and I want to win a small lottery so I can get the librarians to copy the rest of that book for me :) While I didn't copy the section with Pryor, I do by accident have some of his children. Their entries show that Pryor is questionably the son of James. For what it's worth, p.69 of the book ends with "Lemuel," page 112 begins with "Will." The book is call number 929/H876h. None have told me they have proven his father. I believe Leah Free has also been researched. I have very little on Leah, some on William. And none on his father. Been searching for 7 years for Pryor Sextons father, who is suppose to be a brother to William, wife Leah. Dead ends, dead ends. Paula from Tulsa ______________________________

    3. Some of you GRAHAM & BREWER researchers may be interested in this: - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ------------------------------ Doug Purcell had written that he has learned there are some Graham Family Papers in the Special Collections Library at Duke U. Also that there is a manuscript about the Graham family written by James McNeill Johnson, location of which he was not certain. I would also be interested in seeing abstracts from both of these. I am searching for parents, siblings, ancestors, descendants of James Graham, b. ca. 1788 in South Carolina(?); married in Amite Co., Ms., 25 Feb. 1810 Ellender (Ellen) Brewer, b. ca. 1789 in North Carolina. She was dtr. of George Brewer of Ga. and Hannah Thompson of NC. James and Ellen settled in Washington Parish (county), La. Glad to share info about this couple's desc. Doris

Dec. 1873, d.July 1907 > > Any help connecting with descedants of these folks is appreciated. More info: Not much help but as a boy, I lived near Robert McKenzie. As I remember, he was big into trotting horses, and we used to hang around his barn to watch them. Don't remember if they had children. And more: Mr Mckenzie lived on Forest St.. At that time, I expect his backyard was out of the city limits. He had a large place with a exercise track for the horses. His property abutted the Mt. Olive Cemetery on the west. As I recall from a visit some years ago, the original house and land have been taken over and developed. They either had no children or else they were grown and had moved out.
