Fran, What is the name of the book? Carol
Jan, I just finished reading a book taken from the Tennessee Confederate veterans questionnaires. These were sent out by the TN State Library at two different times, 1915 and 1922, so to be helpful, your ancestor must have been alive or only recently deceased at that time. I have seen copies of the questions sent, and they would be a treasure trove of information. Names of grandparents, including maiden names; occupations of parents; just to list a few. These are in the State Library, but I don't know how they're indexed or if they're available on line. Some names were listed in the book, but not all, and the only one that looked familiar was Robert C. Pafford. He was referred to in a footnote. I think that a few Union veterans were included, but not many. The important criterion was that they were born or lived in Tennessee. This should be helpful to someone. Hi Marsha, My name, by the way, is MARKIN not Martin. It was originally Markyn in Wales and later England. Have no idea as to its origins. As to Hinchy, I doubt it would arise from where you suggest, since the word is spelled 'hEnchman'. I think you'll find Hinchy derives from a place name, similar to Sikes. As to Aycock . . . I won't hazard a guess for decorum's sake. heheheh Thanks for the note, I love that sort of stuff. Hello Dr. Martin: I am interested in name origins. My lines are diverse. Smotherman derived from English Smithyman. Obviously a Blacksmith or Smithy Sikes. English: Sike is a river and Sikes are people who lived by the river. Scottish: Stream flowing from a bog. American version I presume would be Riverrats. (Hahahaha) Got any ideas about Hinchey or Aycock. Both I believe are English. Would appriciate information. The only thing that jumps to mind for Hinchey is "hinchman" and the other one I have no clue. Marsha B. Marsha B.
The name COLLIER is one of many that arose from the individual's profession, like Wheeler, Smith, Hooper, Farmer, Wright, etc .... A 'collier' was a miner, specifically a COAL MINER. Such rosters as existed at the time might list a name as 'John, a collier' or in more streamlined fashion 'John---Collier'. Later translations of this would assume Collier to be the last name and the surname was born. I was teaching a group of 2nd graders about name origins once and, as usual, they come up with a question I couldn't answer. We'd just covered this part, about names arising from one's profession, when a little hand went up and a sweet little girl who obviously had been exposed to American history asked, "Dr. Markin, what did John Hancock's family do for a living?" Til next time. DocM -----Original Message----- From: David L. Hello People: My cousin is the undisputed champion of all things Smotherman in the USA. She swears by the software Family Gathering which just came out in a new version called Ultimate Family Tree (can download from website). She bought FTM's newest version and kept it two weeks before finding UFT and is now in the process of reentering. When her FG original file was ready to go to book, her harddrive crashed. Because the hardware was irretrievable, she had to get a new computer whose operating system would simply not accept her software. So even with backups sometime you just aren't safe. Kill a few trees and back it up on paper. UFT can be found by simply searching the web for Ultimate Family Tree. I am sorry that I can't give you the link right now, but they have a demo version you can have free for 30 days. It might be worth a try. Marsha orth a try. Marsha
If you all are talking about Family Tree Maker (FTM) loosing your data, I am in that club too! Even FTM technicians could not fix or open the files we retrieved before they were deleted. OOH, I got a free upgrade. Not worth all of the re-entering! -----Original Message----- From: Marietta Sexton <pollyanna@snowcrest.net> To: DanvilleCrossing-L@rootsweb.com <DanvilleCrossing-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, July 16, 1999 1:31 AM Subject: Re: John David DOTY >Dave, you mentioned that your FTM lost all your data. Hi Marietta, 'Crunched' it so bad, it's little pieces of garblty-gook. Really looks like the files been encrypted. What a mess............Saving Grace is I have a floppy disk backup I made not to long ago. Won't have to re-enter to much. Problem is I 'trashed' some of the original data after I had entered it. X(*&^%$#@ arrrgh. Folks need to be aware of a couple of problems that the 'computer' geeks never tell you about: a. Your computer has at least 2 little fans in them <one in the back by the power supply, and the other on the microprocesser>. After a few years of accumulated 'wear & tear' and dust, these fans may stop functioning. When that happens, your computer overheats and 'cooks' causing all kinds of strange things and 'crashes' to occur. Scrambled data files being the least of the problems. b. After thousands & thousands of file / data 'read & write' cycles, your harddrive is like a potholed filled country road after a thunderstorm. Fragmented files everywhere, eventually leading to the dreaded "This program has caused a fatal error and will be terminated" error message. I never believed this was possible just because of regular useage, but I've 'seen the light'. Only way out is to 'reformat' your harddrive and re-install your software on a regular basis. This is not an easy task, particularly if you don't have a 'backup' drive on which to store your data files. c. Due to really sloppy programming and the lousy Microsoft Windows interface, some programs don't interlace well in a multiplexed Windows environment. They don't like to run similtaneously with other programs and like to 'crash' when under those circumstances. Could be any number of things that causes the problem. On my system, Eudora didn't like to run with Netscape after a while and would 'crash' after reading a few emails. Only fixed the problem after reloading the system drivers. Apparently one of the 'drivers' had become corrupted. Anyway, it's really hard to tell what causes some of the problems & data losses you experience sometimes. Can't always assume it's the particular program software. Many times it can be traced back to a hardware problem. So I'll sit here, re-enter data, and 'bug' the list, ad nauseum, with questions about obscure family members because I lost the data and through the records away.
