    3. Toni: I have been in touch with Dallas for several years. We just can't seem to find out where Hiram/Kizziah come from or who they belong to. Is this your line also? Where do you fit in? As I said before, my line is from their youngest son Franklin Filmore and his wife Sophia Annie Caraway. Keep in touch. I will do the same. 3. Hi Will, I've got some additions and corrections to update, so give me a couple of days. This PIERCE thing really bugs me.....not sure why. Think it has to do with that little Mt. Vincent Cemetery sitting in someones front yard where Hiram & Kizziah Pierce and William & Elizabeth McKenzie are buried. Who puts a cemetery in there front yard ???????? Building was more than a home, something tells me. William was a staunch Methodist, so much so, he alienated himself from the rest of his family for it for a number of years. Strange thing is......it's just up the road from the missing 'Willow Point' Cemetery, that I was informed today, was apparently destroyed in the last 30 years or so, for a house trailer <wonder where the septic tank went. Remember some of you folks on this list have ancestors buried there.>. 'Like to spit some Beechnut in that dude's eye' as a start !!! I'll find 'im yet. Makes my blood boil, sorry. 3. I know we come back to this Pierce line stuff every few months or so... BUT IT AIN"T FINISHED YET. My interest in the Pierce lines stems from the significant amount of intermarrying with our McKenzie line. I have been able to identify 2 and possibly a 3rd distinct Pierce lines in the area. Unfortunately I have not been able to link them directly together, but I believe they are. Just haven't found the right source yet. I have the John Pierce - Rachel Ross line; the Hiram Pierce - Kizziah Greer line; and a William Pierce line <this is a different William than Pierce-Ross William Riley). My interest is in the following marriages: a. Hiram & Kizziah's daughter, Elizabeth, married William Lee McKenzie b. William Lee's brother, Malcomb, married John & Rachel's daughter, Mary Caroline. c. William Lee & Elizabeth's daughter, Nancy Caroline, married James Peyton Pierce, the son of Mary Caroline's brother, William Riley Pierce, the son of John & Rachel. d. Malcomb & Mary Caroline's son, John Malcomb, married Jenette Ellen Pierce, the daughter of Hiram & Kizziah's son <Elizabeth (nee Pierce) McKenzie's brother, 'Washington Moody' Pierce. This went on and on between these 3 families, but ALWAYS marrying across the different Pierce lines indicating <to me at least> that the 2 Pierce lines were NOT directly related, ie, John Pierce & Hiram Pierce being brothers. 1st cousins maybe, but not siblings. Have not found any descendants for the William Pierce line, so I really don't know if he was related to John or Hiram. I'd be more than happy to share with you what I have on these 3 lines if you would like. I have updating to do on them from some new research that would take a couple of days. But, let me know. 3. Well Folks, Appears the 500 plus folks on these genealogy lists don't know anything about the Pleasant Ridge CPC in northern Benton Co. near Big Sandy.......So I give you some info to maybe help 'jog' some memories: >From the CPC Archives: a. "Whereas the congregation has been organized according to the constitution of the church by Bro. H. Parks in Gibson County Tennessee Known by the name of Cool Spring also one by Bro. W.H. Guthrie in Benton County County Tenn. Known by the name of Mathewsons and they being present by their representatives (viz) D.R. Henderson and J.Z. Gilbert and being desirous to be taken under the care of this Presbytery and supplied with the means of grace and ordinances of the church Therefore resolved that said petitions be granted and said Brethern be invited to take seats as members of this Presbytery." [source: Minutes of Hopewell Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, September 1853, (met at Pleasant Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Weakley County, Tennessee) pages 161-162] You may well want to note that the congregation in Benton Co. was known as 'Mathewsons' and not Pleasant Hill or Pleasant Ridge. That wouldn't happen for sometime. The original name was Mathewsons. Where did the name 'Mathewsons' come from ????? b. "Representative from Mathisons Congregation --- Z. Childers < later known as Zacharia Childress> [source: Minutes of Hopewell Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, March 24, 1854, (met at Yorkville Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Gibson County, Tennessee) page 169.] c. "On motion the name of "Mathnsons Congregation" was changed to "Pleasant Ridge". [source: Minutes of Hopewell Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, March 27, 1854 page 176.] d. "Representative from Pleasant Ridge -- D. Graham [source: Minutes of Hopewell Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, October 6, 1854, (met at Pisgah Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Carroll County, Tennessee) page 177.] The minutes go on to thru 1943. Some of the representatives (with associated spellings) listed include: D. Graham, Z. Childress, Z.C. Childress, J(ohn) McKenzie, Elder Gilbert McKenzie, G.M. McKenzie, G. McKenzie, M. McKenzie, J.P. McKenzie Jog anyones memory ??? ........ Dave

    3. Hello Everyone: Bobbie and I have just returned from a refreshing week-long trip to Wisconsin for her 30 year high school reunion and her family reunion. Both were very successful. We had a beautiful meandering trip down the Mississippi River shoreline, and a three day stay at a beautiful park near Moline, IL. Well, as the subject line indicates, some of us do not know how to spell cemetery! Now, I remember when I had to look it up to make sure how to spell it. This word is probably one of the most misspelled word in the English language. Cemetery has NO "A" in it. You might ask why I think it is so important. Well, who spends more time in the cemetery than a genealogist, other than those for whom it was created. We also write about cemeteries and the information that we find in them. So, I thought it might be a good idea to have everyone on the list look closely at how they are spelling this important word. I remember all too well at being embarrassed at finding out that I had misspelled a word for years until someone corrected me. I am not a great speller either, so I am not looking down my nose at anyone. And, more than one of you have misspelled it, so I am not pointing my finger at anyone special. Just remember all the vowels are "E's." CEMETERY Hope everyone has a great week-end! Dan -- Have I, therefore, become your enemy, because I tell you the truth? I looked for over 2 years for my G-Grandfather Dixon Crossno Lindsey who my father said died in the Civil war in 1862 at shilo without sucess in any of the above units or any other Tenn unit altho I knew he was from the crooked Creek area (about 2 miles from Danville crossing) until I went to Washington D.C. to the NAT. Archives where I searched in vain until I lucked upon a young man who worked there who ask "if I had Looked under the Confederate outfits", in a seperate file for men and units NOT ASSIGNED to any state as they were Men from several states. and there I found he joined the Conf.on Jan 1,1862 at Danville,Tn. his unit was called the TENNESSEE VOLINTEER CALVARY 2nd div. CO "I" OF THE 1st CONF.Cavalry which had men from Tn.,KY.,AR.,&MISS.and they were in TRAINING on FEB,6,1862 when Fort Donaldson was attacted and were told to guard the R.R.Bridge at Danville which they did until a Union Gunboat forced them to retreat to Paris ,Tn. where they pertisipated in the "Battle for Paris ",on March 10,1862 and on april 2,1862 were ordered to report to Corrent,MISS and in rout on april 7,1862 Heard the Guns at Shilo but got there about 7 p.m. to late to fight that day and were assigned to Bedfort Forrest Cav. to protect the Retreat on the 8th & 9th they saw several skermashes and had several men injered. (all this is from other men in the 1st conf. Cav. Qustineer's letters and not in the Officional record). on April 28,1862 Duixon was missing from muster with a note "sich leave Danville", and the 1866 court record in Camden,Tn.for his widow states he died in Benton Co. in MAY 1862/3 it is not known how. The point is dont overlook the CONFEDERATE UNITS. if yours is not in any state unit.gabbie

    3. Here's a thread for someone....I actually ended up with this from my grandfathers stories. I believe that a Elizabeth Leek m. a William Brown. They had three children( Josephine 1848, Richard abt.1850, and Alice 1854) and Josephine (married in 1868) William Carrol Holliday. All in the Metropolis IL and Paducah, KY area But, on to the thread! Ora Leek(probably born 1910-1916) married a SEXTON in the Joppa, IL area before 1929. They had a son that died, as a young man, cleaning his gun. Ora and her husband moved to Sikeston, MO and establishd a successful hardware business. I believe the inventory they started with was from Ora's fathers old inventory. John(?) Leek had a large dry goods store in the Joppa, IL area and it had closed.Ora had two brothers we know of, James and E.O.. The brothers owned and/or operated a jewelery business in Kansas City. I would love to confirm the Leek and Brown parts of this puzzel!! Dennis
