When I was in Florence Alabama earlier this week, in order to get a copy of my GGrandfather's death certificate, all I had to do was go to the Health Dept, fill out a form and in about an hour they had it for me. Do you know if you can do the same thing here in Tennessee as long as the person died in TN? That really would make things so much simpler. Carol

Thanks, >> Leslie: Railroads have consolidated so many times in the recent past, they did not transfer old records, between them on former employees, usually just retain the current employees, and since Railroad retirement went into effect, send the necessary information to the Government, Railroad Retirement Board, and do away with old records. In 1884 RRR was not in effect, nor Social Security, therefore I am sure as far as railroad records go there would not be one unless you can find where it was in court for some reason, then it would be in the court records.. I have tried to get many records on older, retired or dismissed employees, that have since passed retirement age and they are basically non-existent. Now I can tell you this, Van Buren Arkansas only had two railroads at that time they were the Frisco (St. Louis and San Francisco) S.L.&S.F.. and the Missouri Pacific (M.P.), then just 6 miles away at Fort Smith Arkansas they had a branch line from the Kansas City Southern (K.C.S.) None of these at that time went to Indiana, so could not establish a connection with the two areas, ie Arkansas and Indiana. Ira --part1_c3f158dc.24d44c8d_boundary--

Gabbie, Thanks, that puts a face on some of these folks that up til now have just been names on a census form. It's always more fun to discover the people behind the names :) Do you have web access? If so, I've got all my Wheatley information at: http://www.members.tripod.com/~FoyFamily/Wheatley.htm Some of it still needs to be updated, for example, I need to clarify about Thomas and Samuel Wheatley (I believe Samuel was the father of Thomas and Thomas was the father of William "Billy" Wheatley.) I'm descended from Alex Scott "Matt" Wheatley and his wife Emma Kate Hunn through their daughter Jennie Kay Wheatley. If you don't have web access, I will mail you what I have. Gena

Hello Folks, After listening to all of the comments about the various cemeteries, I am prompted to ask if anyone knows where I could purchase copies of the cemetery books for Montgomery, Humphreys, Benton, Perry, Dickson, Stewart, and Cheatham counties? I have finally come to the realization that if I am going to track down my Rook line I am going to have to look beyond Montgomery county. Most of my Rooks had left (or died) Montgomery Co. by 1840. However, between 1800 and 1840 they lived in and around there---which means that some of them had to have been buried around the area also. I just spent a few days recently in Montgomery Co. and drove around several adjacent counties but I did not have any idea about who might be buried where. If you are on more than one list concerning these counties you will probably see this same msg. so I apologize to you ahead of time. If I get an answer as to where to purchase these books, I will let the list know. Thank you for your help. Jean Hancock in TX

Dave, I was not offended by your comments on the Willow Point Cemetery. I do think it is quite different to unknowingly miss one marker than to purposely omit an entire cemetery. I also know how you feel (well, not totally because I haven't stood and looked at the devastation) about the cemetery--some of my relatives may be buried there too. I guess with the damage done it will now be very difficult to find out. My relatives did live in that area. I think the treatment of this cemetery and the dishonor shown the people buried there and their families is horrible! I can't imagine allowing this to happen. I was under the impression that it was against the law to desecrate even one tombstone, let alone a whole cemetery. Just to clarify, I don't live in Benton Co, nor did I work on the cemetery project. I did, however, with my little project develop a healthy respect for the ones who do the work of transcribing for the books. Lillie
Saline Creek is still there! It flows into Lake Barkley near Bumpus Mills in the northern part of the county near Kentucky. This isn't meant to criticize anyone, but I have transcribed the tombstones in a cemetery near me and believe me it isn't an easy project. After doing this project, I can easily understand how a marker could get overlooked and some information not be totally correct that was taken from the old stones. I know I tried as hard as I could, since I was doing this because I wanted to, to get every stone, but the task isn't easy. Add to that the stones that you really have to work hard and use some imagination to transcribe. Some of the old stones, both marble and especially the handmade ones, are next to possible to read. I chose to do this because I know how much I appreciate being able to look on the Internet and see the names listed in cemeteries that would be impossible for me to visit. Just my two cents worth. Hi Lillie, Any one who 'tromps' thru a cemetery to record and save the information there is to be congratulated for their dedication and sharing attitude. There are not many folks that are willing to do it. The folks who surveyed the cemeteries in Benton Co. and produced their Cemetery Book, did an excellent job in total. They deserve more credit than they receive. They put in a trememdous amount of work into the Book and have gone largely unrewarded. I owe you and the list an explanation for I don't want you or anyone else associated with the larger project to view my frustration as an indictment of their efforts, quite the contrary: My criticism is limited to one cemetery. A very important cemetery to me. I waited with great anticipation for this particular cemetery to yield information that would solve many unanswered questions. Imagine my disappointment when the cemetery was not included in the Book. My anger developed when I questioned the individuals who located and surveyed the cemetery as to why it was not included. I spoke with the individuals involved with it's ommission face to face, eyeball to eyeball. When I finally located the cemetery and viewed it's condition, I was devastated. Imagine sitting in a bank office in Big Sandy discussing, with the 'cousin' who surveyed the cemetery, why the cemetery was not included, the current condition of the cemetery and the prior desecration all the while with a 'la-di-da', cavilier attitude while tears are streaming down my wife's face <her 3rd & 2g-grandparents are interned there>. This is my issue, and subsequently, my curse. It was indicated at the time, that a "Supplement" to the Cemetery Book would be published with corrections and additions. It's been 2 years. I haven't seen it. So, I'll make my own for this cemetery and publish it. I owe the folks buried there no less. If you feel I was 'picking on' or diminishing the efforts of cemetery recorders, please accept my apologises. That was not the case. I take my "hat off to them" and thank them profusely for their efforts. While the subject is cemeteries-- I still don't know where Able Jackson or his wives Clarissa Tomlinson Jackson and Parthenia Brown Jackson are buried. It should be somewhere in Humphreys County. I'm not even sure exactly where Able lived in Humphreys County. Able died 1857 not sure about his wives. I was having such a good time at the reunion that I didn't do much more than glance through some books at the libraries now I wish I'd looked harder. If anyone knows where Able is -- please let me know. Mary Russell bird@scrtc.com

Hi Ann, Yes they do, and I will post the appropriate statutes to the list later. In all fairness, the trailer was removed some time ago, BUT......................... At the time, leaning up against this trailer was an 'old' makeshift marker for an individual who now has a 'new marker' over in McRae's Chapel <along with the old marker>. How or why, I don't know. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts. Hi Dave and all: First I only worked on copying 3 small Cemeterys in the Book the William Lindsey Cem. at Faxon,The Wynn Cem near Faxon and the, COOPER Cem on the Lick Creek road, due to my health and other reasons. I know some people worked hard on the Cem. and did not want to leave ANY Grave out let alone any Cemetery out but there were others who only wanted to say they helped (you know what I mean) I dont think the willow point Cem. was left out intentionaly but was just overlooked. as for as the "White Trash", who damaged this cem. he should be punished! I have a semilar Cem.(THe Edward Lindsey Cem) near Big Sandy Edward was a Brother to my William and this Cem had ALL the Stones Removed and pilled up against a tree so the owner of the Farm could mow the area. I talked to several people who were descendants of Edward and they said they would help prosecute the man who did this. I contacted our Co attorney & Sheriff and we went to see it and spoke to the man that did it ( he didnt seam to Care at allabout the fact that No one could locate the Graves anymore) and he told us he had PERMITION to remove them from Edwards G G Grandchild who said she gave him permition to "mow the Cem but NOT to remove the Stones"then the Attorney said as it had been over 7 years since it happoned there was nothing we could do about it ! I talked to the descandants about this and no one seamed to care very much! I then told the Genealogy Soc. about it and they said they would help put up a fence around the Cem. if the Descandents would Put up a Memorial Stone with all the Names of everyone Known to be burried there.and this is where we stand now:: sad isnt it gabbie At 05:35 PM 7/28/99 -0700, you wrote: >Hi Gabbie, > >Thanks for the information on the Library being closed and when it is >expected to open. > >Thanks also for your offer to copy the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery from the >Cemetery Book, but I already own the book, so have the information.
