    3. >Sue, Will you please share with us the marker that is not listed in the cem. book so we may add it to the record? Thanks! Dorothy< There was one double marker that was not listed but which I was pretty sure was in this cemetery. They are my grandparents. It reads John Thomas Edney Annie Mary Edney May 24, 1865 Feb 16, 1876 Dec 20, 1923 Oct 27, 1957 also a couple of corrections The book shows Benny Edney son of J.T. & M.A. Edney born 9 April 1895 died 11 June 1902 We read the stone to say " " " " " " " " " died 11 Jul y 1907 These are the only stones we found that we could read. Do you have anybody in this cemetery or know anything of it's history? SueB

    3. Jan: Disregard first E-mail. I got this from Henry Colyer Sykes. His source was Beverly Ann Thomson of Bunker Hill, IL. It only says that they mariied in 1872 and that she was his second wife. As far as her children's names they are consistent with Sikes/Sykes naming patterns. But that is all I can tell you. If you have a way to look up births, see if you can find Sallie Ann Whitford born April 14, 1874 and/or William Henry Whitford Born September 24, 1875. She would then have died in early to mid October of that year. This then corresponds with the marriage date to Ms. Butler. He obviously wasted no time. Didn't wanna raise them younguns by hisself. (HAHA) It also gives time of death at or about 1894. I wonder if the 1880 census would shed some light on the whereabouts. I don't have access, does anyone else? I can only assume this was Stewart County, because she is my Arthurs daughter and they had migrated to Stewart County around 1850ish. Since some of these guys went to Henry County, that might also be a good looking place. Sorry I can't give you something more concrete. If you need anything else, I am here. 2. Dear Marsha, Thanks for your reply. I, too, feel Willis must have been quite a character! The 1880 Census shows son, James, 23 yrs. old, son David, 18 yrs. old, son Thomas, 17 yrs. old (these were by first wife, Elizabeth Orton), daughter, Sallie, 6 yrs. old, son Willie, 5 yrs. old and his sister, Polly, 60 yrs. old besides wife, Elizabeth Butler, 70 yrs. old. The other five children by Elizabeth Orton had already married by 1880. We have always laughed about his first child being born in 1838 and the last one (Willie) born in 1875. He was 63 yrs. old when Willie was born!!! Of course, Miranda was only 37. Poor thing must have had a hard life. I posted a query in Henry County a few moments ago. Thanks for suggesting it. Guess my head wasn't on straight! I should have thought of that before now. Again, thanks a lot. Carolyn Whitford

    2. Dear Marsha & Jan, Wow! What quick responses I received from you two! You are really on top of it! First, I must say I'm not sure how Elizabeth Campbell got in there. His first wife was Elizabeth Orton. The Orton Family Bible has been found and their marriage is recorded in it. They married Jan. 5, 1835 in Missouri. Somewhere I picked up his marriage to Miranda Sykes/Sikes as Jan 3, 1873. I believe it was at the Sykes/Sikes Family Reunion in Paris, TN. in 1993. After Miranda's death, I have him marrying Elizabeth Butler (the housekeeper) on Jan 8, 1876. Seems he liked to marry during the month of January! Anyway, the mystery has always been......where did he and Miranda marry? By the way, William Henry was my husband's grandfather. Sure wish some of the older folks were still around and could fill in our blanks for us. Thanks to both of you for your research and effort. Really appreciate you guys. The 1880 Census shows him married to Elizabeth Butler. Want a real hum-dinger to look for??? The father of Willis! Have never found when or where he was born, or his parent's names. I have always said he was born under a rock and married on a wagon train. Am beginning to believe I MAY BE RIGHT!! Well, that's enough of that! Thanks again. Carolyn Whitford

    3. In keeping with the cemetery theme - Does anyone have any information on the Arrington Cemetery in Humphreys Co. It's located near Bakerville between Sycamore Landing and Cuba Landing. This summer we managed to find it but it is on TVA land and heavily overgrown. I think we only found three markers that were legible, but found several broken and weathered markers. Anderson, "Humphrey Co Cemetery Records Vol I" gives these surnames ( Bell, Burcham, Crafton, Edney, Jackson, Tubbs) and says a great number of graves are marked with fieldstones. We couldn't find most of these but we found one marker that wasn't listed. From some of the notices I have read in the Bakerville Review it seems to have been a community burying ground before 1900 and I suspect that a number of my Edneys are buried there. Does anyone else have people buried there? Were there more markers at one time? Where does the name come from? SueB

If on foot, you still have to know it's back there to find it. I have been to the Cem. 5 times since 1995. It is in great disrepair - weeds & sapplings growing everywhere, one or two large trees down, fence broken down, no sign. Hope you or someone else recognizes some of these folks.
