In answer to Collen's question, my own father was born in 1906 in Humphreys Co and never had a birth certificate. He obtained a copy of the census nearest the year of his birth and used that has formal proof of his birth, it was all he had. It wasn't until the late 50's that he even needed that. So I know that brick wall we all eventually hit is only made harder because of not having birth certificates. Colleen: Hi, Genealogy research is so much fun and you learn quite a bit about history along the way. I thought I was good in history until I started researching my family. Boy, have I learned a lot! :) You had ask about not requiring birth certificates before 1904 and social security. My mother was born in 1925 and did not have a birth certificate until 1975. It makes you wonder how many of our relatives who may have been born without any type of documentation at all. Maybe some who may not have worked or applied for social security. Make the search even more challenging, as if we need more! Good luck in your digs! I know on this list, there are a bunch of good people just waiting to help when they can. I hope to be one of those who can contribute one day! Paulette Middle Tennessee Surnames: Cathey, Craft, Summers, and many more to be found :)
I bought my Humphreys County cemetery books from the Humphreys County Historical Society but I don't think they have any more. Jessie
There are a lot of Grimes, Briggs and a whole lot of Edwards listed in my Humphreys Co. cemetery books. I'll be glad to look them up for you. Do you have any first name of these people, if not I'll copy what's in them soon as I hear from you again. Also there are Edwards listed on the 1850 census of Humphreys Co. which is on line. Let me know what you want. Jessie

Her dad JAMES GARLAND CLINT JONES ran away at the age of 8, claiming his father or grandfather was very cruel to him. He never talked of his family after that. I have found his Mothers family, the BEECHAM/BEACHAM in HOUSTON CO. So I have been unable to trace one little stinking thing on LUM JONES. Pat > >
Pat I'm working on a Cynitha (Chassey) Jones who married a William Rogers and lived in Humphreys and Hickman Co., TN. Do you have any info on her? Thanks Sue
Thanks Ray! Although I don't know if I'm related to these people...I printed the whole thing out hoping someday I will find out that I am related to them. There was so much information in that bible! My luck I won't be related to them. hahha. Had a question here.....if Birth Certificates were not required before 1904...does that mean these people were allowed to use other forms of identification when filling out applications for social security? What about death certificates? Yes, Colleen, the cemetery look up would be in Stewart County. I guess the cemetery at the Church would be the First Christian Church of Dover Cemetery and I believe the other one down across from the National Cemetery is known as the Dover Cemetery. I'm not sure on this though, but anyone living there in Dover would know the names of these two. Talk to you later. I'd be glad to do lookups for you if I have the right books you need. I have the Humphreys Co. cemetery books and Vol. 1 & 2 of the Humphreys Co. Heritage books. Just give me names and dates if you have them. Jessie Hopwood e-mail [email protected]
