    1. [DC] Tracing Native American Ancesty Daily Tip...
    2. Cher
    3. This is especially helpful to Newbees... course if you arent interested ...just delete it... Cher TRACING NATIVE AMERICAN ANCESTRY The first step in tracing your Native American ancestry is determining which tribe your ancestors belonged to. You can start by locating the tribe that lived in the same area where your ancestors lived. One of the best places to begin your search is http://www.nativeamericanheritage.com/ You can also locate an old map of the area and find out if a reservation or village is noted on the map. Once you've determined the tribe, search the Internet for Web sites that relate to the tribe. Some of these sites may list a central office that keeps tribal records. The National Archives and Records Administration site, located at http://www.nara.gov/ is a good place to request records of specific tribes. --by Diana J. Please let your cousins and fellow researchers know about Danville Crossing, post to other lists that have folks in this area. Tell them to send e-mail to [email protected], placing "subscribe" in the subject line. You may wish to join some of the "sister lists", those associated with this area, working specific counties and that work well in partnership with Danville Crossing. 1. [DC] Recording Illegitimate or adopted Children on a family group sheet
    2. Cher
    3. Ever wondered how to handle this situation? Read on. Cher TipWorld - http://www.tipworld.com The Internet's #1 Source for Computer Tips, News, and Gossip Proudly presents: Genealogy RECORDING ILLEGITIMATE OR ADOPTED CHILDREN ON A FAMILY GROUP SHEET Many families have illegitimate or adopted children. Plotting the names of these children on a family group sheet can be a bit of a challenge. Most genealogy programs, including Family Tree Maker, give you the option of choosing additional relationships on a family group sheet. If a woman had a child from a prior relationship (whether married or not), choose Additional Spouse and add another family group sheet that names the father (sometimes left simply as "?") and the child who does not belong in the family "blood" group. You can then designate the relationship as Friends, Married, or Other. If a child is adopted and you consider him or her to be a blood relative or an absolute part of your family, include the child with the other children on the regular family group sheet. Be certain to include a note saying that the child was adopted, and provide as much information as possible so that others can search for more details if they need to. When you print the reports, the illegitimate or adopted children (if listed on a separate group sheet) will appear with the appropriate notes. The case is the same with the Additional Spouse option. --by Diana J. 3. Well, I'm not the right person for the job either! :^) I haven't been spending very much time on-line these days, what with 2 young boys both in soccer and a busy dh who travels a lot. I just wondered if anyone had actually found records this way, and if so, how. It looks to me on first glance to be more of a category search and not a specific surname search, but I didn't spend that much time on the site. If I do find the right way to search at NARA, I will be sure to post it to the list. Thanks for all you do, Cher! I am sure it is a big time commitment. LOCATING THE RECORDS OF MERCHANT SEAMEN Gathering information about men who traveled the waters as riverboat captains or merchant seamen can be difficult if you have only limited information to work with. 1. [DC] Important Listowner message
    2. Cher
    3. A Virus which appears to originate from Rootsweb has been mentioned on another list, here is Rootsweb's reply: A recent virus, and several imitations of it, may result in your receiving an e-mail (or a greeting card) with a virus attached, that appears to come from RootsWeb. This virus works by accessing the address book of an infected computer. It sends messages to everyone in the book using a forged return address (for instance, using RootsWeb in the return address). The subject line will be from a message that was recently received, making it even more credible. While it may appear to come from RootsWeb, that is only an illusion of the virus -- our address and the subject line is a forgery. What can you do? Protect yourself by never opening an attachment from someone you do not know or that looks suspicious. If you have an email from RootsWeb, and there is an attachment of any kind, don't open it. Use a virus protection program. Know what viruses are out there so you will recognize one when if you get it. There are sites that will help you, including those shown below. http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/ http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ http://www.stanford.edu/group/partners/hoaxes.shtml http://kumite.com/myths/ http://www.mcafee.com/centers/anti-virus/default2.asp http://www.europe.f-secure.com/v-descs/newapt.htm Remember, if you do not open the attachment, you can not get infected with the virus. Delete it. Then empty the trash bin to make sure it is gone. If you are using an e-mail program that stores attachments elsewhere on your computer, such as Eudora, find it there and delete it too. Remember, RootsWeb's mailing lists are filtered and attachments are not allowed. A virus that is distributed as an attachment will not reach you through a RootsWeb mailing list.

    1. [DC] Census lookup lists..interesting...
    2. Cher
    3. New list, might be worth checking out... looks similar to the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness Jan and I started a couple of years ago...It it works like that it will be a great deal! Cher Chief Digger Hello Everyone ! I have had to reword and rework the guidelines for the CENSUS-LOOKUP mailing lists and also include subscription instructions. I am sending these below. The lists have been growing like crazy since I created them three days ago and I expect the growth to continue as the word spreads. Please feel free to forward this to anyone you feel may be interested in joining. Of course the more people we have the more help we will be for each other. Please keep in mind that we are only a few days old and if your lookup request is not answered, try again in a week or two. Some of the state lists have already reached over 150 subscribers <G> Others have not been "advertised" as much and have fewer members. Hang in there and don't get discouraged if your not answered right away, these lists will be a great asset to our research after we reach the people and let them know that these lists are available. I am encouraging everyone to send this email to their surname and county mailing lists as well as to our cousins. Finally, If you have the material to help a fellow researcher, please use it. Thanks, Kelly (Subscription information at the end of this e-mail) Guidelines for posting to the lists: Established 11 October 2000 EMAIL SUBJECT LINES: COUNTY,YEAR,SURNAME NO FLAMING or you will be unsubbed without notice. By this I mean not only being rude or mean to each other but there will be NO and I do mean NO debating here about the Census Projects. This list is for everyone who wants to research. NO General requests such as "all Smiths in all counties" Be specific, Name the County, Family you are looking for and also the year. Try to supply as much info as possible. LIMIT your requests to ONE PER CENSUS YEAR and SURNAME My Mama taught me that Thank you and Please are always nice too :) A few people have emailed me asking how to sign up for the new lists and what to do. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. All lists are [email protected] [email protected] The XX is to be removed and the two letter abbreviation for the state you are looking in added in its place. Examples: MI-CENSUS-LO[email protected] [email protected] [email protected] 2. So, send an email to the one of your choice (make sure to have the state). Put NOTHING in the subject line. In the body of the email write only: subscribe Then send it on :) 3. POSTING to the new census lists: A. Send it to [email protected] (supply the two letter state code for the XX again) B: Subject line MUST have the following: County/Year/Surname Example: Saginaw/1850/Smith C: In the body of the email: List whom you are looking for. Supply as much information as you can. Birthplace, ages, occupation, etc. D: Mail it on! That's it folks :) I hope that helped. I have put the list of states and two letter codes below for you.
