Hi, For those that requested Stewart Co Hist Soc. book lookups I will be going to library Nov. 2. I have a full request list now, so any requests after this will have to wait. I've got my fingers crossed that I will find something for those that replied! Jeanne
hI, list, My husband had a ggrandfather named Alexander Peacock Clark, who lived in MO, m. to an Artemisia Williams. Married on Dec 24 or 25 don't have year. in Butler Mo. Had children in 1880-1890's. He remarried after first wife died around 1892. I'm wondering if Peacock could be a family name. I haven't found out alot on him yet. Thought it was worthwhile to check out the list because of chance he might have gone to Mo from TN like my ggrandfather's family. Anyone have info on this fellow? Jeanne

I recently discovered the parents of my step gg grandmother (Anne Martha Norfleet Peacock), who was from the Clarksville area. They were Starkey S. NORFLEET and Nancy W. PARKER. Nancy was born 28 Sep. 1797 in TN and died 7 Dec. 1870 in Clarksville. I have no ancestry info on her. Can you help me? Do we have a connection here? Jan, Once again (da n it all anyhow) I am sending you my heartfelt sympathy on the loss of your aunt. I wish that I could be there to offer you any help that I could but unfortunitly I cannot and I know that you will probably take charge and get things done. I know that this is hard for you and that you have been through alot with these aunts, so PLEASE take care of yourself while you are there, you need to continue sharing their "lives" with others to keep their hopes and memories alive. Don't wear yourself out please. My prayers are with you and your aunties, may they rest in peace and meet all of thos family members they have talked about and that you have shared with us. Hello michael: yes i will write. i do not write these things to solicit sympathy or such. it is my hope that my memories may trigger something in someone else with ties to that area; or to my family that can lead to them to share any thing they recall that may be the clues my siblings and i seek to help us solve some of these family mysteries. The names of many of the things I hear posted here are vaguely familiar from my childhood. Danville Crossing, Stewart co, Land Between The lakes..I recall my dad & his kin speaking of these places. I am told there are many small private cemetaries located on both the Tenn. & Ky. state sides of land Between the lakes. I believe my grandfather to be probably buried in one of them. As a small child; i recall a particular summer visit there. we were at my dad's Aunt Ida's home & the home of his cousin, Monico. I VIVIDLY RECALL standing on monico's porch as she gave my dad directions to locate the family cemetary where grandpa martis/Mardis was buried. It stands out for me because after receiving the directions; when we said goodbye, it was the first time in my life i ever saw my dad cry. It seemed to be we drove for a short distance, then got out and walked & walked. I recall being in a densely wooded area when we stepped off the road/pathway to enter the Cemetary. I recall my dad saying; " THIS IS YOUR GRANDPA MARTIS. THESE ARE HIS PEOPLE;... OUR KIN TINA TONA"*(MY KNICK NAME). (The two of my siblings that were on that trip with us were being boys, happily romping through the woods, chasing squirrels or such; so didn't get to hear this conversation.) I recall seeing several old fashioned headstones, and remember my dad pointing out his father's grave. It was a long one, Dad said grandpa was tall. it was marked at the head & foot only by rosebushes. I was only 9 or 10; the rest is vague flashes in my memory. Dad wanted to return the following summer to erect the headstone. that never occured because the following April in 1971; he received a phone call from his cousin Monico; that his Aunt Ida; (monico's mother); had passed away. Dad immediately left our home in Michigan to attend the funeral in Benton;Murray area of Kentucky. Dad never made it to the funeral. 15 miles outside of Benton, Dad was hit& killed instantly by a drunk driver. you can just imagine how this rocked a family to loose two of it's kin two days apart. Ida mae was one of only three people we were aware of that knew how to locate the cemetary. The other two were my father; and his cousin, Monico. Monico was so devistated by the loss of her mother & favorite cousin; my dad; she rarely spoke of it. (One of my brothers went down home several yrs. after this tragic loss & she still was unable to speak of it.) This past May; after many years of faithful service; Monico was called home. When i went down home for her funeral; none of the family i spoke too had any idea of where this cemetary could be located. so now here i am hoping to learn something of my family & their lives down there to :#1 leave a record of my family's proud heritage for my children, #2 to find my Grandfather's grave & see that a stone is erected. Blessings to all........... TWANA >From: [email protected] (Michael Brown) >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [DC] "old " Stewart Co Hist. Soc. Jeanette: thank you. My grandmother; & her sister & both had kin attending the Donaldson creek upper & lower creek schools. while down home in may; my second cousin & i drove through LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES. She was able to point out many spots where various homes, families & business once stood as she grew up there. When we visited the Land between the Lakes visitors center, My second cousin found a photo of her dad posted at the visitors center. I remember visits down home with my dad when i was young. He passed away while i was little, and i am just now finding my kin there & getting a chance to re-establish the long sought after family ties, and hopefully find answers to questions that have plaqued my siblings & i for many years. The biggest being the location of my grandpa William Mac mardis/Martis grave site. It was my father's dream to see a tomb stone be erected at his father's grave. dad died in 1971 before fulfilling that wish. It is the burning desire of my siblings and i to locate this private family cemetery & erect a tombstone on our Grandfather's grave. I see your last name is DUNCAN, it is the maiden name of my great-Grandmother; Sarah Jane DUNCAN Futrell. Other surnames in my line are: Martis/mardis,Futrell, Colson,DeLoach, Griffin; Hicks. Dear Twana, You have now joined a list of people that are either from "Land Between the Lakes"; live in "Land Between the Lakes" or have relatives from "Land Between the Lakes" and Stewart County. Me, I'm just a Stewart Countian. If you want to read some fascinating articles, check the archives and read some of Jan's writings about her ancestors that lived in that area and lost their farm when TVA took over the area. They will make you cry and smile. Jan is a wonderful storyteller to the point that you feel that you are actually there as it is all happening. Again, welcome to a list that has wonderful, giving and caring people. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. If we don't know the answer, someone usually knows someone else that does. Rambling now, so i will close. look forward to participating at this site.
