    3. I went up to Jefferson City MO., this last week to the Missouri State of Archives. They had a list of slaves in there, I didn't look into it but I sure we could submit our information there also, as well as research, (to our own states). But I want to share the web site with you all, and if any one knows other web sites for their state archives please send it across the link here for us all. **Missouri Archives web site= http://mosl.sos.state.mo.us **E-mail= [email protected] Good luck to you all, it does take a while to get into but there is information in there that doesn't cost any thing. 1. [DC] Slaves
    2. Speaking of slaves....how would you find out if your ancestors had slaves or not. Would that only be in wills, probate records, family bibles? I just traced back to the mid 1800's for one of my line and I started wondering about that. What was Stewert county like back then? Where there many plantations like in "Gone with the Wind"? Or were they mainly just regular farmers. Poor to middle class; Middle Class? She (M) Wilson Henry Stephens 12/22/1869-70 in Weakly Co. TN. I would like to know who her parents were and if they were some of the same family of these Craig's? 3. Jeanne, My GG Grandfather Dr. Rufus Wilie Peacock was in the 1850 Henry Co. TN census, and 1860 in Haywood Co. TN. His mother and siblings were in the 1850 Carroll Co., TN census. Other Peacocks were in Benton Co. and elsewhere in TN. Most came from NC. Rufus didn't move west, but to NJ, but others probably did. I do have a record in my database (believe it came fro Peacock Family Assn of the South info) showing Raiford and Amanda Peacock (b.Wayne Co., NC d.Macon Ga.) having a daughter Matilda as one of 13 children b. 1852, who married a Howard Clark, so this could be the ancestor. - Ray Date forwarded: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 12:55:44 -0700 From: "Raymond Millman" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [DC] Peacock Date sent: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 12:56:30 -0700 To: [email protected] Forwarded by: [email protected] Send reply to: [email protected] > hI, list, > My husband had a ggrandfather named Alexander Peacock Clark, who lived > in MO, m. to an Artemisia Williams. 3. I still haven't made the connection with my PEACOCK line, but if you go to www.familysearch.com and search on Josiah PEACOCK and spouse FRY, your people come up. Shows Florinda Fry as his second marriage. Shows no ancestry on him, but traces Florinda ancestry back from Benton Co., TN to Rowan Co., NC to Wingen, Alsace, Germany/France and traces that line back to 1610. Hope this helps. I'm still interested in any PEACOCK connection. 3. --WebTV-Mail-4105-1263 Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit Knox, I would continue to belabor the point, as my LUTHER ancestor, and GG Grandfather was sentenced to the Tennessee State Penitentiary for 4 years. His crime was "harboring slaves." The year was1855, pre-civil war. I think that in 1875 freed black slaves had the option to seek their fortune by moving away from the opression of their masters. Mind you, I think several hordes of those formerly called slaves, did not consider themselves "enslaved", and they chose to remain faithful "servants" to, at that late date, the only family they ever knew. This is only a semi-eduated theory, but I gave you my best shot. Many religious people chose not to hold slaves (On my father's side), but on my mother's side it was a way of life and, apparently, there wasn't intermarriage, known mal-treatment, or gross prejudice. They were treated like family, so much as the accepted mores of the day allowed. So, I believe that is was largely semantics that the will delineated slaves from the "other" family members. 1. [DC] Slaves listed on an 1875 will.

    3. I was looking over a will from South Carolina dated in 1875. There were 9 slaves listed along with their values. Any ideas as to why they would be listed on a will written 10 years after the end of the War Between the States? The will was a copy of the original, but I do not think the date was in error. Any ideas? Anybody ever seen this before? Thanks. Knox Martin
