    2. Jeanette Duncan
    3. Dear Penny, We know absolutely nothing about this Margaret Craig. Her name came up while searching for info on my great-grandfather, John Shelby Curry. According to the marriage records in Trigg County, I am making the assumption that she was born in Trigg County as she married Wiley Johnson in Trigg County and then married William Curry in Trigg County. I was hoping what with Trigg being just across the county line, and some Currys (my kin) ending up in Stewart County, there might be a connection through one of the lists. Thanks for any help you can provide. Jeanette Penny Wilson wrote: > Dear Jeanette, > Was your Margaret CRAIG from Stewart County TN? 1. [DC] Craig Surname
    2. Debbie Hammonds
    3. I have been watching with interest the exchange on the Craig surname. I am looking to tie my husband's Craig ancestor to his family as I have been stuck for many years. His name was Benjamin R. Craig, born about 1820 in Tennessee. He married Mary "Polly" Lewis on 20 March 1839 in Dickson Co., Tn. I believe he was probably from one of the surrounding counties but have not been able to connect him. Has anyone seen anything in their research of the Craig family that would be of help? Thanks. Debbie

    3. Message text written by INTERNET:[email protected] >there many plantations like in "Gone with the Wind"? Or were they mainly just regular farmers. Poor to middle class; Middle Class?< Last year I sat in on a seminar given by a history professor who had made a study of slave culture. One thing I remember was this- "If you were a slave you were most likely to be on a big plantation with hundreds of slaves." "If you were a slave owner you were most likely lower middle class and owned only one or two slaves." Put another way a lot of people had a few slaves but a few extremely wealthy people owned a lot of slaves. He was speaking about the south as a whole but I'd guess there weren't many very large plantations in the Danville area. Certainly no sugar cane, rice and probably no big cotton plantations. Hope this helps HarryB

    3. Dear Mary, My gr gr grandfather had a daughter named Martha ( not sure about Mary as a first name) but according to the 1850 Benton County TN census she was 11 yrs old and born in TN. She is my gr grandmother, M. Elizabeth Craig's sister. M. Elizabeth Craig married Thomas A. Watson in 1863 in Benton County. The 1850 Benton County TN census as far back with solid documentation I have on my Craig ancestors: Census info: Thomas Craig age 44 occupation: miller born in TN abt. 1806 Sarah (Allen) (2nd wife) age 37 born in NC Martha age 11 born in TN M. Elizabeth age 9 (my gr grandmother) born in TN These above two daughters are by Thomas's 1st unknown wife Angeline age 6 born in TN Charlotte age 1 born in TN Susan Craig (listed this way on census; may have been a relative) age 21 born in TN There were several other Craig's in Benton County and in Carrol County TN at this time and if you want the info please let me know and I will send it to you. Right off the top of my head in 1850 there was a Asa Craig in Carroll County TN, Charles Freeman Craig, and Eli Craig along with my Thomas in Benton County TN. During the early years of 1800 in this area of TN counties were formed out of each other ( Stewart, Humphreys and Benton) someone on this list probably knows a lot more about how and when they were formed than I do. Maybe someone would not care to explain how these counties formed from each other. I know there were Craig families at least 3 in the Stewart County & Humphreys County TN area during the early 1800's but not how they were related to each other. Seems like I read in some info about Craig's going to Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri and back and forth from IL to TN and Mo. Also, my Craig's were related and aquainted with the Pressons, Watsons, Cottinghams, possibly Wilsons, Wards, and Poyners and Greers. Do any of those names come up in your Craig's. I will be glad to share info with you because I would love to know about my Craig's also. Who knows, there may be a link! 3. Dear Jeanette, Was your Margaret CRAIG from Stewart County TN? If you might tell me something about your CRAIG side, like migration or some other Craig's I might be able to help you more. Some of the CRAIG's that were in Stewart County TN went to IL and some in Humphreys County TN (in same area ) around 1820 went to Alabama. Was she born a CRaig or ended up marrying a Craig. If you can give me a little more info I might can help you or forward this to a cousin up in TN who might have some info. Looking forward to hearing from you. 3. There is census microfilm at the Natl. Archives with Slave Schedules and their owners. I always rent my own census reels from Natl. Archives Rental and view them at home. One time I ordered the wrong number and it was the slave schedule. I'm not sure if it was Montgomery or Stewart but I just checked my book again and they both had a slave schedule for 1860. Whichever one I had, showed Samuel Smith had lots of slaves. 2. Hello, Some of my folks had slaves. I have found them in Wills, documents where they were sold, and books. I keep a list of them in the notes of the person that owned them in my Genealogy. In fact one of my Ancestors (Lewis Coon) set one of his slaves free in 1812 in Mississippi and the Free slave acquired at least one slave. That is in Court Records. My gggggrandfather in front of the Sheriff and other men was handed the money to pay for the slave because the towns people wouldn't let the free slave pay for the bought slave himself. The free slave "Ceaser " became quite wealthy. He paid off his freedom to the descendents of Lewis Coon by working for them for a time or paid them 200 cash. My ggggrandfather & mother was paid 200 dollars. Robbie

    1. Re: [DC] Slaves
    2. I believe it was still very rural back then, with lots of poor people, and middle class. I know my Wallace's must have had some Money around the Civil War, as that Picture of Axium Green Wallace that Gene Wallace posted on the Stewart County website, shows everyone well dressed, and wearing SHOES. Looks like Axium was pretty well off. About the slaves, well I know that Ethelred Wallace had some, because he was parting them out in his Will. Funny story...I was 16 and visiting my Grandparents when they were living in Trigg County. There was a few cemeteries down the road, and I decided to check it out. So im looking through this cemetery, and I noticed there was a slave cemetery, right over the fence next to me, in a cow pasture. The cows looked pretty docile so I hopped the fence for a quick look (hey I was a teen, what's trespassing LMAO). So I was absorbed in dates and what not and all of a sudden I heard a loud snort behind me. I turned around and LO and BEHOLD A GIGANTIC BLACK BULL was about 10 feet away from me, tail sticking straight up in the air and and boy he had some big horns. Naturally I was wearing a red Jumpsuit. He Charged. I dove through the fence and ran ran ran. Taught me a lesson, always ask for permission before you go snooping!!! much love to everyone Erika
