    3. Maybe. I know that Larkin and Nancy (Slaughter) Yarber had several children based on census data, but the only one I know for certain is Ellender. I'm pretty sure one sister was Emeline, but don't know other siblings. I wish I did know. 3. Here is an interesting subject..and some options for you folks looking for Jewish Ancestors. Remember, if you arent interested.. just delete it.. that simple! Cher And now for today's tip... JEWISH ANCESTRY: LOCATING RECORDS Trying to research Jewish ancestry may seem impossible if the records you need have been destroyed. Your first task is to find out if any alternative records exist. An extremely helpful site for locating resources is the Jewish Roots Ring, which is located at http://pw1.netcom.com/~barrison/jewgenwebring.html Another great site is Stammbaum, The Journal of German-Jewish Genealogical Research: http://www.jewishgen.org/stammbaum/ For databases of surnames and towns, and lists of other resources, go to JewishGen: http://www.jewishgen.org/ --by Diana J. Muir ---------------------------------------------- Born and raised in Iowa, Diana Muir began studying genealogy at the age of 18 and has subsequently taught genealogy and conducted research for 30 years. Specializing in the Midwestern United States, she has also done extensive research in Southern and Eastern States, as well as England and Ireland. Diana operates an online K-12 and post-secondary school on the Internet, Porta School, Inc., and maintains her own Web page--Mother Hubbard's Cupboard--at http://www.rootsweb.com/~genclass/ which offers eight online genealogy courses.

    2. Hi everybody, I am new to genealogy and would appreciate any pointers that anyone wants to offer. I have been on the Dickson list for a couple of weeks and this list was recommended also. I am helping my children research their family (started as a school project and turned into this!! lol). We are looking for their 2nd Great-grandfather Fletcher C. Hall b. 21 Oct 1881 d. 09 July 1930 (buried at Hutton Cemetery in White Bluff) 1st wife Florence Pack-(don't know the dates of marriage or divorce) 2nd wife Willie J. Pack (yes, Florence's sister.........don't ask lol) Fletcher Hall was the father to Earl Dennis Hall who was the Road Commissioner of Dickson County for some year's (I think in the 50's and 60's?) Earl Hall also owned Hall's Grocery store near the Harpeth River on Ashland City Hwy 250 near the Dickson/Cheatham County line. If anyone has information on Fletcher Hall we would appreciate it. I have asked the family who his parents were and no one seems to know. Thank you, Becca

    3. I know that my 3rd Gr. Grandmother had 2 brothers in Henry Co., TN. that had slaves. I believe it was on the 1850 slave index schedules that the one brother had 20 some slaves and the other had almost 60. The brother who had almost 60 had already by this time, deeded several slaves to each of his children when they were married. (I have copies of some of the deeds) I have heard, though not been able to verify, that he had many more in abt. the 1840's. I also have copies of court papers filed upon his death, listing the names and ages of the slaves still in the possession of the family. This was in the 1850's and he still had almost 60. If anyone is researching the HAGLER name from Henry Co., and would like a list of the names and ages of the slaves from the will, I would send a e-mail with this information. Does anyone on this list know if there are any sort of archives or other resources that may have salvaged any of the plantation books from Henry Co., TN. 2. Michael Carlson
    3. Dallas, Would you by any chance have a Calvin Craig in any of your Craig records? I don't know much about him yet, but he was buried in Cartersville, IL (Craig Cemetery) in 1894. He fought for the Union Army in the Civil War (31st Infantry). He happens to tie into my Presson family that seem to have traveled back and forth from Williamson/Jackson Counties in IL to Benton/Henry Counties in TN. Thanks, Patricia

    3. Beth, Look to the Gray and Buchanan families of Stewart & Henry Co's for your answers. David Gray from NC was the 'patriarch' and owned land in both Stewart & Henry Co's (Paris & Buchanan Landings for ones). Made his wealth by owning the ferry over the Tennessee River. His family lived on both sides of the River. Married one of his descandents........one of my most favorite mistakes. 3. Check the 1850 & 60 Census for 'slave' owners...... Benton Co. had few slaves...to damn poor....Rushing's held most. 5 times the number were held in Henry Co.........same attitudes today as 150 years ago. 1. [DC] 1875 will lkisting slaves
    2. Clay Futrell
    3. I read the posting about the 187 will mentioning slaves with interest. The practice of the writing of wills was very different in the 1800s. The person writing the will would go to the county seat on the day(s) that there was a clerk (often the local preacher or someone else who could write) available. The person leaving the will would tell the clerk what he want in the will, the clerk would write the will in the court record book, and the person would sign (often with an "x")along with witnesses. In fact it is not unusual for see wills that were recorded in the court records several years after the person had died, with the information for the content of the will coming from witnesses. Then, sometimes days or sometimes years, there would normally be probate of the will. This too was often entered years later. When reading these old wills, the date of probate is often confused with the date of the will. Thus, it may well be that the 1875 date was actually the date of probate or the date that the probate was entered into the court ledger. At any rate, it is very unlikely that anyone, even in rural Tennessee, would have included salves in a will actually written in 1875. And, no, there was nothing remotely like Tara (Gone with the wind) in Stewart Co TN in 1875 or 1975 or 2000. Clay Futrell __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
