Cher, May I go on record as saying that without Cher Adams, Jan Phillpott, and Ira Bell, genealogy research in Middle and Eastern Tennessee would be almost non-existant ! You've done nothing to be ashamed of, or upset about. Just write it off as "Sour Grapes" and go on back to doing the fantastic job you've always done. And don't think the rest of us don't know and appreciate all your hard work, WE DO ! My great grandfather died of Pellagra also in Memphis Tenn. He was from Paris. It shows him in the Wallace Sanatorium being under dr. care for one month in 1926. He was Albert Cherry, son of Lafayette Cherry and Jennie Martin. Guess this was more common than I thought. Suzanne W

Cher: Now there you go again, don't let someone shake your tree, You as well as I know when your TOPS in your field ( and you are) the higher up that totem pole you go, the easier it is to see you. (I cleaned it up). So those lesser lights, are going to take your high standing, and take a few pot shots just out of jealously, Wishing they could attain that position. So just ignore them and consider the source. Keep doing just what you are doing, you and one of the best. Cher...ole pal...as I have told you many times, folks who have been around a while know the good stuff you are made of, the innovations you come up with and appreciate it. And the new ones have a treat in store!!!! And one of these days, we are gonna be mutt and jeff again and show em how much help we can really be....life just crept in and caught us unawares and we are having to focus on family at home right now...but you waitcha, folks! That Cher can come up with more sources than Carter had liver pills or something like that.... and that Yellow Creek reprint is just ONE example of many...SHEESH, she makes me tired... <BG> jan
Cher: I wouldn't worry about it. You've done your part in contacting the supposedly offended party. If he/she doesn't reply, there must be more talk than ground to stand on. You do a great job, and no matter what a person does, with whatever amount of integrity, there's always someone there to try to tear you down. But those people, thankfully are few and limited in number. They just tend to be louder than the rest of us. I haven't written before to commend you folks on the fine job you do, but now I am and urge other silent subscribers to do the same. My wife is a descendant of David Benton, the man for whom Benton County, TN was named. We have relatives in the area and are natives of Western KY ourselves, and found the people of Benton County to be ever so nice when we visited there in April for a genealogical society meeting. Benton Co. is fortunate to have such an active and viable organization. But again, great job with DC. Keep up the good work!!! And don't let the complainers get you down. Larry Weatherford
Cher, I am clueless as to what this other person's gripe is......... But I wanted you to know that even though I am new to the list and am "taking" (asking) and not contributing, I hope to be in the position to do so someday. You have been nothing but kind, informative, occasionally funny (lol) and truly happy when someone find's a cousin. It's people doing what you do (time and effort) that helps people like me. So.........if anyone has anything bad to say about you perhaps they should GET A LIFE! Thank you for being you. Becca
Cher, I can only imagine that the culprits out there are anticipating a reactionary response from you. Do you get my drift??? It just seems they are trying to elicit from you a shocked and bewildered reaction. "Bewildered" literally means, "AT SEA", and you certainly are on "TERRA FIRMA".... Both feet are on the ground, as I see it, friend................ Best Regards!!!! Mike in CA., Michael David Brown Bakersfield Brigade
Hey Pancho....... Thicken' your skin....know that what you have accomplished speaks for itself. No need to defend what you have already proved. Whiners only attack that which demonstrates their own weakness..... Venting is OK !!!! We all understand your frustration with ignorance and stupidity. You've done well.......they honor you by their attacks......they prove your superiority by they endeavors.... Remember......mature folks understand actions of this nature for what it is.....childish.....and treat the originators accordingly. Let me know if you need help......Keep the faith Girl.....this will pass and you be stronger in the end. We certainly do know and appriciate you!!!!!!! You are the best! You are the heart and soul of this list and have made it what it is today!!! I have been on this list just about since the start of it and have nothing but praise and amazement at your dedication!!!!! I feel certain that anyone who thinks otherwise deserves a Wet Willie (learned that one from the kids, they lick their finger and then stick it in their ear if they hear something they don't like---Don't ask me who thought that up, but it seems appropriate here!) Hi Linda, This is what I know about the HAMPTON family. The youngest HUDSON daughter, Cora (b 1857 TN; d 1939 unknown location) married Thomas Marion HAMPTON in Obion Co., TN in 1880. Thomas was born bet. 1849 and 1854 in Tennessee; d 1891 unknown location). He was the son of H. HAMPTON and Dilla ? both born in TN. Following is census information from Obion Co., TN: Source: 1860 Dist. 13: 1202. H. Hampton, 40, m, farmer, rv 2500, pv 4000, TN; D., 25, f, TN; T. M., 11, m, TN; J. P., 7, m, TN; M. A., 2, f, TN Source: 1870 Obion Co., TN Census, 0238a, Union City & Troy District 13, Family 426, Dwelling 426 lines 22-27. H. Hampton, Head of House, age 50, M, W, Farmer, value of Real Estate $4,000, value of personal estate $1,000, born TN; wife Dilla, age 35, F, W, keeping house, born TN; son Thomas M., age 19, M, W, farm laborer, born TN; son Joel P., age 17, M, W, farm laborer, born TN; daughter Mary A., age 12, F, W, born TN; daughter Ella, age 3, F, W, born TN. Also, Mary Solomon <[email protected]> 1 Sept. 1, 2000 provided the following. "Could this be the marriage for your H. HAMPTON? Hardin HAMPTON married Delia E. PIGG on 25 May 1848 in Lincoln County, TN." I think Mary is right; this is probably the same couple. Source: 1880 Obion Co., TN Census, 106-19, Civil Dist. 3, Family 166, Dwelling 166. Hampton, Thomas M., age 26, M, W, Farmer, married within the year, born TN, parents born TN, can read & write; wife, Cora, age 23, F, W, Keeping House, married within the year, born TN, parents born TN, can read & write; Hudson, Mary P., age 59, F, W, mother-in-law, born TN, father born NC, mother born GA, can read & write. (Note: Thomas & Cora Hudson HAMPTON and Mary P. HUDSON were living next door to my g-grandfather, Waller B. HUDSON. In fact it may have been Waller's land.) Living next door to Thomas Hampton in 1880 was John KILLIAN, dwelling & family #167. John was 66 years old, M, W, born TN, Farmer; no birth place listed for his parents. His wife's name was hard to read, prob. Clairadora or Christina or something like that. She was 59, F, W born TN, parents born GA, Keeping House. Hampton, William A., age 23, M, W, born TN, Farmer, no birth place listed for his parents. Also in the 1880 Census was a Richard Hampton/Kampton (hard to read) age 27, laborer, born TN; father VA; mother NC in the household of Robert P. Maxwell (Civil Dist. ? probably 8) dwelling 262 and family 265. Thomas M. HAMPTON and Cora HUDSON Hampton had two children. Burse Isabell and Tom who were born after 1881. Tom died as a child. I don't know what happened to Burse Isabell. Thomas and Cora are buried in the Antioch Union Church Cemetery, Obion County, Tennessee but I don't know where Cora lived during the last years of her life. I will check to see if I can find any other HAMPTON information and get back to you if I do. Hi Colleen' Pellagra is a niacin deficiency disorder, that is characterized by the three "D"s...Diarrhea, Dermatitis, and Dementia. That's what they told us in nursing school twenty plus years ago. Early in the last century, pellagra was common in the Southern US among the poor who subsisted on corn-based diets. It seems that the niacin in corn is in a bound form, that cannot be absorbed by the body. Since the discovery of the cause of Pellagra, flours have been enriched with niacin, and the incidence of Pellagra has decreased dramatically. However in Asia and Africa Pellagra still occurs among the general population. It was common pratice to commit victims of Pellagra to mental institutions, for the confusion, anxiety, and paranoia that developed as a result of niacin deficiency. If I can be of any more help, let me know. Janice
