Does anyone have any information on the Daniel family that settled in Bond/Fayette counties of Illinois prior to 1818? They came to Illinois via Tennessee (abt 1812) from North Carolina. William Daniel ( 3rd Great-Grandfather) was born about 1783 in North Carolina and married Sarah Matheny abt 1817 in Montgomery Co., TN. He had 4 dau and 5 sons, William Jr., Ewing, Barton, Henry James (my 2nd Great-Grandfather) and Robert. Living near him in the 1820 census are Robert, Martin, Barton, Jeremiah, and Delila. I think that Robert, Martin, and Barton maybe his brothers. Jeremiah and Delila are older. Jeremiah the elder does not show up after 1820 in the census. Does any one know where in North Carolina this family originated from or who Delila was married to? Martin states in one of the census that he was born in North Carolina on the state line. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Diane Clark
Hi, This may or may not be any help but the William DANIEL Sr. (1760-1832) and Pricilla ANDREWS Family of Pitt County, NC had a Delilah DANIEL. William's father was also named Robert DANIEL. David DANIEL (1783-1857), their son, moved to Stewart County, TN. There was a Martin DANIEL born ABt 1770, probably in Granville County, NC, the son of Col. John Williams DANIEL. Col. DANIEL died in Warren County, NC. BARTON is not a name I have a lot of information on but I do show it tied to a McCOY family of Scotland, later Wilkes County, GA. I do not show any TN or NC connections to this BARTON family but maybe someone else has some more pertinent information. Sorry, I cannot help you more. I will tell you that lots of NC folks moved through SC to GA and then on to TN and KY as they opened up for settlement. Some also moved to central TN straight from western areas of VA and then headed up north to KY and OH, as they opened up. However, I am sure you know the general migration path to OH, IN and IL was via of road that ran from Philadelphia to Pittsburg to Dayton and then points west west. However a lot of KY and TN folks were some of the earliest settlers of southern OH and I am sure the same also goes for IN and IL, which seems to match the migration path of your bunch to a tee. However, I am sure you are aware the western frontier of the US during the War of 1812 was just about along a north-south line running through Miami and Shelby County, OH. Any point to the west of that area would have been real "iffy" in the 1812 time frame, due to the Indian raids being conducted by the English and their Indian allies during this war. I am also sure you are also aware the war along the western frontier during the War of 1812 was mostly one of defeat for the Americans. Hull surrendered Detroit and we got banged around pretty hard in this area by the British and their Indian allies, with a few exceptions, Harrison, et. al.. I will tell you the people of western Ohio, located some 200 miles to the east of IL, lived in fear for most of this two-year war and I can only imagine what the conditions would have been like in IL in the 1812 time frame. This is why most migration to IL would occur later, starting AFT 1820 with the heyday being in the 1830's and 1840's. John R.
