Anne, It does not give a date for these claims. Do you have a date for this Southern Claims Commission? As for the name, Matthew, we know that Matthew is a big name around some of this DANIEL bunch, don't we? One of the names that really did interest me were the McCOYS because the McCOYS were one of the original settlers of Brownwood Community, Morgan County, GA, which is located right next to Durdin's District, Morgan County, GA where my grandparents had a farm in the 1880-1920 time frame. I also know that a McCOY married one of my key DANIEL collaterals. I also know that two McCANS were located right next to the person I think was my grandmother's grandfather (Robert C. DANIEL) in 1820 in Burke County, GA. Were these McCANS really McCOYS? That, I do not know. In fact, this district in Morgan County, GA was named for a John DURDIN and a John DURDIN, probably his son, lived right across from my grandparents in 1900. A DURDIN family still lives in that area. FYI, John DURDIN was a State Representative in the 1850 time frame, representing Morgan County, GA in the GA legislature. I also know my grandmother, Alice E. DANIEL, did not buy the land she and her husband lived on (LD 19, LL 74 in Morgan County, GA, originally part of Baldwin County, GA) which meant she inherited it from someone else. I also know she did not inherit it from her father, Robert W. DANIEL of Jefferson County, GA, that I can tell. I also know this John DURDIN (the senior) went bankrupt in 1873 and his land was sold at auction in Morgan County, GA but he "miraculously" was able to buy it back from the creditors for $700 at this courthouse auction, arranged by one of the FOSTER boys. This $700 was also the exact same amount that Alice inherited from her father's estate in 1867. Was this money DURDINS or hers, that, I do not know. However, what I do know is that by 1895 she owned this land in "fee simple" because she deeded part of it for a church which she built and named this new church, Milton Chapel, in honor of one of her infant sons who had died in 1891. However, there is no grantee, grantor entry for this land, so how did she get it. This new church, Milton Chapel (1895-ABT 1940), was chartered as a non-denominational Protestant Church but Alice and her husband, John RICHTER, Sr., were members of the Presbyterian Church in Madison and were not even members of this new church. I am afraid this may remain a mystery but maybe Marshall WILLIAMS, archivist of Morgan County, GA, will find some tid-bit that will help to solve how Alice got this land. FYI, Milton Abbott RICHTER, was my father's older brother and he died at the age of three in 1891 and she built this church in his memory. I wish I had the foresight to sit down with my father and discuss genealogy with him when I was a boy but 30 years after his death is a little late. I do remember a few things here and there but not enough for me to make any sense of it all. However, I do know the ANDREWS family of Morgan County, GA were related to my DANIEL bunch. That is from one of my cousins which is one of the reasons I look very closely at the RLD family. John R.
