I came across a listing of a William Daniel, Quaker, who joined the Quaker group at Wrightsboro, St. Paul's Parish, GA, receiving a land grant there in 1775. I remember some mention of the early Quakers in GA and thought it might be of interest to someone. Below is part of the info that went with the list of Quaker settlers. "THEY WERE HERE", June 1965, Published Quarterly Frances Wynd, Editor, Albany, Ga. 31705 , Page 2 QUAKER SETTLEMENT IN GEORGIA After Edmund Grey's abortive attempt to settle Quakers from Virginia in Georgia, nothing further was done until September 1767 when Joseph Stubbs presented a petition stating that "sundry families, at present residents of Orange County in the Province of North Carolina but lately from Pennsylvania, setting forth that they were desirous to remove into and become settlers in this Province and praying that a reserve of land for that purpose might be made for a certain time". This petition and later ones were granted. All of these petitions may be found in the various volumes of The Colonial Records of Georgia. Quakers from other sections joined the above and below is a listing of grants made to them in the Town and Township of Wrightsborough. The land lay originally in Old St. Paul Parish which became Richmond County. When Columbia County was out off from Richmond Co. Dec. 10, 1790, Wrightsborough fell into the new County. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lucy Gray" <lucygray1@cox.net> To: <DANIEL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, December 07, 2003 3:47 PM Subject: [DANIEL-L] Washington CO, GA Daniels > I was sent the following information by Connie Anderson of Colorado Springs, CO in 1981. Jack, I believe Wrightsborough is in current McDuffie County, GA, as I remember. There was another settlement, I believe it was Queensboro in Burke and some of the folks I look at had ties to that area. As for the Quakers, they bailed out of GA shortly after 1800 because of the slavery question and moved to slave free areas of the OH Territory, as I remember. However, the ones that stayed in GA were gradually assimilated into primarily the Methodist religion, then in its ascendancy due to the efforts of Francis ASBURY and the many new preachers he ordained into the folds of ME Church.
