Ruth: Re: Charles David Daniel - we may be on to something here. Mother always knew that at least two or three of 1786 Thomas' other grandsons (sons of Seaborn John Daniel, fourth and last of old Thomas' children) came to TX at or about the time that George Mayfield did, ca. 1868, because of a letter written by Seaborn John to his youngest daughter, Nissia "Nancy" Daniel Harwell in Columbus,GA, shortly before his death in 1890 in AL, asking if she had heard from "the boys in Texas". She never located them, but about a year ago, I heard from a newly found step-cousin in Austin, at the Capitol, a direct descendant of the step-daughter of George Mayfield's older sister, Martha Louise, who married a widower (James Matheson, b. Scotland, CSA vet), and it seems George Mayfield was the minister who performed the wedding ceremony for the step-daughter's wedding here in TX, says he has the info on George's older brothers, John T (CSA), and Joseph who came to TX. I visited this Matheson's great grandson, also a James Matheson, retired Baptist minister and teacher, in Columbus, GA when I was in GA. in September researching. This Daniel line is big-time on Baptists ministers, elders, lay preachers and missionaries down to recent date, as far as I can discern. Since a number of George Mayfield Daniel's sons, and one daughter, graduated from Baylor (one of them also a Missionary who died in China), and grandsons Bill and Price, among others, looks like a two hour drive down to Waco to the Baylor Library to check out your Charles Davis is in order. I'll write you more directly. Anne
Hi Anne: I'd love to hear what you might be able to find at Baylor U - there should be quite alot on Charles Davis Daniel there, as that is where he graduated too. Talking about a missionary that was killed in China - Charles Davis Daniel's mother used the "Haseltine" name as her middle name - she was Mary Ann Haseltine Daniel - but, usually signed as Ann H. Daniel. I understand that the Haseltine's had been Baptist missonaries who had been killed or murdered in China. And, I've seen another Daniel woman who used Haseltine as her middle name, also. Regarding "Mayfield". What has recently peaked my interest is the name in connection with a couple of families that were collaterals of my Daniel family in Monroe Co., AL. My great+++ Aunt, Drucilla Daniel married Col. Asa Thompson Oliver in Brazil. I've recently been able to find out information about their son Asa T. Oliver, Jr., so I've been researching the Oliver line and the descendents of Rev. War Privateer Dioniysius Oliver who found Petersburg, Elbert Co., GA - which he named after his hometown of Petersburg, VA. And, in particular, the writing of Col. Edmund Sanders in his "Early Settlers of Alabama". Now, I know that not all in Col. Sanders works are accurate - but, I do give him credit for documenting a very interesting migration pattern, and a group of "hearding" families, of which the Olivers were one. There is only an occasional "Daniel" that marries into this group - but, there are a few of them. This is where the Hudson's connect, as part of this hearding family. The Mayfield's were also part of the heard. One - Martha Mayfield married Zimri Tate of Elbert Co. GA. There were also Maxwell's in this group, as were the Bibb's, Watkins, Winfrey, Williamson, Cobb, Banks, Webb, Cook, descendants of Christorpher Clark & Mildred Terrell, White's, McGeehee, Shelton, Shackelford, DeJarnette, Coleman, Colson/Coleson (just to name a few) - an interesting group of folks. And, most of them settled in Elbert Co for a while around 1800 or before, depending on the family.
