I checked the volumes cited by Kevin. While William Daniell's 1672 patent was based on a headright for the transport of 3 persons, including John Russell, that record, by itself, does not establish that William Daniell personally transported Russell. Headright patents can be the source of considerable misinterpretation. The person who actually transported a group of individuals could sell or trade the associated entitlement to acres to others to settle a debt or convert it to cash. The headrights served as a form of quasi-currency and could change hands multiple times over a period of years. Consider the fact that the Nugent Vol. II also contains a reference to a patent a few months after the one in 1672, which was to Mr. Tho. Hall and Jno. Pigg based on the transport of 77 persons including John Russell, William Daniell, and Mary Daniell [p. 143]. Then, three years later Lieut. Col. Cad. Jones & Mr. David Jones received a patent based on the transport of 282 persons, including John Russell and William Daniell, but not Mary Daniell [Nugent, p. 191]. There are an additional six patents based on the transport of an individual named John Russell prior to 1672 and another four after 1672 (one as late as 1694), none with William Daniell. In Cavaliers & Pioneers Vol. I, there are another five patents based on transport of an individual named John Russell. One of those was as early as 1635, and another, in 1653, which granted Col. William Clayborne acreage based on the the transport of 100 persons, including John Russell and Joane Younge (remember that was one of the two other names in the William Daniell patent of 1672). In this single volume there are no less than 13 patents issued over a 28 year period based on the transport of two or more individuals named John Russell (one was a Junior). It would take careful study and analysis of these references to begin to accurately sort out them out. To further complicate matters, in Adventurers of Purse & Person 1607-1624/5, by Virginia M. Meyer and John Frederick Dorman, p. 31, there is even reference to a John Russell in James City, VA on 24 January 1624. Ken, Swindling the government is nothing new, then or now. <grin> However, this John RUSSELL was supposedly a doctor and it would have been rather difficult to pass off a local man servant as a doctor in those times. Today, it might not be as difficult as it was them. <grin> What this John RUSSELL could have been was a son of one of these earlier John RUSSELLS who went back to England or Ireland for their education and Capt. Bill brought him and his new wife, if he had one, back to the colonies. I also tend to think, as I have said, previously, that Ireland is the place to look for this Middlesex DANIEL bunch if Luke BILLINGTON was Capt. Bill's grandfather. I would also beat that McCARTY family to death to see if Capt. Bill's wife was out of that bunch, too. As for a lot of the information one sees in some of these books, I think a serious researcher needs to go back and look at the original documents and not rely on this printed information. There are just too many errors in some of this stuff because many of the persons who write these sort of books have no idea, whatsoever, how these families are laid out and this causes all too many errors in spelling, names, locations, etc. Whatever their research would gain from their impartiality is lost because they do not have a general understanding of these families and w/o that a lot of very important information is lost. Then, we have the slanted research which references primary source information that either does not exist or one which is open to interpretation, as you referenced. This is why you have to go back to the originals and not rely upon what this or that person stated was the wording in a particular document. Yep, and I found a boy named John Russell on a list of persons arriving the James and the Revenge in 1632. This same boy appears on the list of "general accompts" as a kitchen servant "imloyed in the kitchen to beate the corne". And there was another John Russell listed as a passenger on the Africa in 1636. There were undoubtedly multiple John Russells, but as Ken pointed out, it was routine to find the same person listed on several different grants - sometimes the same list of people would appear on grants in different counties.
