John, As to your reference to William SWANNER please consider the following Tyrell Co. estate records: 391. SWANNER, Mathias Tobias 4 Jun 1746. Bond for Darby BRYAN to be guardian to Samuel SWANNER, orphan of the dec'd. Bondsmen: William (X) HASSELL, William KENNEDY. 14 Jun 1746. Bond for Robert DANIEL to be guardian to William SWANNER [later called William LINIEAR] orphan of the dec'd. Bondsmen: John HARDISON, William KENNEDY. 3 Sep 1746. Bond for William LANIER of Beaufort Co. to be guardian to George Mathias SWANNER, orphan of the dec'd. Bondsmen: John LANIER, Robert Lanier DANIEL (both of Tyrell Co.) This one puzzles me. Why would William SWANNER be later called William LINIEAR [LANIER?] if he were ward of Robert DANIEL? Is Robert DANIEL, guardian of William SWANNER, and Robert Lanier DANIEL, bondsman for William Lanier's guardianship of George Matthias SWANNER one in the same? At any rate the SWANNERS obviously had some ties to the DANIEL/LANIERS. Mike Daniel

    3. Mike, It is William Lanier SWANNER b. ABT 1725, son of Matthias Tobias SWANNER (1692-1743) and Jean LANIER (ABT 1696-1743). Jean was Elizabeth Lanier DANIEL's sister and this SWANNER boy was Thomas's nephew and RLD's first cousin. Now, do you understand the relationship? They also seem to have just listed his first two names, William Lanier, in these guardianship papers and not his last name, but it is same fellow. Matt and Jean also had a son, John Lanier SWANNER born ABT the same time as William, who married an UNK and they had a son, Jesse SWANNER, who had a son, James SWANNER (1790-1842) who married Anna CHERRY, d/o John of Beaufort County, NC. So, the CHERRYS were close to this overall bunch. The connection to BRYAN/BRYANT was that Matt and Jean's daughter, Sarah SWANNER born ABT 1723 married Darby BRYANT. I do not know anything about him...... However, this all begs the question, was this Robert DANIEL of Martin or Robert Lanier DANIEL of Pitt? It could be either, or even a 3rd Robert DANIEL we do not know, which is the problem. I based by assumption in this that it was RLD of Pitt but that does not mean it was. . John R.
