John, This Philip RAIFORD, the third, appears to be the Philip who married Martha WESTON. He was born Abt 1689 in Isle of Wight, VA and died Abt 1747 in what is now Richland Co., SC. Raiford researchers track the this line back to Philip WRAYFORD, b. 1623, Crediton, Devonshire, England (Philip WRAYFORD, the first). From the notes of Raiford researchers: Philip and his wife Martha migrated to the fork of Congaree and Wateree Rivers and settled on the creek named for them, "Raiford Creek", now Mill Creek. They were among the very first settlers in Richland County. Philip III came soon after his father's death in North Carolina and on January 6,1740 Certified 450 acres on Mill Creek below Bluff Road. Three days later, he obtained 300 acres more. (History of Richland County, p. 27}. He and Martha appear as married in a 1724 Bertie Co. N.C. deed in 1720 (p108). His will was probated 25 Feb 1747 in Charleston, South Carolina, Will Book 1747 1752, page 61-63. Wit.: Thomas Hodge, James Henderson, John Handyside. Ex.: Wife & son Philip. Son-in-law: John Pearson (m. Mary Raiford). Wife: Martha. sons: Philip, Isaac,. Daughters: Ann, Grace, Patience, Christian. This is written about Philip's nephew William RAIFORD, Jr.: "The descendants of William, Jr. are legion, and for the majority of them in the succeeding three or four generations, their residences remained in either Isle or Wight or Southampton County throughout their lives. For this chief reason, the descendants of William, Jr. have always been referred to as the "Virginia Raifords;" whereas the descendants of William, Sr.'s brother, Matthew have become known as the "North Carolina Raifords," and the descendants of brother Philip, the "South Carolina Raifords."
