Jack, I have MAYOS tied to my maternal THIGPEN line out of Edgecombe. Lydia MAYO married James THIGPEN V, son of James IV and Mary Penelope HILL. I descend from James's brother, the Hon. Travis Hill THIGPEN (1747-1849) who married Hannah Hall HARDY of Pitt County, NC, who moved later to Emanuel County, GA and they are my 4th GGP. Speaking of a Sam MAYO, I knew a Rev. Sam MAYO of the South Georgia Conference for many years. Brother Sam died about 10 years ago in Fitzgerald, Ben Hill County, GA. He was a very close family friend. "Brother Sam" married, as his second wife, one of my mother's best friends, Verlin PATTEN and the PATTENS lived out near Rochelle. Brother Sam was the Associate Minister at Central UMC in Fitzgerald in his later years after spending about 40 years at various churches in the South Georgia Conference. Brother Sam was a very nice man and a credit to his profession. Knowing Sam as well as the MAY family attached to some of my paternal bunch, I have often wondered if some of these MAYS were not MAYO. My cousin, Joe MAY of Thomasville is of about the same statue as Brother Sam - short, stocky and Methodist.. The GRAY family I am looking at is John GRAY of Scotland ( 1690-1756) who married Ann BRYAN, d/o Col. Lewis BRYAN and Elizabeth HUNTER of Edenton, Chowan County, NC. Their children are listed, below. I also think the MAY and MAYO and probably the MOYE family gets commingled in the Pitt County, NC area and I am not sure which is which. If the MAYOS went to Beaufort County, SC, so did the MAYS. Are any of the MAYO bunch tied to the STAFFORDS. If so, we may be looking at the same family. Also the story of John MAY is that he came through Charleston and anyone who was from Barbados came through Charleston on the way to NC...... <<< Children i.
