    3. Martha, If they went on the Trail of Tears, they were probably North GA families maybe including some from south central TN and western NC. Many of the Cherokees fled into the ancestral tribal areas in the mountains of western NC and escaped being relocated. ROSS and McINTOSH are two big names in the bunch that were relocated out west, still are...... What Andy Jackson and others wanted was their land, especially after gold was found in Dahlonega, GA area in the late 1820's. I guess Old Andy thought there was a lot of gold in "them thar hills, " something they later found not to be the case. The only gold in "them thar hills," today, is the hills, themselves. The last I heard land in the Dahlonega area was going for $40,000 an acre in two acre tracks and that was close to 10 years ago. Just goes to show what a bunch of rich Yankees and GA-400 will do for an area. <grin> John R.
