Hello all - My 3G grandparents were Isham John DANIEL and Mary Ann RAINEY. They were married 30 Mar 1848 in Sumter Co., AL. According to the Presbyterian (PCA)Historical Center in St. Louis, MO, Isham John DANIEL was a Presbyterian minister. I have found them in the 1870 and 1880 census records for Edwards, Hinds Co., MS. These records all indicate that Isham was born in Alabama around 1829 and his wife in Georgia around 1830. I am trying to look at collaterals in and around this family, so I have checked out the RAINEY/RANEY surname in Georgia from around 1800 to about 1850. While researching I found an interesting marriage record from Pike County, GA in 1842, for a Chesley P. RAINEY to Amanda LYNCH. I know from reading this DANIEL list that the name Chesley shows up among the DANIEL/WOODSON family. Does anyone have any other DANIEL/RAINEY connections? Other collateral surnames in my files on this family include DODGE, GIRARDEAU, MCDOWALL, MCEWEN, MORTON, REINHARDT, SHIELDS, THOMAS, and WITHERSPOON. I know that most of these were Scots-Irish Presbyterians that settled in the Carolinas. Is anyone researching any of these collaterals? Could there be a connection to the Cub Creek Presbyterians? Regards, Linda Scott
Linda, I am sure you know, ministers of the gospel of any religion generally moved all over the place, so it is usually hard to track them, as we can sometimes do family migrations. However, most early Presbyterian ministers were trained at the Presbyterian seminary at Princeton University in New Jersey, so you may find some information, there. Presbyterian ministers were not just ordained folks, as often happened in other religions. They were actually college graduate and :educated gentlemen, always. One college the Presbyterians opened in the South to train their ministers was Oglethorpe University, located in Milledgeville, Baldwin County, GA. I do not know where your Isham John DANIEL went to seminary but I am sure he went to one of these two locations, from what I understand about the Presbyterians. One difference I noted between the Presbyterians and my Methodists is -- ten of more years ago I contacted the Methodist Archives in VA, GA and AR about my 2nd GGF, a PE in the Methodist Church, they gave me all of his assignments and everything else they had on him without charge, even though I did have to contact three different archives. From all of this and what I already had on him from family sources, I wrote a short biography of him, which is now in the Archives of the Methodist Church. When I contacted the Presbyterians a few months ago to see what they knew about the minister, then President of Oglethorpe University, who married my grandparents in 1872, they offered to research this person for me for $15 an hour. A little difference there. Maybe even the Methodists now charge for this service, having learned "there is some gold to be found in them thar Methodist minister ancestors." <grin> I also contacted the archivist (twice) at Oglethorpe University, now in Atlanta, about Dr. David WILLS, and they did not even give me the courtesy of a reply. One would think they would have a short biography already prepared about their former President, who they actually list by name on their website. <sigh> John R.
