Payne, Cherokee -- could be. There were some still left around in the mountains of north GA after the Trail of Tears. Half means his mother was full blooded, his daddy was full blooded or his daddy was half and his mother was half, all of which are real possibilities. I remember reading a story about a DANIEL family in the north GA area that had a son whose eye was knocked out by a horse. Have you heard that story? I do not remember where I read it -- it was years ago. Seems like there was a James DANIEL involved in the story and they were part Indian, as the story went. As I remember from the Hicky book on Morgan County, GA, the Cherokees from that area and the early locals got along pretty good, early. However, there were exceptions and there were some conflicts. By the 1820's the local militias had started to push these Cherokees out of the area and this would accelerate by the 30's when Andy Jackson moved them all out west. I know revisionists want to kick these early settlers for their treatment of the Indians but many of them treated their fellow man in exactly the same way. If they got in their way, look out for the steam roller, because if someone had something they wanted, they would get it, one way or another. Since many of these early Georgia settlers came from families of immense wealth and power in NC, SC and VA, the plight of the little man and Indian were further from their worries. It is no different, today, is it? Some things change and some things don't, do they? It has always been a conflict between the "haves and the have nots." In this case the Indians, they "had" but not for long. The same was the case for many "po folks," they "had" the land they had gotten from their RS war land grants, but not for long. There will always be the "screw-ee" and the "screw-or" and never the two shall meet, after the deeds are executed, because they live in totally different worlds. As Lincoln was supposedly once asked to provide a saying that would be true in all times, he responded, "and this, too, shall pass." And, it has passed and we live in an era where historians second guess these folks, based on ethical and moral standards of a completely different time. I guess it is all based on, which side of the fence you are on. If you are "po" and uneducated, then you want what you think your family was cheated out of. In other words, something for nothing. If you are rich and well educated, then you want to protect what you already have from these folks. So, this age old class conflict continues. The world is still anyone's apple and all they have to do is reach out, grab it and eat it. However, some of these folks want me to grow it, harvest it, hand it over to them and help them eat it. I am sorry, but that's just a little too much for my plebian genes to stomach...... John R.
