    1. Bertie County, NC Families

    3. Good Morning. One comment on a previous post to the DANIEL List. I did some double checking and there were PEEKE and PEEK families around some of this bunch in the Bertie-Edgecombe area. I do not know whether the PEELE we see is the same IOW family we see tied to William DANIEL of IOW/Bertie County or not, or whether transcribers have commingled the two families. On another subject. We have known for a long time about the Frederick O'DANIEL (1731-BEF 1773) and Charity WHITFIELD family of the Bertie, Edgecombe and Duplin areas of NC. However, that family is expanding to include many of the families that are known to be around some of the DANIEL family of that same area. We now know that Frederick was the son of Owen O'DANIEL who is found in the Cassia Swamp area of Bertie County, NC as early as 1724. He seems to have been a land surveyor of sorts but he also owned lots of land in that area. . I already have deeds which seem to imply his family may have been connected in some way to the KING, WYNN, DAWSON, SESSION, RAWLS, TARVER, STEVENS, GOFF, HURST, WILLS, LEE, MOORE, WILLIAMS and WILLSON families. We already know that two of Frederick O'DANIEL's children married into the HERRING and GRADY families of that same area and there is some indication they may even be tied to the RICKS family of that area. There are also deeds in which Owen O'DANIEL and William DANIEL of Bertie County, NC are on the same deeds and I do not know if they were out of the same family or not. We know one of the primary locations which fed this area was Accomack County, VA and we also know the O'DANIEL Family of Fairfax County, VA lived at one time in Accomack County, VA before migrating to Fairfax County, VA . However, we do not know if the family of Owen O'DANIEL of Bertie and the O'DANIELS of Fairfax County, VA are one in the same family or not. However, there are deeds in Bertie that seem to indicate,at least two of the families we see tied to the O'DANIEL family of Edgefield County, SC (the WATSONS and EDWARDS families) are involved in deeds and court orders with this O'DANIEL bunch in eastern North Carolina in an earlier time frame. This is especially important since the ancestor of both Thomas DANIEL (1686-1749) who married Elizabeth LANIER and Simon DANIEL (1678-1763) who married Elizabeth ROGERS, was supposedly an Owen DANIEL and this Owen O'DANIEL would have been born in the right time to have been either this Owen or his father. The POLLOCKS are also all in this mess, especially through the WESTS, and we know that Gov. Thomas POLLOCK (1656-1722) was appointed the guardian of same, Thomas DANIEL, after the death of his father, Owen DANIEL, in 1700. I do think the WILLIAMS family of IOW County, VA may well be a key family link, since they seem to be around the DANIEL family, there, and this O'DANIEL family of Bertie and I assume, Edgecombe and Duplin, later. The DAWSONS may also play a part in this family because they are tied to many of the same families, including the McKINNIES, KINCHENS and ALSTONS we see tied to some of these other close DANIEL families, especially Col John DAWSON (ABT 1680- ABT 1750) who married both a Charity ALSTON (d/o John and Mary CLARK) and Elizabeth THOMAS. Charity also married a Richard HILLIARD. Another key family may be the HURSTS. The HURST family is tied to the GUNNELLS and SUMMERS families and in turn, the O'DANIEL, family of Fairfax County, VA. In NC they are tied to the McKINNIES and SUMNER family of that area and I think they moved to Emanuel County, GA were we also find the MOXLEY family, another name tied to the Fairfax County, VA O'DANIEL family. If I were to guess, I would say there is probably a pretty good chance they are out of the same overall O'DANIEL family but I have nothing to prove that relationship at this point. Some of these deeds are listed below. I also do not know if the O'DANIEL name was a result of clerks transcribing their name, incorrectly, or whether their actual name was actually O'DANIEL. However, since some of these records involve surveys and patents, I tend to think the latter. If you have other deeds which include any of these families, I think we need to look at them based on this new information. What may be the indications are -- these O'DANIELS migrated from England via Ireland to the seashore areas of NJ or MD, where some parts of this family stayed in that area and some migrated to the Accomack County, VA area. Later, this VA family split up with some parts of the family moving west into Fairfax County, VA and others moving with the great influx of other families that migrated to eastern NC. However, as usual, they carried along certain families with them, so they have common families in both locations and they later combined, once again, later in both GA and SC. <<< John Edwards & Wife To Peter Stancell Know all men by these presents that I John Edwards & Elizabeth my wife do firmly by these presents Constitute Authorize and ordain in my Names & Head my trusty and well beloved friend Peter Stancell, Our true & lawfull Attorney to Acknowledge a certain Tract of land in Bertie Prect.
