    3. This is a post I sent to another and I think it is self-explanatory. Yes, the family GEDCOMS at Ancestry and World Connect are free, but it is also free to "look in store windows," "kick the tires on new cars" and even "browse through houses listed by real estate agents." These free databases at both Ancestry and World Connect are nothing more than "teasers" to get your genealogical information (for free) and to get you and others to subscribe to their services at Ancestry.... This is all a financial gamble on their part but after all they are in the gambling business, too, since they are also the biggest owners of gambling enterprises on the strip in Las Vegas. Bet you did not know that, did you? <<< As you know Ancestry, really the LDS Church, owns both Ancestry, Rootsweb and FHC and they commingle Rootsweb's World Connect databases in their databases at Ancestry. Ancestry is just a money making endeavor for them and they use Rootsweb as a "loss-leader" for their profit making Ancestry.com. However, we have also seen the recent commercialization of Rootsweb in the years since they bought it out, through pop-up adds and other items which make this resource much slower than it use to be. I guess you could say, they will soon combine these two genealogical resources and Rootsweb will then loose its distinct identity and will become just another function of Ancestry. I think you are already seeing some of this and I think within two years, this merging will be complete, as they will even start to include country and state archives, as well as country files, into their databases at Ancestry. That would justify charging more for their product at Ancestry, a product which will then include what many persons have worked very hard to build "for free" over the years -- the country and state archives managed through the auspices of the US GENWEB Project.. >>> John R. 3. John, I confess that I have never understood your animosity toward folks who sell convenience for a profit. A good part of American business does that in one form or another. Why are these folks evil for doing likewise - I don't get it and never have. And based on many of your posts, I suspect that you have been looking in their store windows and kicking their tires quite a lot over the years.
