    3. Vickie, That is one of the names I watch like a hawk - Etheldred. Others in this little group of non-standard given names are Noah and Frederick. They seem to roll, to some degree, in a select group of families, all of which are probably related in some way or another. This Etheldred "or "Dred" as they are sometimes called, is a quite early name, too, long before TN was even a gleam in its father's eye. <grin> Etheldred is a definite given name in the LANE, SMITH, TARVER families of eastern NC and probably others of which I am not aware. This is the first time I have seen it associated with a DANIEL family, albeit a later time frame. This name seems to be located in Bertie, Edgecombe and Northampton County, NC. Other NC families in which this name is found in the 1730-1770 time frame are: BOYETT, BUNN, BOZEMAN, ELLIS, EXUM, FUTRELL, HARRIS, JONES, MARTIN, MAYO, NEWSOM, OWENS, PRICE, RUFFIN, THIGPEN, THOMAS, THWEATT and WEBB. As most know, these folks are located around many of the DANIEL families we see in this area. There are no instances of the name, Etheldred, in the 1680-1720 time frame in NC but there are incidences of its use in VA, primarily IOW County, VA and other areas of Southside. There, it is found in the EXUM, JONES, PHILLIPS, RUFFIN and TAYLOR families. We also know these families are generally found around many of the DANIEL family of that area and later in NC, as before. The earliest instance of the name, Etheldred I have been able to find is in the HOWELL family (1635) of Jamestown, which ties into the BOYETT family. It also seems to be "centered up" pretty much in VA around Jamestown and spreads out from there. It is also an English given name because there are lots of instances of its use in England in an earlier time frame, as a name for both boys and girls. This given name, Etheldred, is not found in SC or MD in the 1680-1720 time frame, at least that I can find, which seems to tell me it is pretty much a Southside VA given name, which seems to roll out of families of the original Jamestown area.
