Those in red are descendants of Thomas Daniel ca 1750 VA - ca 1825 IL. A couple of the James Daniels who used the St. Stephens land office are probably also descendants. John R. Happy New Year, Kevin brought up a good topic. All Rootsweb messages are sent to all mailing lists as 7 bit ASCII text, which means no fonts, colors (other than B&W) or formatting other than that provided by the standard 7 bit ASCII character set. The reason their messages are encoded as 7 bit ASCII is to stop the possibility of viruses being included in messages to any mailing list. To do this, they have converters which strip the 8th bit from all messages which removes all fonts, colors, formatting, etc. from the message. Rootsweb also does not pass on attachments to any mailing list for the same reason, so there is no use in attaching attachments to messages to Rootsweb mail handlers because they will strip them from the message before it goes out to the list. For this reason, you should always send messages to Rootsweb mailing lists as "Plain Text," a option in either MS Outlook or Outlook Express. In Outlook or OE, click on "Format" and choose "Plain Text" as the source of your message. I am sure you have all seen all of that gobbledygook at the beginning of some messages sent to various lists by the Rootsweb mail handlers. This gobbledygook is because the sender did not encode the message as "Plain Text" and, instead, sent it out as some type of HTML formatted message. Then, the 8 bit to 7 bit message converter at Rootsweb did not know how to encode this message to 7 bit and just converted the message's HTML code as best it could, which left a lot of un-needed stuff at the beginning of the message. This "un-needed" junk camouflages the contents of the sender's message and many subscribers just delete the message without bothering to scroll down a half-page to see what the sender really said in the message. You can also go into your Address Book (if you are running Windows) and put a check in the check box telling Outlook of Outlook Express to send all messages to those addresses as "Plain Text." I suggest that you do this for each mailing list you are subscribed to and then you will not have to remember to encode those as plain text before you send them. One other topic -- fonts, colors, etc. used on genealogical websites. I am forever amazed at the creativity of some genealogical website developers. The problem is - no one over the age of 10 can read those fancy fonts, weird color combinations. I know that black on white is not as fancy as some "Lord of the Rings" color combinations but they are a lot easier on one's eyes. I am also sure that standard Courier, Times Roman or Bookman fonts are also not as fancy as a "snow drift" or script font but they are also a whole lot easier to read. I ask these people to remember what they really want to get out of their genealogical websites when they design the themes used on them. If they want others to be able to read and benefit from their research, then make things easy to read which means use one of the standard easily read fonts and contrasting color combinations for their websites. Also, the background must always be very dark and the text very light, which is why "black on white" or "yellow on dark blue" are always the best choices. "Black on green" or "red on purple" just does not hack it, no matter what some interior designer told your spouse. John R. Clarke Thomasville, GA ----- Original Message -----
