    1. RE: [DANIEL-L] Edgefield, SC List Posting- Raiford Connections
    2. Diane Carrington Bradford
    3. John, You may remember that I have a 3rd gr grandfather named George MASON (c 1760-1843) who married a Sarah LNU before 1796. George MASON first appeared in the Washington County, Georgia land records in 1797 when he purchased 180 acres of land, which was partly in Washington County and partly in Montgomery County. George MASON and Sarah had six known children, 4 boys and 2 girls: 1. James MASON (c 1796-1829) m Nancy Jane HICKS bef 1820 2. **Raiford** MASON (c 1798-?) never married 3. Henry MASON (c 1801-1867) m Elizabeth CULPEPPER Jan 14, 1828 4. Mary "Polly" MASON (c 1807-?) m Daniel RICKS Apr 24, 1828 5. Elizabeth "Betsy" MASON (1810-?) m Judge Jethro ARLINE Jul 26, 1827 6. John F, MASON (1811-1848) m Nancy Ann DANIEL Jan 3, 1842 [d/o Joseph DANIEL and Temperance Ann LEE, d/o of Sampson LEE] So, John, Robert, anyone on the list-----my question is..... Does anyone show a RAIFORD connection to a MASON line in VA, NC, SC, anywhere? Could Sarah LNU have been a Sarah RAIFORD, hence giving their 2nd son Sarah's maiden name or perhaps her father's full name but extant records only show the RAIFORD part????? (If they followed the standard naming patterns of their day, then George MASON's father would have been a James MASON, and the second son would have been named for Sarah's father---a RAIFORD perhaps???) Another possibility, of course, is that George and Sarah MASON named him Raiford in honor of someone, perhaps Lt. John RAIFORD? Was he a Rev War hero whom people in that era would honor by naming their sons for him? Thoughts, please? 3. Diane, Yes and Yes -- Revolutionary War hero(s) Both John RAIFORD and his wife, Lucy SPELL, were both RW heroes. So, what you surmise may be true. There is an awful lot going on in Burke, Jefferson and Washington County, GA that I do not have a good handle on, primarily because there are few if any civil records existing from these three counties before the end of the CW. So, what we have is a lot of convolution and commingling of various families that would not be the case if we had those records. However, we do not and we have to work with the little tid bits we get here and there. However, these tid bits are sometimes confusing and makes what we do know about these makes -- make little if any sense. It is almost like trying to put together a puzzle that has lots of missing pieces. Sure, we can look at the remaining holes on the board and try to figure out "what will go into where" but I am afraid the smart play is to find the missing pieces, sooner. However, in doing so, we will be up against the research of those persons who have been beating square pegs in round holes for the past 25 years and their puzzle board is nothing but a bunch of broken, bent and misshaped pieces and the picture on the board looks like the face of the monster in the Frankenstein movies. We are getting there and this is why I keep repeating, over and over again, the answers we are seeking are probably not in what we already know about various branches of the DANIEL family but what we do not know about the other families around them. The reason this is doubly important is -- researchers have created genealogy for their own lines, as in the puzzle example mentioned, previously, but they have a hard time sustaining that genealogy across several different families. Also, by knowing these families, you will gain a better understanding of your own family. My general thoughts about these families is -- any family migrating into GA first passed through Richmond County, GA and then spread out into Burke, later Washington and Jefferson County. Also, you can go down through the early censuses for these counties and you see one big trend -- they came, originally, from NC of SC and not, VA. The VA folks settled a little further north than Burke, Jefferson and Washington County, Ga. The VA folks settled primarily in Wilkes, Oglethorpe, Greene and Hancock Counties. Counties located between these two areas, like Baldwin, Jasper and Putnam kind of are a mixture of both geographical sets. Early GA families (before the RW) were located primarily along the Savannah River basin, from Savannah to Augusta. One of the hotspots, early, for VA families was Columbia County, GA and anytime you see that county mentioned then you can rest assured they probably had later links to one of the other VA counties. Effingham County, GA, another early county, was a NC driven county. However, by 1850 these different geographical sets are merging together and you do not see the stark contrast in where they came from that you saw, earlier. Also remember, that folks moved, generally west, and if they started out in Burke, they probably headed west into the counties north of Macon in the coming years. If they started out in Hancock, they generally headed west towards the Columbus, GA area and then on into AL. Look at the O'DANIELS of Hancock County, GA -- they headed to Russell County, AL, which is just across the Chattahoochee River from Columbus. Also, VA folks from Wilkes, Oglethorpe and Greene Counties who later moved west, generally moved into such counties as Pike, Heard, Troup, etc. in later years. Families that were in some of the southern most counties, like Emanuel or Bulloch County, GA, generally headed south into the south GA or crossed over into FL, like Lucy Gray's DANIEL bunch. Sure, I am playing the odds but when I do not have the facts, I play the best match that I can that seems to match the facts that I do have. This is also not to say that some families bounced all over the place, they did. John R.
