P, Beverley Anthony ALLEN (1757-1857) was born, probably in New Kent County, VA the son of Benjamin ALLEN and Elizabeth, later of Henrico County, VA. He married Anna SINGLETARY in 1786 in Edisto, Berkley County, SC. Afterwards, his conduct went south not only in his relationship with the Methodist church and ASBURY but also with the law. He died in Logan County, KY in Jan 1857, age almost 100. According to other information I have seen on Beverly, he was a model citizen in KY after his problems in GA. He had been defrocked by Bishop ASBURY in 1791, as I remember, but as you will note from ASBURY's Journal -- ASBURY had already lost his faith in ALLEN much earlier. After being broken out of the jail in Elbert County, GA where he had been incarcerated after bribing his way out of the jail in Augusta, GA, Beverly ALLEN fled to KY, then a US territory. According to what I read, a mob of local citizens broke him out of the jail in Elberton. There was never a reason known why he killed Marshall FORSYTH, who had only gone to his room to serve a civil process on him -- nothing criminal. I think the story was -- he shot him through the door. Beverley was the gs of Robert ALLEN, Sr. (ABt 1680-1756) and Elizabeth WALKER of New Kent County, VA. Robert ALLEN III, gs of Robert and Elizabeth, migrated to Augusta, Richmond County, GA. This was also the location where Beverly killed US Marshall FORSYTH, I think it was John but it may have been Robert. One of the two and the other, his son, was later Governor of GA and still good friends with the DANIELS of Madison County, GA. My information says that Mary ALLEN, the wife of Capt. Allen DANIEL, was a child of Joseph ALLEN and Sarah HUNT of New Kent County, VA, later Charlotte County, VA. Joseph was an older brother of Benjamin ALLEN, Beverley's father, so Beverley would have been Mary's first cousin..... My guess has always been that Capt. Allen DANIEL (1738-1814) of Madison County, GA was more than likely from the Williams DANIEL and Elizabeth WATKINS family of Cumberland County, VA or a DANIEL line very close to this DANIEL line, which has the same overall connections to this same ALLEN family. . William DANIEL, son of Williams DANIEL and Elizabeth WATKINS of Cumberland, born 1739 married Martha Patty Field ALLEN, daughter of Samuel ALLEN and gd of William ALLEN, whose older brother was Robert ALLEN, Sr. -- Beverly's grandfather. That's my two bits on this bunch based upon what I see in these collaterals and their inter-relationships. . John R. Hi John and All: Just an interesting note - it appears that Bishop Asbury was well traveled. It's Martin Key's daughter Elizabeth Key that married Josiah Daniel. Taken from "The National Cyclopedia of American Biography, Vol 9" page 537. Joseph Staunton Key, Methodist Episcopal bishop, was born at La Grange, Troup Co., GA, July 18, 1829, son of Caleb W. Key. According to history, a certain Sir Martin Key, chief of the grooms of Edward VI, was married to Catherine, sister of the ill fated Lady Jane Grey, and from them, it is believed, that the American Keys are descended. A Martin Key appeared in Virginia beofre 1645, and obtained grants of land in the eastern part of the colony. A hundred years later, a third Martin Key, a tabacco planter was living in Albemarle Co., and still later entertained Bishop Asbury as a guest.." - Ruth in Portland, OR ----- Original Message ----- From: "John R.
