    1. Re: [DANIEL-L] Cavaliers & Pioneers ~ DANIEL
    2. John R. Clarke
    3. This is very good information. However, what one must remember, about Accomack and probably even Northampton is they were eastern shore counties, not connected to VA, proper, but separated from mainland VA by Chesapeake Bay.. I know for a fact that Accomack families are very heavily engaged with family of Fairfax and Prince William County, VA and I assume there would be some connection in these families to Northampton. I would also look for lots of connections in these two counties to DE, MD and that area since they are actually attached to these areas, as opposed to being directly attached to VA. . I would also assume there would be a reasonable number of connections to counties like Essex, Caroline and those areas of VA, since they were located directly across Chesapeake Bay from both counties. However, I would still tend to think they probably had more connections to DE and MD since they were located on the same peninsula as both of these two states because traversing the Chesapeake Bay was not an easy chore for most families and any migration, inland would be occurred along the shorelines of this bay. Hence the reason there are so many connections between the families of Accomack and Fairfax County, VA -- the folks followed the shoreline to the vicinity of Washington and crossed the sound into, VA, proper. The same connections can be said for Prince William County, VA since it is located adjacent to Fairfax. . None of these northern VA counties are probably tied to Southside families of York, Henrico, James City, Charles City, IOW, Surry, etc., loosely or otherwise. These folks are located way down the state, south and east of Richmond -- pretty near the NC line. That's a long ways from the other locations since Washington is about 100 miles from Richmond and these counties, south and east of Richmond. I am sure there was probably some ties between the outer island counties, like Accomack and Northampton and the mainland, that Chesapeake Bay was not a easy body of water to traverse in those days and most links would probably have occurred with families located to their north in DE and MD, as well as across the sound at one of its narrower points located to the north. It must be remembered, the land body composing most of current Accomack and Northampton are at the end of the Delaware and Maryland peninsula and not on the land mass of VA, proper. In 1634, Accomack County, VA composed most of this whole peninsula and Northampton was not split off until 1643. At the same time (1743) Charles River parish was renamed, York, so York was not one of the original eight VA parishes or counties. The original eight counties of VA in 1634 (also called shires or parishes) were Charles City, Elizabeth City, Henrico, James City, Accomack, Charles River, Warrosquyoake, and Warwick River. Also, remember the name of Accomack county was later changed to Northampton and then later Northampton was split up into Northampton and Accomack counties. John R.
