    3. P, Most families always followed the setting sun and moved, west, as you well know. Any family in Goochland was probably an earlier family of Henrico and before that Charles City or that area. Almost all of these VA folks did just that, with one exception - the IOW and Surry folks. IOW families tended to always move south. One of their hot spots was the Chowan area of NC, and it was several generations and a war or two later before they started to turn west into AL, MS and TX. Goochland families generally spread northwest into Fluvanna, Frederick Albemarle, etc areas of VA but they also tended to move southwest after the RW right through NC into GA and then after 1800 some of them started to moved west into AL, MS and TX. Another migration path was south down the National Highway through Augusta County, VA, the Charlotte area of NC down to York County, SC and then west or southwest into GA. This was the path a lot of PA, MD, NJ (Atlantic seaboard families) took. However, some of these families split up along the way and some of these National Highway folks moved west into TN, along with a bunch of Upper Neck families and others from northwestern VA. I tend to view it like -- early coastal VA families began a gradual movement to the north and west probably seeking land in the areas north and west of present day, Richmond. Around 1700 some of the IOW, Surry and Sussex area folks started to move into the Chowan areas of NC, since it was then considered to be part of VA, but after it became part of NC, they stayed, especially after the Indian problem was alleviated in the early 1700's. We also know the Middlesex bunch grabbed a bunch of KY land when it became available, after Richard HENDERSON, Daniel BOONE and others tried to grab it all for a song. <grin> Contrary to what some may think, I think a lot of these folks thought like the "snow birds" of today -- they liked the warmer climes located to the south, so they headed south. However, warmer climes, as they would soon find out, have their own problems -- malaria, yellow fever, etc., as they soon found out. You also had the "grass is always greener across the fence" philosophy which determined a lot of where they went and how long they stayed in a certain place. I have always felt that a family that hit a certain place with money and bought good land, generally stayed there. Those that did not could always find a justification to move somewhere else. Know what I mean? As for a consistent pattern, I do not think there was one for all families. Some went here and some went there. Some went west, some went north but the majority after the RW went south. About the only direction they did not go was east, since most of them could not swim and had an aversion to taking a bath more than once a year. <grin> John R.
