    1. Re: [DANIEL-L] Warren County, NC Deed -- James DANIEL, deceased
    2. John, This appears to be James, brother of John Williams DANIEL. Mary ROYSTER was James" dau. who married David ROYSTER in Granville in Jan 1775. Zadock was son of John Williams DANIEL. James did, in fact, have a wife Sarah but I don't think we have established her surname. This is not the James that married Sarah COCKE to the best of my knowledge. I believe that James left a will in Kentucky about 1820. Mike Daniel

    3. Yes, Mike, that is who they were. As for the COCKE and COOKE assignments for the wife of this James DANIEL. I do not know which was correct. According to the story, COCKE was written through and change to COOKE on the records in Granville County, NC. The question is -- who made this change and when was it made. Generally the COCKE family seems to have been around this bunch and I know of no COOKES that were around them in Granville but maybe someone else has some knowledge on this COCKE-COOKE controversy. This was actually started about 10 years ago by a woman from Granville. Up until then, it was generally assumed Sarah was a COCKE and not a COOKE. Personally, I do not like records that have been changed, unless their is some documentation as to why the name(s) and/or specifics of those records were altered. A lot of county records are available to the general public and they are too easy for someone to alter to suit their view of a particular marriage, deed, etc. Any change to these records, unless there is documentation as to why they were changed, should always be treated with more than a slight degree of skepticism. Specifics in these county records, like the first answer that comes to mind when you take a test, are generally the right ones. Personally, I cannot see early DANIEL researchers picking it up as COCKE and all of a sudden it becomes COOKE. That, to me is not plausible, even if it was actually COOKE. John R.
