There are several scenarios that could result in non-surname matches. The most common is an MRCA that lived before the use of surnames became common. I have many 12 and 25 marker matches with other surnames. Only by upgrading to the 37 marker test would tell if the match was so close that some event that disrupted the surname descent had occurred. Such events would be infidelity, adoption, illegitimacy, or a deliberate surname change.
