Hi, All. A HATCHER researcher asked me to post this to the list to try to discover who this William DANIEL may be. Anyone know? "4-19-1788 William HATCHER witnesses Deed. Wilkes County, Ga. Deed Book FF page 70 William Womack NUNNELEE and wife Ann, to Thomas BURTON, all of Wilkes County, Ga.for 5 Pounds , both sides of Mc Gary's Creek 250 acres, adj. N.E. by Walter NUNNELEE, N.W. by William DANIEL S.W. by Walker RICHARDSON, bought from William MOSS, to be equally divided between Thomas BURTON & Elizabeth NUNELEE signed Wm. Womack NUNNELEE, Ann(X) her mark- Wit. William HATCHER, A. COLSON, James TAIT J.P. Regd 7-16-1789." Thanks for any assistance we may be able to give him. If you'd like to contact this researcher, just let me know. Robert
Hi, Robert, I'm going to _weakly_ suggest it could the William Daniel who eventually is cut into Elbert Co, based only on finding a tiny mention of a couple of the other names in your deed there. However, I don't know more on who this particular William Daniel is and can get way off in the ozone trying to i.d. him further. Here's the tiny connection: LDS film #209574 GA Elbert Miscellaneous probate records, 1791-1808 Book B-130, a huge estate starts on p.123. estate of Daniel Garvin. notes due: JOHN DANIEL $8.00 appraisal taken 23 March 1804 [sic, but this is a typescript], dated 23 Mar 1803 [sic, but this is a typescript], reg 24 Jun 1805, appraisers: Thomas Jones, THOMAS BURTON, WAT NUNELER [sic]. You can see I'm just making a possible leap to Elbert because the Nunnelee, Burton, and then this next is a William Daniel in Elbert around the same time and remotely named with the John Daniel. However, there are also Wilkes estate papers for a William Daniel in 1791 (Bk DD-72, I don't have) and a William Daniel in 1800. I put more on the Nathan Childs and the Rutherford NC connection, to see if it leads back to anything that others can help with. Book B-157 appraisal of estate of Nathan Childs, 5 Nov 1804, reg 1 Jul 1805, one bond on WILLIAM DANIEL, out of date, $000.00 Book C-8 sale estate Nathan Childs 4 Oct 1805 [there are other lists for different dates]: JOHN DANIEL, one cow and calf $12.18 3/4 Book C-102 1805 est Nathan Childs, acct of Littleton Johnson lists: September, "to my expenses going to Rutherford County NC in order to collect an old debt due the estate of N. Childs, deceased by David Webb of 26/14 North Currency [sic], which money can not be collected by the insolvency of said Webb". $15.37 1/2 14 Jan 1806, to cash paid AMS. DONNELL, as per receipt $0.70 Back to the tax records: I can't locate McGary Creek, it would help to have that. None of the other names in the deed appear still attached with a Daniel in the Wilkes Tax Lists of 1785-1805, i.e. as original grantee or a neighbor, etc. No doubt they appear independently, but I only took entries with a Daniel mention [from Wilkes County GA Tax Records 1785-1805, v.1-2 by Frank Parker Hudson 1996]. But there is a Hatcher named in this next, encouraging. In 1786 the William Daniel who is in the district eventually cut into Elbert has 1495 acres in Wilkes and 9 slaves and 250 acres in Franklin; in 1787 he has 1700 acres and 9 slaves. He is in the district labeled AAA by the author, defined as: AAA=Located in fork of Broad and Savannah River. Until part of BBB was taken in 1786, AAA stretched to the north along Coldwater Creek. Included town of Petersburg. Dec 1790 - entire district put into Elbert. The rank and arrangement for Elbert in Jun 1791 named CAPT HATCHER as commander of this the 1st District of Elbert described: "Beginning at the mouth of Broad River, thence to Bertram's Creek, thence up said creek to Allen's Road, thence along said road to Beaverdam [author inserts (Creek)], thence down the Beaverdam to Savannah River, thence to the beginning." 1790 - encompassed all of 192nd plus eastern edge of 190th in Elbert today. In 1790 William Daniel is named in District CCC with only 630 acres and 8 slaves. This district was cut from BBB which was cut from AAA, all eventually Elbert. CCC is defined as: CCC = First appears 1787. Residents had previously made returns in BBB. William Allen, the only person in this district returning stock in trade in 1790, is found as Capt of 12th Co of Elbert Co Militia Jun 1791, when boundaries were described as: "Beginning at the mouth of Coldwater Ck, running down the Savannah River to the corner of District No. 1 [author inserts (AAA)] at the mouth of Beaverdam, up the said Beaverdam to Cunningham's Road, thence along said road to Coldwater Creek, thence down said creek to the beginning." Area appears to be the now 195th and 196th of Elbert encompassing the community of Ruckersville. I don't have any good handle on all the different Daniel families in this area so I can't i.d. this William of Elbert much more, if he's even the correct one! I have a note that a William Daniel of Elbert sells 287.5a in Franklin on Tugalo Rv, Eastonalla Ck, granted to him, signed by Wm and Anne Daniel, written 22 Jul 1795, recd 16 Oct 1797. Then I get confused about how much and when to let the Wilkes and Washington records cross-over: a William Daniell was granted 287.5a as Citizen Bounty on 3 Oct 1785 (from Washington Co, GA Land Warrants, 1784-1787 by Mary Bondurant Warren and Jack Moreland Jones). If the William Daniel your correspondent is searching turns out to be in early Washington, it's a whole new ball game as far as identifying him. And I posted some other stuff from Elbert a while back, here's the parts that include a William Daniel, again from that Elbert probate film above, Diane is the pro on these guys: "The Old Book B" BK B p.1-3, 11 Dec 1795 sales acct est John Rogers Esq. decd. buyers: lots of Rogers throughout: James, Thomas, Nancy, Thomas, Benj, Mary; also Solomon Strickland, Wm. Chapman, Thos Brown, Randolph Holbrooks, John H. Johnston, Andrew Hemphill, Stephen Groves, WM. DANIEL (one lot of cattle, $26.00), Thomas Thomas, Wm. Carter, Jno Coil, David McCleskey, Francis Guttery, Henry Strickland, William Stroder, Henry Myers, John Johnson, William Davis, Stephen Stephens, Lewis Green, David Vineyard, Wm Carter, WM DANIEL (one gun $6.25), Negro Ben (one saddle $2.00), Stephen Young, ALLAN DANIEL (one lot of pewter $2.75), Thomas Barrow, James Ware, Samuel Nelson, David Robertson, John McDoniel, William Kellet, Thos Barron/Barren [I didn't put repeats of names, several of these are]. returned by James Rogers admr. recd 27 Jul 1796. [There are other cites for John Daniel in these probate records in 1795 and then in 1800s, don't know if he's related or a distinct line. He's in the same place at the same time, in some of the same or related records as William, but no direct transactions between the two that I have found.] Good luck to your correspondent, Pam in CA Robert Daniell wrote: > Hi, All. > > A HATCHER researcher asked me to post this to the list to try to > discover who this William DANIEL may be. Hello, Pam. On the HATCHERs behalf, thank you. I will pass this on. The "tiny connection" may be the key they need. Let's hope so. I appreciate your time and effort to help them, and maybe someone else who reads this. Robert ----- Original Message ----- From: "P. A.
