The course was the NGS American Genealogy Course and it was an excellent course on all of the major records types and repositories used in the U. S. It was a combination of correspondence lessons with field work (visiting courthouses, archives, etc. to do research) and writing. It took me a little over a year to complete and it taught me a little humility - I thought that I was already fairly knowledgeable about research. What was really cool was that right after I finished that course, I went up to Samford University in Birmingham, AL, for the Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research and took the week long Advanced Research Methodology course with Elizabeth Shown Mills. That, too, was a marvelous course, and I am starting to think that I might get to understand this stuff. He was one of 15 to finish the course.
