    3. Jack, The late Rev. Sam MAYO of Fitzgerald, GA, a Methodist Minister in the South GA Conference of the UMC, was a very good friend of our family in Fitzgerald, GA. Brother Sam's last conference church was St. Peter's Methodist in Valdosta, GA, as I remember. Sam, a widower, retired to Fitzgerald, GA AFT 1975 and married Verlin PATTEN, also a widow ABT 1980. During the time he lived in Fitzgerald, Brother Sam was an associate minister at Central United Methodist Church (Fitzgerald's First Church) in Fitzgerald, Ben Hill County, GA for quite a few years before his declining health forced him to retire, permanently ABT 1990. Brother Sam died ABT 1995, a few years after my mother, and Verlin a few years ago, ABT 1998. Brother Sam and Verlin were very good people. John R. 3. Joni, I do not know where these HUDSON were from but my bet is somewhere in the Pitt County, NC area, where Rhoda DANIEL (1755-1792) was from. We know from Pitt County, NC as well as Screven County, GA deeds that Rhoda was married to a Robert HUDSON. I have also never seen any definitive proof that Rhoda DANIEL was ever married to a Nathaniel HUDSON. When she died she was the widow of Robert HUDSON, Jr., according to my notes, and her 1792 will so states she was the relict (widow) of Robert HUDSON and there is no mention of a Nathaniel HUDSON nor is he a witness to this will, which makes me discount any marriage of Rhoda DANIEL to a Nathaniel HUDSON. There may well have been a Rhoda DANIEL who married a Nathaniel DANIEL but I do not think he was out of this bunch lined to this Pitt County, NC bunch. The HUDSON family often mention as the parents of Capt. Nathaniel HUDSON were William HUDSON and Frances GREENE of PE County, VA which seems to fit in with your Elbert County, GA information. << 1792 Will of Rhoda Daniel HUDSON, Effingham County, GA: Rhoda Hudson, relict of Robert HUDSON, Jr. To my four children got by Robert HUDSON, Jr. My husband deceased, viz., Samuel HUDSON, Robert HUDSON, Mary HUDSON and Maxfield HUDSON. Date of Will: July 1, 1791 - Witness: William COLSON, Sarah DANIEL and Enoch DANIEL Probate: 12 Nov 1792, Effingham County, GA MISC Records, Rec. Book 1, page 13 >>> John R. 3. Judy, I know all about William Coffee DANIEL and Martha SREVEN but was he the William who was in the GA Senate and appealed the conviction of Judge L. Q. C. LAMAR's death sentence of a man who was later found to be innocent of the crime, causing Judge LAMAR to kill himself? I think this was the same William. I also know he moved to Savannah after marrying Martha but I also know he owned a plantation named, Oglethorpe, in Burke County, GA and any DANIEL who was ever in Burke County, GA is always of interest to me, especially since his name was William C. DANIEL and my 2nd GGF was Robert C. DANIEL, even though they were of different generations. Judge LAMAR and William Coffee DANIEL were of the same generation born just several years apart.... John R. 1. [DANIEL-L] Re: HUDSONs
    2. We are dealing with two distinct bunch of HUDSONs viz-a- viz the DANIEL connections, namely those of Elbert Co GA (TAIT-OLIVER connection) and the Burke/Bulloch/Effingham/Screven (BBES) Cos GA bunch of Rhoda DANIEL-Robert and Nathaniel HUDSON. I haven't researched (just some light reading on) the Elbert Co bunch but suspect the TAIT-OLIVER connected bunch belong to Cuthbert HUDSON of the so-called "Hanover Co" (VA) bunch. The BBES HUDSONs were from Henrico/Chesterfield Cos VA and are cousins to the Hanover Co bunch as are the Amelia Co VA bunch. - one great big happy family.... Somewhere along the line, someone has taken Rhoda DANIEL's Nathaniel HUDSON of Effingham/Screven Co and made him the same person as one of the Elbert Co Nathaniel HUDSONs (and there were several). If anyone has any evidence to show or even suggest the two Nathaniels are identical there are a lot of us - including the Hudson Family Association - that would welcome said data with open arms. There are book references to Nathaniel in Effingham/Screven Cos as a grandson of Samuel HUDSON (the grandfather of Rhoda Daniels' hubbie, Robert HUDSON, Jr) and that Rhoda and hubbie #2, Nathaniel HUDSON, moved from Eff/Screven to Elbert Co in 1804. Does anyone have the documentation to support either of these two claims? So far, I haven't found either. Ruth: can you share a copy of the pages from "Early Settlers of Alabama" regarding those HUDSONs? many thanks Joni Date: Wed, 3 Dec 2003 21:32:50 -0800 From: "Ruth Newlan" <ruthann@saw.net> To: DANIEL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [DANIEL-L] Re: DANIEL-D Digest V03 #478 Hi Anne: I'd love to hear what you might be able to find at Baylor U - there should be quite alot on Charles Davis Daniel there, as that is where he graduated too. Talking about a missionary that was killed in China - Charles Davis Daniel's mother used the "Haseltine" name as her middle name - she was Mary Ann Haseltine Daniel - but, usually signed as Ann H. Daniel. I understand that the Haseltine's had been Baptist missonaries who had been killed or murdered in China. And, I've seen another Daniel woman who used Haseltine as her middle name, also. Regarding "Mayfield". What has recently peaked my interest is the name in connection with a couple of families that were collaterals of my Daniel family in Monroe Co., AL. My great+++ Aunt, Drucilla Daniel married Col. Asa Thompson Oliver in Brazil. I've recently been able to find out information about their son Asa T. Oliver, Jr., so I've been researching the Oliver line and the descendents of Rev. War Privateer Dioniysius Oliver who found Petersburg, Elbert Co., GA - which he named after his hometown of Petersburg, VA. And, in particular, the writing of Col. Edmund Sanders in his "Early Settlers of Alabama". Now, I know that not all in Col. Sanders works are accurate - but, I do give him credit for documenting a very interesting migration pattern, and a group of "hearding" families, of which the Olivers were one. There is only an occasional "Daniel" that marries into this group - but, there are a few of them. This is where the Hudson's connect, as part of this hearding family. The Mayfield's were also part of the heard. One - Martha Mayfield married Zimri Tate of Elbert Co. GA. There were also Maxwell's in this group, as were the Bibb's, Watkins, Winfrey, Williamson, Cobb, Banks, Webb, Cook, descendants of Christorpher Clark & Mildred Terrell, White's, McGeehee, Shelton, Shackelford, DeJarnette, Coleman, Colson/Coleson (just to name a few) - an interesting group of folks. And, most of them settled in Elbert Co for a while around 1800 or before, depending on the family. Take Care - Ruth in Portland, OR

    3. That right, John, when McDuffie was formed around 1870, that part of Columbia County went into it. The bulk of the Quaker colony in GA moved to Ohio ca 1803, but I am quite sure that many stayed behind. My Mayos were Quakers in NC, but several of the young men - including my ancestor - fought in the Revolution, and moved to GA following that war. It is like that some of the GA Quakers were in the Rev., too. Jack ----- Original Message ----- From: "John R. 3. I came across a listing of a William Daniel, Quaker, who joined the Quaker group at Wrightsboro, St. Paul's Parish, GA, receiving a land grant there in 1775. I remember some mention of the early Quakers in GA and thought it might be of interest to someone. Below is part of the info that went with the list of Quaker settlers. "THEY WERE HERE", June 1965, Published Quarterly Frances Wynd, Editor, Albany, Ga. 31705 , Page 2 QUAKER SETTLEMENT IN GEORGIA After Edmund Grey's abortive attempt to settle Quakers from Virginia in Georgia, nothing further was done until September 1767 when Joseph Stubbs presented a petition stating that "sundry families, at present residents of Orange County in the Province of North Carolina but lately from Pennsylvania, setting forth that they were desirous to remove into and become settlers in this Province and praying that a reserve of land for that purpose might be made for a certain time". This petition and later ones were granted. All of these petitions may be found in the various volumes of The Colonial Records of Georgia. Quakers from other sections joined the above and below is a listing of grants made to them in the Town and Township of Wrightsborough. The land lay originally in Old St. Paul Parish which became Richmond County. When Columbia County was out off from Richmond Co. Dec. 10, 1790, Wrightsborough fell into the new County. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lucy Gray" <lucygray1@cox.net> To: <DANIEL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, December 07, 2003 3:47 PM Subject: [DANIEL-L] Washington CO, GA Daniels > I was sent the following information by Connie Anderson of Colorado Springs, CO in 1981. 3. I was sent the following information by Connie Anderson of Colorado Springs, CO in 1981. I t was sent to her by the Genealogy Committee of Sandersville Public Library. "The History of Washington County, Georgia by Ella Mitchell, lists JOHN DANIEL among the early settlers who took up land grants in Washington County in 1786-1787. Also it lists the daniel among the ten men who founded Ohoopee Baptist Church, originally known as Brier Creek Church. The church was consecrated in 1792. The earliest records of Ohoopie Baptist Church were destroyed when Sherman's army mutilated the building. There is a reference that states that the deed to the land on which the church stands was made by WILLIAM DANIEL in 1795. William Daniel was a representative to the Convention of the Legislature in 1786. (It would be great if we knew which WILLIAM - Lucy's note) In the book of Division of eates, Washington County, 20th Dec. 1830, William Daniel is listed as one of nine heirs of DIOCLESIAH DAVIS. >From Watkins digest of Laws of Georgia, 1786, pp 346-354 The house of Thomas Jones was appointed as place to hold Superior court of Washington County on Aug. 14, 1786. The house was located on Griffin's Fork of Williamson Swamp Creek. Thomas Jones had a land grant in Washington County in 1786. A collection sale, Augusta chronicle, 1794, advertises 1000 acres on Buffalo Creek, Washington County, property of Thomas Jones. January 6th, 1812, Thomas Jones was commissioned Ensign in the 94th Dist. CO. of Militia, Washington County. Was there a predecessor Cub Creek in PA? I have marriages and collateral ties to that VA Cub Creek group into both my maternal lines -John Faulkner, b. 1750, Halifax/Antrim Parish, VA (via Tinsley, Vernon and Dillard, VA and NC to GA) and my still "parentless" Thomas Daniel, b. 1786 GA (via Vernon, Dillard, David, Almand, also VA, NC to GA). Can someone please furnish me with a URL or other address for the Kotter database so that I might peruse it for myself ? Thanks, Anne.

Makes you wonder how many of the descendants of those early settlers thought to retain the mineral rights when they sold their land??? There is also a Lamar County, formed in 1840, way up in Northeast Texas on the Red River, but no records I have seen so far mention where it got its name. 3. Lucy: Lamar High School in Houston was probably named for him. Richmond is 15 miles southwest of Houston, on a bend of the Brazos River (thus, the name of the county, Fort Bend), and one of the first couple of residents there was Mirabeau B. Lamar whose plantation is now completely within the city limits. Railroads went in there, cattle shipped to KS, cotton was King, and by 1934 there were eight producing oil fields within an 8-mile radius. 1. [DANIEL-L] James Daniel and Jean Kelso Daniel
    2. Payne Daniel
    3. To the List: In regard to the assignment of the James Daniel who married Jean Kelso, I have seen no reference to suggest that they were in the Middlesex family; however, I have seen various researchers work that place them in the family of Roger Daniell of Warrick Co., Va. Yes, that includes Mr. Worth Ray of 1945. Be that as it may, I am open sources that would place them elsewhere and we, Karen and I, have this assignment "under review". I have extensive notes on this James Daniel and his wife Jean, and her later marriage to James Cunningham Sr. [James Cunningham, planter of Parish of Cornwall in Charlotte Co., Va., made his will 30 December 1775. Mentions wife Anne and James Daniel (son-in-law) and Samuel Cunningham, his eldest. James Cunningham married the widow Jane (Kelso) Daniel in 1780 shortly before his death.] I will share those notes with anyone who is interested. We try not to deal with collateral generalizations in the compilation of these notes. So, what is at issue here, the legitimacy of the "Cunningham's of Cub Creek" or where this family should be placed. Perhaps DNA will help to solve this question as John suggest. Mr. Heinemann shows this James as the son of John Daniel of York County, and his wife Ann Bates, and he mentions his son James in his will; "I give and bequeath to my son James Daniel the other half of that tract of land in Hanover County lately bought, as aforesaid, to him and his heirs forever"; however, there is another view of the parentage of James. (Your compiler has assigned the children of John Daniel to "wife unknown"). Now, there are some who would says that John Daniel of York was not in the family of Roger Daniell Sr., of Warrick, but that position is open to review along with the myriad of other Daniel subjects we can dive into. I am still mystified that our esteemed cast of researchers can be so knowledgeable about so many Daniels and so lacking in info about my Marmaduke Daniel study. Somewhere out there is bound to be some opinion about the various Marmadukes, someone other than Randy and myself. Have a great weekend Ya'll. It's part of the same families that are connected with those in "Early Alabama Settlers". The name Cinncinatus - many of the men in these families belonged to the "Society Cinncinatus" - a Rev War Soldier's society, that I'd like to find out more about. I've looked to see if I couldn't find a roster to this Society - but, haven't found one yet. The Judge is too young to be a member of this society - but, his father might have been. - Ruth in Portland, OR ----- Original Message ----- From: "John R. 3. Jack, As for the LAMARS, it has been said that the History of GA would have been considerably different without the LAMARS and I have never seen anything to dispute that statement. There are occasionally a few families whose influence on the history rises to a level as to completely overshadow most of their contemporaries and the "Lamar's of Georgia" were one of those families. 3. Mike, Most information says Peter COFFEE, Jr. was born PE County, VA and died in Hancock County, GA. Ever person we know from PE ended up, not in Wake, but in Granville at one time or another and Peter is no different. Also, most Wake County, NC families came from Southside and not Middlesex or PE, as the general rule goes. Peter's attachment to PE, Granville and to the DANIELS makes me think the Kelso-Daniels may have been from the Middlesex bunch. It may take DNA to straighten out this line. <<< Marriage of Peter COFFY to Sarah Smith. Bond dated 14 Nov 1773. Signed by Peter COFFY and Jos. Alston.
