You guys just keep bringing up my ancestral lines. I am an Oliver descendant. Jane Oliver married William Henry Sheppard January 14, 1814, in Baldwin County, GA. They moved to Barbour County, Alabama - probably in the late 1830s. I have not really researched this line, yet, but I know that there were other Olivers in the area where they settled in Alabama. Correct, my family "O" does not show up after 1810. The O'DANIEL line out of NC circa 1755 that moved into Laurens, SC about 1760, and points west thereafter seems to have kept theirs. Joni. I have no disagreement with Rhoda marrying Nathaniel, Robert's brother, as a December bride, at all. I just cannot see her marrying him before she cut that deed in 1791 because of the way GA law was at that time. I also think the probability is pretty good they did not have any children of their own after 1791 because of her age at the time they were married and any children attributable to him were probably his from his first wife, whomever she was. Does this make any sense? My mother was a "fertile Myrtle" and had me when she was 41 (my dad, 52) and my brother when she was 42 but she lost a little girl at 44, so births at that age are very problematic. My wife and I had our last when she was 38 and my grandmother when she was 41, so conception and full term after age 40 are rare. It is possible that a 46-47 year old could conceive but the chances are pretty good, then and now, they would not go full term and be alive at birth. There are just too many problems when the mother is over age 35 and they really accelerate when the mother hits 40. John R. Robert, I have heard the TINLEYS came over with Oglethorpe like the MURPHEYS but no documentation was ever provided. All of that information is just like a lot of stuff we see on the list and other places -- you take it with a grain of salt. <grin> As for the Robert DANIEL who imported 2 slaves in 1820. That I will bet is my boy since there are no other Robert DANIEL in sight to my knowledge, especially one who lived near Augusta and my Robert had 10 slaves in 1820. The name, DANIEL, may make him hard to track but the name, Robert, is a very under used name in most DANIEL families. As for my Robert, this name is only a prominent given name in just a few families. 1. We have Robert in the Landgrave Robert DANIELL family of Charleston, SC. 2. We have Robert in more than one branch of the DANIEL Family of Middlesex County, VA. 3. We have Robert in the Cunningham-DANIEL or DANIELL family of PE County, VA and later Greene County, GA. * 4. We have Robert in the Thomas DANIEL or DANIELL Family from IOW County, VA So, my bet is my Robert is out of one of these four families and I really cannot tell you which one. If I know who was the parents of Chesley C. DANIEL of Burke County, GA (b. 1815, married an Anne) then I could tell you who their parents were because he is all over legal documents of my bunch and his name was always spelled Chesley. He completely disappears after 1850. We also know my Robert C. DANIEL spelled his name, possibly, as DANIELL and this is so noted on the 1830 Census record for Burke and the name, Robert, repeats in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th generation of this DANIEL family so it was a very prominent name in this family. As you will also note from the list, above, there are only three families that use the "Double L" spelling in whole or in part of these families (families 1,3 and 4). With the links I have to Greene, and Morgan County, GA, as well as links to many of the collateral CUNNINGHAM families, some of this information is real interesting since they, too, have branches of this family that use the DANIELL spelling, from time to time. Then, again, the O'DANIEL, Pitt and Edgecombe DANIEL families and my DANIEL bunch from Burke County, GA have many of these same collateral associations. Hi to All: John's talk about Cason's and NC got me to take a look at them and one thing lead to another - and this is what I've got. I've been working on the Olivers and this information & trying to find Asa T. Oliver Jr. and his family (his mother Drucilla is my great++aunt). In doing so I ran into a query about a Cason family that were connected to the Olivers. The Cason family took me to "Cason Scott" who married Tabitha Dixon. Tabitha Dixon was the grand aunt of Hasting Dixon Wainwright who married Lovey Davis - which was performed by "James Daniel, Sr." in Monroe Co., AL. The grandson's of this Cason Scott founded "Scottsville", Harrison Co., TX. And, they are buried in the Scottsville Cemetery in Harrison Co. They also have "Key" family connections & connections to the families written about in Early Settlers of Alabama. That to me kinda indicates they could very well be Middlesex Daniel's - because of the connection between the Daniel & Keys. James Daniel, JR and his father-in-law & grand-father-in-law - Samuel Graves and father John Graves are all buried in the Scottsville Cemetery. More later on all these relationships including Hudson - Ruth in Portland, OR P.S. John - I think you are Over Generalizing a bit regarding Pitt Co, NC - Many of the VA families moved into NC (such as Granville & Pitt) prior to their move to SC & GA. One such family is that of Richard Davis of Amelia Co., VA - moved to Granville Nc and died there - his son's Absolom, Chesley, Gideon and Lewis and migrated to Abbeville Dist SC and enlisted in Rev War - post war they lived in Elbert Co., GA.

I do read everything on the List, most more than once. Concerning the Jesse DANIEL of Richmond Co., GA being an O'DANIEL, I know of four Jesse DANIELs in the Fairfax O'DANIEL lines: 1. Jesse DANIELL, s/o James DANIELL (O'DANIEL of Fairfax, VA) of Fairfield, SC, died circa 1778. 2. Jesse DANIEL, the s/o William & Lucretia, married Martha S. BOND. This Jesse, executor of his brother Josiah's will, died in Edgefield in or before 1816. Martha DANIEL took an Adm'x Bond 6 June 1816. He would not be the Jesse who married Rebecca TINSLEY in Richmond County, GA in 1813. 3. Jessie DANIELL, b. aft 1873 in Thomas Co., GA?, s/o John Levi DANIELL and Emma M. POPE. This family moved to Bardwell, Ellis County, Texas before March 1891 when Emma died there. 4.. Jesse Daniell Auston DANIEL would have been 19 years of age in 1813. If the Jesse who married Rebecca TINSLEY was 19 at the time of the marriage in Richmond Co., this may be your link. Here is what I have on this Jesse DANIEL: In his will of 1797, James DANIELL bequeathed to his "grandson Jesse DANIELL AUSTON, son of Betty AUSTON, when he comes of age, the land lying on the Oconey that I lent to my son Levi DANIELL. I also give him one half of the Negroes that I have lent to my wife after the death of my wife Nancy DANIELL." James named 21 slaves lent to Nancy in his will. In an accounting of the estate of Levi DANIEL, dec'd, an 1802 entry shows payment to Lewis PARKER for boarding and schooling of Jesse "Osten" for 1801 and 1802. On 27 November 1807, at the age of 13, Jesse Daniel AUSTIN legally changed his name to Jesse DANIEL. This may have to be a result of Jesse's being adopted by John and Martha DANIEL, or that they were his family and guardians. (National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Volume 55, Names Changed Legally in Georgia, 1800-1856, Page 183.) In 1816, William HARDWICK, executor of the will of James DANIELL, returned to the Hancock County Court of Ordinary an account against Jesse DANIELL, a minor and legatee of James in the amount of eighteen hundred & ninety dollars, fifty one & one half cents, along with an account of money received for Jesse amounting to fifteen hundred & ninty three dollars and eighty nine cents. After Nancy Daniell BARROW died, on 12 March 1814, James BARROW filed "a schedule of all the Negroes with their increase now in life (except one Negro man Sanco sold by James BARROW) that were lent by the last Will and Testament of James DANIELL dec'd. to his widow and relict Nancy DANIEL, afterwards Nancy BARROW, wife of James BARROW, during her natural life: Old Tom, Zouer(?), Old Rachel, Charlotte, Hester, Flander, Acre, Daphney, George, Moriah, Hictor, Biner, Dover, Caty, Peter, Pompy, Peggy, Ned, Ellinney, Billy, Moriah, Levin, Becky, Bob, Rachel, Hector, Sam, Sally, Sucky, Driver, Jupiter, Bob, Ellick, Pompy, Flander." The Baldwin County, Ga Slave Owners 1850 Baldwin County Census shows a Jesse DANIEL with 20 slaves. This may be Jesse Daniell AUSTIN DANIEL, adopted son of John and Martha Pearson Cook DANIEL. Baldwin County bordered Hancock County where John and Martha lived, and was where his "step?-great grandmother" Nancy Daniell BARROW lived and died. John W. (William?) DANIEL, (s/o John and Martha DANIEL I think), is also on this list, as are many other associated/related family names, BUTTS, RICE, MITCHELL, JORDAN, and others. Considering that Jesse inherited "the land lying on the Oconey that I lent to my son Levi DANIELL" This 1850 Jesse in Baldwin may well be Jesse Daniell Austin DANIEL. Jack V. Ann "Nancy" Wise RATCLIFFE in Fairfax, VA. Nancy was the d/o Richard RATCLIFFE & Louisiana BOWLING. Louisiana's sister, Ann "Nancy" BOWLING, had m. Peter WISE. Remember that the 2nd wife of John O'DANIEL was not Ann BOWLING who was married to Peter Wise; his second wife was Ann "Nancy" McINTOSH, d/o John McINTOSH, and brother of Lochlin McINTOSH. Remember too that Robert Ratcliff DANIEL, b. abt 1800, was the s/o this Stephen and Nancy DANIEL. John, I am in the process of noting this complete message. I do read everything on the List, most more than once. Concerning the Jesse DANIEL of Richmond Co., GA being an O'DANIEL, I know of four Jesse DANIELs in the Fairfax O'DANIEL lines: 1. Jesse DANIELL, s/o James DANIELL (O'DANIEL of Fairfax, VA) of Fairfield, SC, died circa 1778. 2. Jesse DANIEL, the s/o William & Lucretia, married Martha S. BOND. This Jesse, executor of his brother Josiah's will, died in Edgefield in or before 1816. Martha DANIEL took an Adm'x Bond 6 June 1816. He would not be the Jesse who maried Rebecca TINSLEY in Richmond County, GA in 1813. 3. Jessie DANIELL, b. aft 1873 in Thomas Co., GA?, s/o John Levi DANIELL and Emma M. POPE. This family moved to Bardwell, Ellis County, Texas before March 1891 when Emma died there. 4.. Jesse Daniell Auston DANIEL would have been 19 years of age in 1813. If the Jesse who married Rebecca TINSLEY was 19 at the time of the marriage in Richmond Co., this may be your link. Here is what I have on this Jesse DANIEL: In his will of 1797, James DANIELL bequeathed to his "grandson Jesse DANIELL AUSTON, son of Betty AUSTON, when he comes of age, the land lying on the Oconey that I lent to my son Levi DANIELL. I also give him one half of the Negroes that I have lent to my wife after the death of my wife Nancy DANIELL." James named 21 slaves lent to Nancy in his will. In an accounting of the estate of Levi DANIEL, dec'd, an 1802 entry shows payment to Lewis PARKER for boarding and schooling of Jesse "Osten" for 1801 and 1802. On 27 November 1807, at the age of 13, Jesse Daniel AUSTIN legally changed his name to Jesse DANIEL. This may have to be a result of Jesse's being adopted by John and Martha DANIEL, or that they were his family and guardians. (National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Volume 55, Names Changed Legally in Georgia, 1800-1856, Page 183.) In 1816, William HARDWICK, executor of the will of James DANIELL, returned to the Hancock County Court of Ordinary an account against Jesse DANIELL, a minor and legatee of James in the amount of eighteen hundred & ninety dollars, fifty one & one half cents, along with an account of money received for Jesse amounting to fifteen hundred & ninty three dollars and eighty nine cents. After Nancy Daniell BARROW died, on 12 March 1814, James BARROW filed "a schedule of all the Negroes with their increase now in life (except one Negro man Sanco sold by James BARROW) that were lent by the last Will and Testament of James DANIELL dec'd. to his widow and relict Nancy DANIEL, afterwards Nancy BARROW, wife of James BARROW, during her natural life: Old Tom, Zouer(?), Old Rachel, Charlotte, Hester, Flander, Acre, Daphney, George, Moriah, Hictor, Biner, Dover, Caty, Peter, Pompy, Peggy, Ned, Ellinney, Billy, Moriah, Levin, Becky, Bob, Rachel, Hector, Sam, Sally, Sucky, Driver, Jupiter, Bob, Ellick, Pompy, Flander." The Baldwin County, Ga Slave Owners 1850 Baldwin County Census shows a Jesse DANIEL with 20 slaves. This may be Jesse Daniell AUSTIN DANIEL, adopted son of John and Martha Pearson Cook DANIEL. Baldwin County bordered Hancock County where John and Martha lived, and was where his "step?-great grandmother" Nancy Daniell BARROW lived and died. John W. (William?) DANIEL, (s/o John and Martha DANIEL I think), is also on this list, as are many other associated/related family names, BUTTS, RICE, MITCHELL, JORDAN, and others. Considering that Jesse inherited "the land lying on the Oconey that I lent to my son Levi DANIELL" This 1850 Jesse in Baldwin may well be Jesse Daniell Austin DANIEL. Jack V. Butler, (E-mail 12/02/02), provided this information to the List: National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Volume 58, Through Richmond County, Georgia, Importers of Slaves, Page 37 Daniel, Edmund, March 1820, 3 slaves Daniel, Jesse (Liberty) March 1818 8 slaves Daniel, John , May 1823 2 slaves Daniel, Jos., January 1818 3 slaves Daniel, Littleton (Washington), by John Daniel December 1819 5 slaves Daniel, Robert, March 1820 2 slaves Could this Jesse have been the Jesse in 4. above, I do not know. Liberty Co. may have been a little far south for this to be him. To reflect the correct relationship between this Sarah and Mary DANIEL, they were 1st cousins. "We also know that MAJ James ERWIN (1752-1815) of Midway Plantation, Allendale County, SC married Sarah DANIEL (1762-1815), d/o of William O'DANIEL, Jr. and Unknown. Her niece was Mary O'DANIEL who married Samuel TALBERT." This William O'DANIEL of Camden, SC, father of Sarah DANIEL who m. Major James ERWIN, was the brother of John O'DANIEL of Fairfax, VA, father of Mary DANIEL who m. Samuel TALBERT II. Mary O'DANIEL (1742-AFT 1798) Mary died after 16 Aug 1824, the date of Samuel TALBOT's will which was proven in May 1833. As to the WISE relationship to my O'DANIEL family: A direct relationship has not yet been established. Having said that, John O'DANIEL's son, Stephen DANIEL m. Ann "Nancy" Wise RATCLIFFE in Fairfax, VA. Nancy was the d/o Richard RATCLIFFE & Louisiana BOWLING. Louisiana's sister, Ann "Nancy" BOWLING, had m. Peter WISE. Remember that the 2nd wife of John O'DANIEL was not Ann BOWLING who was married to Peter Wise; his second wife was Ann "Nancy" McINTOSH, d/o John McINTOSH, and brother of Lochlin McINTOSH. Remember too that Robert Ratcliff DANIEL, b. abt 1800, was the s/o this Stephen and Nancy DANIEL. According to the information on a TALBOT website, William TINSLEY & Nancy TALBOT had four children between 1815 and 1821: Allison, James Daniel, Mary Ann, & John Nickolas. Nancy TALBOT died before 1824 when her father's will mentioned her as deceased. As I remember, there was a TINLEY researcher last year who addressed this proposal and was quite adamant that the TINLEYs you are speaking of were definitely not TINSLEYs, although I cannot put my fingers on her message(s) at the moment.
