Hi, I like this DANIEL bunch over in LaGrange a lot. I also like the DICKINSON connection to it, as well. I also liked your reference to the "Demonocratic Convention," which I assume means that your family has now seen the light. <grin> I talked with a man over in LaGrange several years ago and asked him about physical descriptors for this LaGrange DANIEL family, since they already seem to have met the financial and educational profile of my bunch to a tee. He told me they were short, of thin frames, fair and light headed, etc., another match with my DANIEL bunch. Was this DANIEL family part of the one that had a CANNON-CASON connection to it. If so, I am really interested..... I am going to forward you, via of a separate message, a picture of my GGF, Robert W. DANIEL taken in 1863 in Savannah. Let me know if you see anything familiar in it. John R. Sharlene, Are you sure this bunch was not a Huguenot family? Lord Berkeley gave a bunch of land to them in the Henrico area of VA and founded Manikin Township before 1700, as I remember. The LANIERS, CHASTAINS, RENEAUS and others of French descent flooded into this area of VA and that CHERIE name sure does not sound like to me to be of English origin.... Have you looked for a De CHERRIE or something like that for them? For those of you that do not know, the name, Huguenot, who were actually Scottish, German or Swiss Calvinists that had been persecuted by the Catholics and others in the old country, is pronounced with a silent "T" - Hugeno.... BTW, I double checked with the same college professor of history who has done a lot of research on these Huguenot families of SC and VA and he said that if any person, college professor not withstanding, ever stated these Huguenots switched over to the Church of England, they did not know what they were talking about. The reason being -- their religious beliefs were totally contrary to those of the Church of England because many of them were of Scottish descent and the Scots loathed the English and all of its institutions and secondly, they were Protestants and the Church of England was never a Protestant religion. This Huguenot influence was also one of the primary reasons the Presbyterian Church became one of the major religions in the south in later years and since the Cub Creek CUNNINGHAMS were also Presbyterian, they and their associated families may well have been descendants of this same overall Huguenot migration. Forget what you read on some website or want to think, the facts are -- the South was settled, primarily, by persons of either Irish or Scottish descent. This hatred of anything "English" hung around and became, later, one of the underlying reasons for the Civil War. I know there are some who want to link their families descend from some prominent English family, preferably titled, but I am afraid they will find such not to be the case in a most Southern lineages. Most Southerners primarily descend from a mixture of Scottish, Irish, German, French and Native American ancestors with just enough English thrown in to make us occasionally boring and insulting. That said, I am a typical Southerner and proud of it. <grin> John R. Ruth, Your DE JARNETTE could have become JARRETT or something like that, later. Most families generally dropped the DE, pretty early. I do not know about any Indian links in this family but as you know, Native American descent, was generally not acknowledged by most of these Southern families because census takers would list them as being "of color" and there was no way most of these families, including mine, wanted this "colored descriptor" attached to their families, for the obvious reasons. <grin> As to whether they were or not, olive skin and high cheek bones are usually a dead give away for Native American descent. However, our youngest daughter is a perfect blue-eyed blonde and she is ABT 1/32, Tuscarora. Our oldest daughter has many typical NA features - dark hair, brown eyes, etc, as do I. Their mother is fair, blonde with hazel eyes, also of Prussian descent, so my blond, blue-eyed DANIEL genes linked up with my wife's blonde and blue-eyed genes, the second time around. The funny part is, our youngest daughter (the blonde) has the olive skin and is long waisted, like me, and our oldest is short waisted with fair skin, like her mother. It is funny how all of these genes match up to give some pretty interesting and sometimes even novel results, isn't it? John R. Ruth, It is DE JARNETTE and they were from PE County, VA, according to my notes. I have one DE JARNETTE who married Edward MCGEHEE (1699-1770) and they moved to Cumberland County, VA. They were the parents of Micagah MCGEHEE who married Nancy Anne Baytop SCOTT, the d/o Capt, James SCOTT and Frances COLLIER of Caroline County, VA, later somewhere in SC. Ann's sister, Lucy SCOTT, married Reuben COLEMAN and they ended up in Augusta, GA; sister Mary SCOTT, married James STUBBS and they ended up in Putnam County, GA; General John SCOTT married Eliza Ann COLEMAN and he ended up in Lowndes County, Alabama. Some of this SCOTT information smells because the birth dates do not match up with the DOB of their parents and someone may have cobbled up several generations into one which happens all the time. Anyway, you get the idea of the families you are looking at even if the parental links are off one generation. John R. Robert, Another reason I think the McINTOSHS may link back to the Fairfax, VA area is that Joseph FLETCHER married, 1st, Elizabeth McINTOSH but he married, 2nd, a Louisa HENDRICKS ABT 1807 in Bulloch County, Georgia and your Mary DANIELL (O'DANIEL), d/o James DANIELL (ABT 1720-1797) and Nancy, married Dr. Robert HENDRICK in 1795 in Columbia, Richland County, SC. A family link back to the Fairfax County, VA area, a possibility..... John R. Robert, Anytime I see a family from one place marrying a family in another place, I always think there was probably an earlier connection in the original location of the other family. In this case, the FLETCHERS were from Accomack County, VA and "they say" the McINTOSHS were from Berkeley County, SC, two rather dissimilar locations. My bet is they were both probably from the same general area of VA, at some point in time, or had family links back in the "old country," in this case, Scotland. However, by the time of the RW it seems that both families were located in Marion District, SC area -- Georgetown and Horry area. As you know this was also the Cheraw area where a lot of Huguenots moved, otherwise known as the French Pee Dee. No one seems to have any parental links for either Joseph McINTOSH or Elizabeth PERRYMAN, which makes me wonder about these families. However, the marriage records say that Joseph McINTOSH married Elizabeth PERRYMAN on 5 OCT 1727 in St. Andrews Parish, Berkeley County, South Carolina. Of their children listed, Elizabeth McINSTOSH married William FLETCHER from Accomack County, VA; Mary McINTOSH married James CONYERS and there is no information on a Lachlan(a) McINTOSH who some list as a female and some, a male. I also carry a CONYERS family from Stafford County, VA in this same time frame, which makes me think the McINTOSH's were probably originally from the same general area of VA as the FLETCHERS - Fairfax, Stafford, Accomack. A bunch of PERRYMANS also migrated from VA to the Edgefield, SC area and we know another VA family who migrated to this same area, don't we -- the O'DANIELS. This FLETCHER and McINTOSH bunch may have migrated a little earlier to SC than the O'DANIELS but they seem to have followed the same general path - upstate VA to upstate SC, down state to the Edgefield, SC area and later across the Savannah River into GA. Just a hunch, but they may be out of your VA bunch. It always surprises me the historical genius some researchers exhibit when they link up families that come from completely different locations and have no prior family connections. Such, was seldom the case in these early families. In these early Colonial families, most parent's children always married children of their friends, their traveling companions, their neighbors and most especially, someone who was already a part of their family, like a cousin of some variety, even if they had to go back to the "old country" to get them. The typical best pick by the parents for the spouse for a son or daughter was a second cousin -- the grand children of siblings. Parents would, occasionally, let first cousins marry if a suitable spouse could not be found at the "second cousin level" but parents usually tried to keep most marriages at this level if their child's spouse was from within the family. Contrary to all of the many romantic novels we see from this period, love was not a prerequisite for marriage in colonial times. John R. Oh! So, we're still talking about the "Early Settler's of Alabama" Herd. The Scott's are probably the same general family that migrated out of GA to Copiah Co., MS and then on to Harrison Co., TX where they founded Scottsville just outside of Marshall. My greatgrand father is buried in the Scottsville Cemetery there. - Ruth in Portland, OR ----- Original Message ----- From: "John R. I look for descendants of German immigrants in Brazil. Carl Liermann from Herzebrock in Westphalia emigrated on 5 May 1923 at the age of 22 years as well as Johann Brockelmann (19 years) with the ship "Crefeld" from Bremen to Rio de Janeiro. Since that time one heard nothing more of the two. Hi John and Robert: I really know nothing about O'Daniel - but, I might need to learn. I have a Moses Medlock/Matlock (b. SC) who marries Nancy DeJarnett Perryman. Although we can't seem to connect Nancy with any family, except possibly a Richard Perryman - I've been told that the Perryman's were Creek Indians. There was also a Scout in Alabama Territory about the same time Sam Dale had the caneo fight in AL - who was named McIntosh & he was also of part Creek descendancy. Seems to me that I'd read that this McIntosh was related to Lachlan - I've read that he always wore his Clan tartan into battle. I've seen pictures of him on-line. Do either one of you know anything about this folks? - Ruth in Portland, OR ----- Original Message ----- From: "John R. John, As one McINTOSH researcher told me, unscrambling the McINTOSH lines in the colonial period of America is like following a single strand in a large bowl of spaghetti without being able to move any of it. The History of Baldwin County, Georgia by Anna Maria Green Cook, 1925, pages 361-2, provides this: "John Mohr McINTOSH, born in Badenoch, Scotland, in 1700, according to a record in his family Bible, "Took shipping on board the "Prince of Wales," Capt. George DUNBAR, at Inverness, October 1735, with some hundred of sons for the new Colony of Georgia, came in at Tybee Bar the beginning of January, 1736, and landed at Darien, on the Altamaha river, the place of their destination, the 1st of February, same year." He married Marjory FRAZIER of Garthmore, 4th of March, 1724. They brought with them six children born in Scotland, Ann, called Nancy, being born in Georgia, 18th April, 1737. As Captain of the Highlanders, who came over with him, John McINTOSH joined Oglethorpe in fighting the Spanish in 1740-42, being also a member of the Provincial Assembly held in Savannah in 1751. His sons, William and Lachland, served in the Revolution, the first attaining the rank of Colonel, the second Major-General, so the family early won the sobriquet, "the fighting McIntoshes." This may settle who Major General Lachlan McINTOSH was. His sister, Ann "Nancy" married Robert BAILLIE, Esq. at Barrington in the late 1750s, and signed her name "ANN MACKINTOSH" in a letter to Robert. A Joseph was not named in the three MACKINTOSH pedigrees listed in the cited History. The John McINTOSH of Stafford, later P.W., then Fairfax County, VA appears to have been established there when John Mohr McINTOSH arrived in GA in 1736. Lachlan is as common in most of the McINTOSH families as William, James, Martha and Elizabeth are in the DANIELs. All part of the same problem. Gadsden County, FL? In a great air traffic control term, "Hand off." Robert ----- Original Message ----- From: "John R. Robert, I thought this was real interesting, RE the SCOTTS of Newberry, SC since one of your O'DANIEL girls, d/o John O'DANIEL married, 2nd, a William SCOTT. William SCOTT born 1728 married a Mary MILTON, see notes below. They had a son, William SCOTT born 1758 in Antrim County, Ireland who married UNK and guess where he died -- Claiborne County, MS. Very, very interesting, especially since I also know of another fellow who died in this same county, named DANIEL. William's sister, Ann SCOTT b. 1760 in Ireland married a William BEAN II they migrated to Christian County, KY After his death, she married an EDWARDS and died in IL. <<< Note: Immigrated to Charleston SC in 1767, arriving on Dec 31 aboard ship, the snow, James and Mary together with wife Mary and 5 children; James, William, Ann, Robert and John; 4 more children were born in SC >>> John R. Robert, The one big McINTOSH line I carry is the one out of St. Andrews Parrish, Berkeley County, South Carolina but it probably had links back to VA and NC; a lot of these families had similar family links. I know also this South Carolina McINTOSH family had links to the FLETCHER family of Accomack County, VA and Accomack is near your O'DANIEL bunch in Fairfax County, VA, isn't it? The specific family I am referring to is Joseph McINTOSH (b. ABT 1695) of Berkeley County, South Carolina. He was married to am Elizabeth PERRYMAN and the PERRYMAN family is also tied to the DANIELL family of Charleston, as I remember. However, your Lachlan McIntosh bunch may tie to the MOORE family out of Princess Anne County, VA because Lachlan is name in this MOORE family, some of which migrated to NC with the MOYES. We also know this PA County, VA MOORE family descended from Gov. James MOORE of SC. The following is the children of William FLETCHER and Elizabeth McINTOSH. Elizabeth (1729-1806) was the d/o Joseph, listed above. One son, John FLETCHER (1765-1860) married Susannah MIZELL were they were the parents of Zabud FLETCHER, Sr. (1807-1864) and two of his kids married DANEL kids down in the Gadsden County, FL.
