    1. [DANIEL-L] Re: Aaron DANIEL, Bulloch Co
    2. Oh Dear, AOL did it again! the Tab between the name Aaron DANIEL and the County Bulloch disappeared........ The Land record is for Aaron DANIEL of Bulloch Co who took possession of Lot 16, 5th District, Wilkinson Co GA on 27 Aug 1806. That URL has a detailed list of other lucky 1805 Land Lottery winners. She died in Bulloch County, GA in 1809. Dianah was the sister of Ann STAFFORD who married Capt. Israel Roberson BIRD of Bryan County, GA and Mary who married an Elijah SADLIFT (sic). Thomas Peter STAFFORD, their father, was the brother of Mary STAFFORD who married John MAY and their daughter, Elizabeth MAY, married Josiah DANIEL, Capt. Aaron's brother. The BIRDS were from Berks County, PA. Israel's grand daughter, Anne Elizabeth BIRD (1807-1869), married Capt. Enoch DANIEL (1799-1863) of Taylor's Creek, Liberty County, GA. His son, Dr. Thomas Staley DANIEL, DDS (1850-1896) married Annie Cecile DONOVAN (1859-1905), the daughter of Nancy Collins DANIEL and Tim DONOVAN of Bethany, Jefferson County, GA. Enoch was the son of Abraham DANIEL and Jane MOORE of Liberty Co., GA and Abraham is described as a son of Capt. Aaron DANIEL. Nancy Collins DANIEL (1837-1890) was the d/o James L. DANIEL (1814-1857) and his first wife, Mary MURPHEY (ABT 1815-BEF 1840) whom he married in 1834 in Richmond County, GA. She was the d/o Rev. Nicholas MURPHEY of the GA Conference and his wife, Nancy COLLINS of Hephzibah, Richmond County, GA. James L. DANIEL, Nancy Collins DANIEL, Tim DONOVAN (1832-1895), Dr. DANIEL and his and Annie's kids are buried in the Bethany East Cemetery, Wadley, Jefferson County, GA in the Tim DONOVAN Family plot. His brother, William DONOVAN and their parents and children are buried in a lot right next to them in the same cemetery. Nicky MURPHEY and Lovick PIERCE were good friends and all of this bunch was Methodist, even the DONOVANS, who became Methodist after their oldest daughter, Ellen DONOVAN, was molested by their parish priest. So, some things don't change, do they. <grin> The James L. DANIEL, listed previously, was a younger brother of my GGF, R. W. DANIEL of the same city - Bethany, GA. He married Mary Jane RENEAU, d/o Rev. Russell RENEAU, a PE in the GA Conference. The family story is -- these two DANIEL families were not related and it comes from reliable sources -- Smith Calloway BANKS, Historian of Bulloch County, GA, who married Dr. Thomas S. DANIEL's grand daughter. The DONOVANS, who had migrated from County Cloin, Ireland to the US in the 1820's and Jefferson County, GA ABT 1850, were heavily involved in the GA Railroad before the CW -- they cut all of the cross ties, provided wood for bridges, etc. for this railroad before the CW and after. The DONOVANS were the richest family in that end of Jefferson County, GA, along with the TARVERS, who were also collateral with my DANIEL bunch. The DONOVANS even changed the name of Bethany, GA to Wadley, GA in honor of the President of the GA Railroad. Since they were collateral with the DANIELS, I am sure my DANIEL bunch had similar attachments to the GA Railroad, too. FYI, The STAFFORDS, MAYS and DANIELS migrated from the Pitt County, NC area to Beaufort District, SC, shortly after the end of the Revolutionary War and cleaned up on the land that had been confiscated from the Tories of the area. A lot of these land transactions were not at the "highest bid" or "at arm's length," either. <grin> John R. 1. [DANIEL-L] Orange County, VA DANIEL family
    2. John R. Clarke
    3. Good Afternoon, I found this in the Orange County VA Archives. I assume someone knows this DANIEL family. The reason I found it interesting is because the MERRY family is tied to this bunch, as well as the John WATTS family of Culpeper Co, VA. What is really interesting is the STEVENS and THOMAS family that is tied to this bunch. Also, notice the Charles DANIEL listed in this family. According to my best information this is the Charles DANIEL, Jr. and Sarah TATE family of Hanover, later Warren County, NC. Charles, Jr. was the son of Charles DANIEL, Sr. and Jane MICKELBOROUGH of Middlesex County, VA, later Orange County, GA and Charles, Sr. was a son of Capt. William DANIEL of Middlesex County, VA. The children of John WATTS (1722-1796) and Sarah BARNETT (b. 1726) of Culpepper County, VA, later Clark County, KY are listed below this excerpt. The interesting part in the MERRY connection is that Thomas MERRY II ( (1710-1756) of Orange County, VA had lots of business dealings with Larkin CHEW, Sr. of Caroline County, VA, who was the GGF of Elizabeth Pratt WEIGHTMAN (1791-1819) who married Chesley DANIEL, Esq. of Marion, Marion, SC in 1811 in Raleigh, Wake County, NC at Judge POTTERS home. It seems like there was a Joseph DANIEL that married a Millie DUNCAN and this family floated around this Middlesex bunch, somewhere. I hope it helps someone....... The following is taken from our book, Pamunkey Neighbors of Orange County, Virginia. <<< Joseph Duncan married Nancy Stevens. (Nancy Stevens was the Dau of John Stevens and Sarah Mountague his Wife, the eldest of two Daus of Peter Mountague and Anthorit his Wife) Joseph and Nancy moved to Clark County, Ky. 3. Diane, Yes, I know what that Effingham County, GA record says but someone submitted to the list a will or deed which lists her first husband as Samuel TYSON, Sr. born 1744 the son of John TYSON and Bethany HINES of Pitt County, NC and this Samuel, Sr. died in 1771 in Beaufort District, SC. They had a son, Samuel TYSON, Jr. b. ABT 1770, who married Elizabeth STAFFORD. I am pretty sure the MAY-DANIEL marriage was also confirmed by Koy JOHNSTON in his 1976 letter to Mrs. Lucy GRAY. He was a direct descendant of Col. Amos JOHNSTON who married Josiah and Elizabeth's daughter, Elizabeth DANIEL. As I remember, they were not married in Effingham County, GA. They were married over in SC, as I remember. A Black Swamp Church or something like that. Now, I believe that is the way it went. The problem with genealogical information in that area of SC is the Yankees burned all of the courthouses, much as they did in Washington, Burke and Jefferson County, GA and there are no civil records for the period prior to the CW and where they are no records - there are those who find a way to create them. 3. My guess on Seth is -- he was the son of Josiah DANIEL and Elizabeth MAY of Beaufort District, SC. Seth was born ABT 1777, the 3rd child of Josiah and Elizabeth. Some people call her Elizabeth DIXON but this is incorrect. She was Mrs. Samuel TISON, Sr. when she married Josiah but her maiden name was MAY, d/o John MAY and Mary STAFFORD of Pitt County, NC, later Beaufort District, SC. Actually, they lived in Danielton, Jasper County, SC. Josiah married Sarah COX, widow of Thomas CAMPBELL as his second wife in 1795. Elizabeth MAY (1740-BEF 1795) had died prior to this marriage but they had four children. Children: William married Margaret BRYAN, Elizabeth married Col. Amos JOHNSTON, Seth married Mary KENNEDY and Josiah, Jr. died as a young man in 1819. John R. Subject: Papers of the Manker and Youmans families / 1996 http://www.sc.edu/library/socar/uscs/1996/manker96.htm SOUTH CAROLINIANA LIBRARY UNIVERSITY SOUTH CAROLINIANA SOCIETY MANUSCRIPTS COLLECTIONS Papers of the Manker and Youmans families One hundred sixty-eight manuscripts, 1809-1895, of the Manker and Youmans families center around two principal figures, Lewis Manker (1782-1862) and Thomas Youmans. In addition to bills and receipts, Confederate tax-in-kind documents, and land and legal papers, the collection includes military commissions issued to Thomas Youmans. That of 1 January 1849, signed by Gov. Whitemarsh B. Seabrook, commissions Youmans "Cornet of the Prince William Hussars, a corps of Cavalry belonging to the Lower Squadron 4th Regiment and 2nd Brigade of Cavalry, and attached to the 2nd Division of South Carolina Militia." Another, 7 July 1863, signed by Gov. M.L. Bonham, appoints him first lieutenant in Co. D, 2nd Regiment State Troops. Thomas Youmans is further documented through legal instruments, correspondence, and receipts revealing his involvement as administrator of the estate of Lewis Manker and as guardian of nieces Cornelia and Matilda Youmans, daughters of Stephen P. Youmans. The U.S. oath of allegiance sworn by Youmans at Savannah, Ga., on 25 May 1865 identifies him as a farmer and resident of Allendale, Beaufort District. Thomas Youman's postwar agricultural pursuits are substantiated by a labor contract, 1 January 1866, with freedman Handy Boicker and family. According to the terms of the contract, signed by Youmans and four freed persons-Handy, Moses, Winfield, and Jane-Youmans was to furnish them with "good quarters and lands for cultivation[,] two mules or horses, all necessary farming impliments and to feed said mules or horses at my expense." Youmans was entitled to "use said mules or horses, at any time that will not be detrimental to the crop of said parties" and to "give them the one thirds of the crop raised by them in the year 1866 after deducting for...provisions." The freed persons were to provide their own food, clothing, and shoes and to pay their own taxes and medical bills. Furthermore, they were to forfeit fifty cents for each day's absence from labor, either in sickness or health. Another member of the Youmans family, Julius P. Youmans, is represented here by two primary documents. An 18 May [18]86 letter from Brig. Gen. John C. Minott, 1st Cavalry, S[tate] V[olunteer] T[roops], offers Maj. Youmans the position of ordnance officer on his staff, and a thousand dollar life insurance certificate issued by Brunson Lodge No. 1005, Supreme Lodge Knights and Ladies of Honor, 3 March 1885, names Youmans' mother, Julia E. Youmans, as beneficiary. Also significant are a receipt, 20 October 1834, from Seth Daniel to Lewis Manker acknowledging payment of three hundred twenty-five dollars for "a negro Girl named Caty about thirteen years of age" and a unit of antebellum Beaufort District land grants, deeds, and plats tracing the transfer of property in Prince William's Parish, in particular the vicinity of Corker Swamp, and Gillisonville. | 1996 Manuscripts Collections | 1996 USCS Program Menu | South Caroliniana Library | - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This page copyright =A9 1996-97, The Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina. 1. [DANIEL-L] Notice - annual Rootsweb maintenance upgrade coming soon.
    2. John R. Clarke
    3. Good Morning, As most already know, most of the Rootsweb servers are down, probably for maintenance, something they always do about this time of the year. I am also sure their Rootsweb Mail Servers will go offline pretty soon - for all lists. Just so you will know, none of your messages will be lost during this maintenance upgrade but you will not be receiving them as you normally do - in a timely fashion. So, please take this into consideration should you stop receiving messages from our list and please do not post messages to the list asking "What happened?" or "What's wrong, I have not gotten anything from the list today." <grin> Thanks, your List Administrator. John R. Clarke Thomasville, GA

    2. MIKE, The DANIEL names that do appear in my line that came thru Illinois and ended up in Arkansas for the 1880 census are: Isaiah, William, James, Peter M., Reese, Brice, Asbury and Edmund. The last three names are not very common, but I have seen them on this list in reference to DANIEL Families from the South East US (GA, SC, etc.) so I feel there must be a connection. Thanks jIMMY

    3. Folks, Anytime you have a problem with any URL, just delete the file name at the end back as far as the directory slash. In this case, delete the results.cfm from the end of the listed URL and you come up with the following. It is also smart to do the same when you send a URL to someone else. 3. Hi, I am sure you know that Reuben Daniel is not a big DANIEL name so assuming the name was a "Family" name there are only a couple of locations to start looking. There is the Reuben Daniel b. ABT 1756 of the Middlesex Clan and there is the Reuben Daniel b. ABT 1758 of the James DANIEL and Sarah COCKE line out of Goochland County, VA. The latter line has the HARRISONS in it and a lot of the HARRISONS bounced into the Ohio Territory and probably later IN, IL and KS. John R.
