    3. ARE there any proved descendants of most of these men? Seems like there are some for James of Essex, John and Thomas of Isle of Wight, and William of Middlesex, but I do not know of any proved lines from these other men, though have to admit I am not familiar with all of them. I know there are proved descendants of the line of Gov. Robert Daniel of the Carolinas, too. We have DNA from all of the lines mentioned above, excepting Gov. Daniel. Does anyone know of any proved lines from these other men? Thanks, Kevin Gerald Daniel wrote: > Payne, > > How many descendants of John Daniell of York County, James of Essex, > William, another John, Richard, Roger Daniell of Warwick County, Va, > Hugh Daniel have submitted DNA samples for testing? 3. Mike, Mine records are not, as relates to the SCREVENS. First, I do not like the assignment of Dr. William Coffee DANIELL to Charles DANIEL and then Thomas and Sarah BURNEY of Greene County, GA. Something does not smell right, there. I have no disagreement with Dr. DANIEL being a son of Charles DANIEL of Greene County, GA who died in 1800 or whenever but who he married and the money he had does not match up with the Thomas DANIEL and Sarah BURNEY bunch. It matches up much closer with the high stepping CUNNINGHAMS, than with the BURNEYS, especially since this CUNNINGHAM bunch was also all over the COFFEES. As relates to the SCREVENS. I too, had a problem getting them straight. MAJ John SCREVEN, Jr. (1777-1830) married twice. Martha's mother was his first wife, I think, Hannah PROCTOR whom he married in 1797. He married, second, her sister, Sarah PROCTOR, in 1803. Martha's brother, Dr. James Proctor SCREVEN (1799-1859) was in partnership with Dr. DANIEL in Savannah. He married Hannah Georgia BRYAN, d/o the Hon. Joseph BRYAN, Esq. of Savannah, later, Nonchalance Plantation, Wilmington Island, Chatham County, GA. Her mother was Delia FOREMAN, born Maryland, died at their plantation on Wilmington Island, GA. Martha and James also had a sister, Amelia Sophia SCREVAN and I do not know who she married. I am pretty sure the PROCTORS were the same PROCTORS out of Charleston, which is where MAJ SCREVEN was born. He was the son of Col. John SCREVEN, Sr. and Elizabeth PENDARVIS and grandson of James SCREVEN, Sr. and Mary Hyrne SMITH. Mary was the d/o Landgrave Thomas SMITH, Jr. and Mary HYRNE, all of Charleston. Get this, Elizabeth PENDARVIS (1755-1804) was the d/o Josiah PENDARVIS and Mary BEDON, d/o Richard BEDON and Martha FULLER of Charleston, SC. Her brother, Josiah, married a STROBO. This PENDARVIS bunch in Charleston gets a little convoluted because there are some name changes -- PENDARVIS to BEDON is one of them but the fact remains there are not only connections in it to other Charleston families. One of the interesting PENDARVIS links is to the Ann PENDARVIS who married James O'DANIEL (1760-1826) of Kershaw County, SC, son of William O'DANIEL, Jr. and UNK of Kershaw County, SC, formerly of Fairfax County, VA. His brother, John O'DANIEL married a McINTOSH, another Charleston family and the McINTOSH's of Charleston are also tied to the FLETCHERS of the same location. We also know that DANIELS also tied to FLETCHERS, later. We also know this O'DANIEL family also used the DANIELL spelling. The primary reason I question the William Coffee DANIEL assignment is because the links in this bunch point right back into the families of Charleston, as do my DANIEL bunch. I cannot tell you who his parents were but the links in his family point right back to Charleston, SC, even the double L spelling of his name. However, O'DANIEL is a real possibility because they, too, used the double L spelling of the DANIEL name. This may also be a "class marriage" and not a family marriage, I do not know but what I do know is WCD was not the grandson of a itinerate Baptist preacher. Of that, I am pretty sure. His brother, Smith Coffee DANIEL also matches the same profile, as Dr. DANIEL. I am also pretty sure this was the same William DANIEL of Savannah who was in the GA Senate and appealed the death sentence imposed by Judge L. Q. C. LAMAR, Sr. of Milledgeville in 1831 on a Methodist minister, accused of killing his wife's younger sister. These were not "po folks" and people who attended medical college of any variety in the 1820's came from good families of more than moderate wealth. I am also pretty sure they were on a equal financial footing with the LAMARS of GA. After all, Judge LAMAR's son, L. Q. C. LAMAR, Jr. was an Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court. Justice LAMAR was educated at Oxford, the Methodist college in Newton County, GA and in 1850 my Professor Winfield M. RIVERS (1824-1905) of James Island, SC, a graduate of Charleston College, was residing in the same household with Justice LAMAR's mother, Sarah Williamson Bird LAMAR, in Oxford, Newton County, GA. Professor RIVERS married my GGM, Mary Jane RENEAU (1830-1912), after the death of my GGF, Robert W. DANIEL, in 1865, so there is a family attachment between my DANIEL or DANIELL family and these other families. Also, Mary Jane's uncle, Norris RENEAU, ran a fleet of privateers for the CSN out of Savannah during the CW, so I also have connections to Savannah in this bunch. Also, Dr. William Coffee DANIEL owned a plantation, named Oglethorpe, in Burke County, GA and my DANIEL bunch was also from Burke County, GA, originally. A link between all of this bunch -- I do not know. John R. 3. As I enter my eighth year of Daniel research I read back over my old files and marvel that I arrived at this point with out quitting in desperation. So, here are some of the puzzlers that still face my work and that of others; I will share a few comments. As always I will appreciate any constructive participation from my peers. It has been presumed, and I emphasize the word presumed, that James Daniel of Essex Co., Virginia, was the son of Hugh and Mary Billington Daniel of Old Rappahannock Co., Va. Rappahannock County was formed in the year 1656 from Lancaster Co., Va, and became extinct in 1692 when it became two counties named Essex and Richmond Co., Va. So, if James was born about 1661 he would or could be a possible son of Hugh and have a Rappahannock tie? We call him James Daniel of Essex because he died in Essex in 1742. To my knowledge the only son attributable to Hugh and Mary would have been William who was born about 1660 and is mentioned in the records of Rappahannock County (April 18, 1661). There is no proof that this William was the William Daniel of Caroline, or that he produced any offspring. To further muddy the issue, John Daniel of York County, probably the first John of record, is presumed to be the father of James of Essex, a William, a John, and a Richard. Heinemann, who first supported Hugh Daniel as the chief progenitor of the Daniels of Rappahannock and Essex etc., changed his position when Worth Ray suggested that a John Daniel was the father of the aforementioned sons. Hugh Daniel would be a convenient place to put James because of dates and locality. [An assignment of "best guess", perhaps.] Mrs. Christine S. Gee and Dr. James Daniel of Laurens, SC, after hands on research in the area of Essex/Caroline/Lancaster Counties Va., arrived at the conclusion that James of Essex was a stand alone guy and was not the son of Hugh or a John of York. I support this position for the reasons stated on my web site. (www.paynedaniel.com)This would place James (James the First of Essex) as the father of William, (William Daniel of Caroline), and John born C 1687, an assignment supported by Judge Newman, and James Daniel II (1680-1725) who fits a missing link in the lineage lineup There is no record of a Richard in this scenario or the presumption that John of York was the father of James, William, John and Richard. I would love to know about this Richard? It is also presumed that Roger Daniell of Warwick County, Va., located 40 miles or so from Rappahannock, was the father of Hugh Daniel and of John Daniell of York as well. Do we have factual documentation for these assignments or do we accept past researchers work as gospel? No, but they are our only guide line to the past and we must consider that Heinemann did have a list of sources even though he did not connect all the dots for us. Mr. Ray also left us enough material to jump start the research process, but his dots do not always factually connect. Factor in the loss of records from the area of Essex and Caroline, and we are left to make the best of what we have and what we can find. And now DNA will enter the picture to begin a new era in making positive assignments, perhaps. Good hunting in 2004. Payne

    3. Good Morning, I was bouncing around the GEDCOM of a MARSHALL family of Panola County, MS and this MARSHALL family seems to have tied into one of my main families. In this GEDCOM I found a link to a Frances DANIEL(s) and a William H. THWEATT of Williamson,TN. According to this GEDCOM, this Frances DANIELS was a descendant of a Harwood DANIELS. Does anyone know this family? The specific person in this MARSHALL family I am interested in is a Charles Sims MARSHALL (b. ABT 1860) who married Anne Elizabeth WILLIAMS (1868-1958), the widow of Robert Aborn HALL, Sr (ABT 1860-1894), sometime after 1894 when Robert HALL died in Meridian. Anne Elizabeth WILLIAMS was the d/o of Samuel S. WILLIAMS and Frances D. RICHTER of Meridian, Lauderdale County, MS. Frances was my grand aunt and her younger brother, John C. RICHTER of Madison, GA married Alice E. DANIEL in 1872. Anne E. WILLIAMS's daughter, Ann White HALL b. ABT 1895, according to the wedding invitation we have, married Edmund Starkey GILES on the 25th of March in Meridian at the First Presbyterian Church, year not listed. Maybe some of these names will jog the memory of some of you as relates to these families. John R. Clarke Thomasville, GA

    1. Re: [DANIEL-L] Edgefield, SC List Posting- Raiford Connections
    2. John R. Clarke
    3. Diane, Yes and Yes -- Revolutionary War hero(s) Both John RAIFORD and his wife, Lucy SPELL, were both RW heroes. So, what you surmise may be true. There is an awful lot going on in Burke, Jefferson and Washington County, GA that I do not have a good handle on, primarily because there are few if any civil records existing from these three counties before the end of the CW. So, what we have is a lot of convolution and commingling of various families that would not be the case if we had those records. However, we do not and we have to work with the little tid bits we get here and there. However, these tid bits are sometimes confusing and makes what we do know about these makes -- make little if any sense. It is almost like trying to put together a puzzle that has lots of missing pieces. Sure, we can look at the remaining holes on the board and try to figure out "what will go into where" but I am afraid the smart play is to find the missing pieces, sooner. However, in doing so, we will be up against the research of those persons who have been beating square pegs in round holes for the past 25 years and their puzzle board is nothing but a bunch of broken, bent and misshaped pieces and the picture on the board looks like the face of the monster in the Frankenstein movies. We are getting there and this is why I keep repeating, over and over again, the answers we are seeking are probably not in what we already know about various branches of the DANIEL family but what we do not know about the other families around them. The reason this is doubly important is -- researchers have created genealogy for their own lines, as in the puzzle example mentioned, previously, but they have a hard time sustaining that genealogy across several different families. Also, by knowing these families, you will gain a better understanding of your own family. My general thoughts about these families is -- any family migrating into GA first passed through Richmond County, GA and then spread out into Burke, later Washington and Jefferson County. Also, you can go down through the early censuses for these counties and you see one big trend -- they came, originally, from NC of SC and not, VA. The VA folks settled a little further north than Burke, Jefferson and Washington County, Ga. The VA folks settled primarily in Wilkes, Oglethorpe, Greene and Hancock Counties. Counties located between these two areas, like Baldwin, Jasper and Putnam kind of are a mixture of both geographical sets. Early GA families (before the RW) were located primarily along the Savannah River basin, from Savannah to Augusta. One of the hotspots, early, for VA families was Columbia County, GA and anytime you see that county mentioned then you can rest assured they probably had later links to one of the other VA counties. Effingham County, GA, another early county, was a NC driven county. However, by 1850 these different geographical sets are merging together and you do not see the stark contrast in where they came from that you saw, earlier. Also remember, that folks moved, generally west, and if they started out in Burke, they probably headed west into the counties north of Macon in the coming years. If they started out in Hancock, they generally headed west towards the Columbus, GA area and then on into AL. Look at the O'DANIELS of Hancock County, GA -- they headed to Russell County, AL, which is just across the Chattahoochee River from Columbus. Also, VA folks from Wilkes, Oglethorpe and Greene Counties who later moved west, generally moved into such counties as Pike, Heard, Troup, etc. in later years. Families that were in some of the southern most counties, like Emanuel or Bulloch County, GA, generally headed south into the south GA or crossed over into FL, like Lucy Gray's DANIEL bunch. Sure, I am playing the odds but when I do not have the facts, I play the best match that I can that seems to match the facts that I do have. This is also not to say that some families bounced all over the place, they did. John R. 1. RE: [DANIEL-L] Edgefield, SC List Posting- Raiford Connections
    2. Diane Carrington Bradford
    3. John, You may remember that I have a 3rd gr grandfather named George MASON (c 1760-1843) who married a Sarah LNU before 1796. George MASON first appeared in the Washington County, Georgia land records in 1797 when he purchased 180 acres of land, which was partly in Washington County and partly in Montgomery County. George MASON and Sarah had six known children, 4 boys and 2 girls: 1. James MASON (c 1796-1829) m Nancy Jane HICKS bef 1820 2. **Raiford** MASON (c 1798-?) never married 3. Henry MASON (c 1801-1867) m Elizabeth CULPEPPER Jan 14, 1828 4. Mary "Polly" MASON (c 1807-?) m Daniel RICKS Apr 24, 1828 5. Elizabeth "Betsy" MASON (1810-?) m Judge Jethro ARLINE Jul 26, 1827 6. John F, MASON (1811-1848) m Nancy Ann DANIEL Jan 3, 1842 [d/o Joseph DANIEL and Temperance Ann LEE, d/o of Sampson LEE] So, John, Robert, anyone on the list-----my question is..... Does anyone show a RAIFORD connection to a MASON line in VA, NC, SC, anywhere? Could Sarah LNU have been a Sarah RAIFORD, hence giving their 2nd son Sarah's maiden name or perhaps her father's full name but extant records only show the RAIFORD part????? (If they followed the standard naming patterns of their day, then George MASON's father would have been a James MASON, and the second son would have been named for Sarah's father---a RAIFORD perhaps???) Another possibility, of course, is that George and Sarah MASON named him Raiford in honor of someone, perhaps Lt. John RAIFORD? Was he a Rev War hero whom people in that era would honor by naming their sons for him? Thoughts, please? 3. Robert, It sure smells like "what I have" for the family of William Martin BUSH RS-NC and Penelope LANE of Jones County, NC . Notice the Penelope LANE in this family and remember that a Penelope LANE (1773-1846) is a name long rumored to my the name of the wife of my Robert C. DANIEL (ABT 1765-AFT 1830) of Burke County, NC. However, it is not that bit of information that caught my attention. It was the RAIFORD information (below), as relates to these RAIFORD boys seeking their share of the Estate of John RAIFORD. That really caught my attention. LT. John RAIFORD RS-NC (ABT 1758-1812) of New Bern, Craven County, NC married Lucy Rebecca SPELL, d/o Joseph. John died in Jefferson County, GA. His kids are all over the MARSHALLS, who in turn seem to be close to my DANIEL bunch since they are on wills, together. Notice also, the BUSHES and BRYANS are all over each other and guess where they also came from -- New Bern, Craven County, NC. Another interesting name in this list is CROOM. I have an Eli McCROAN listed on several very important DANIEL deeds in Jefferson County, GA and I do not know who he was. Regardless, MAJ John CROOM (1722-1791) of Lenoir County, NC married Susannah HARDEE, d/o Col. John H. HARDEE and Susannah TYSON of Greenville, Pitt County, NC. Susannah was the d/o Samuel TYSON of Beth County, NC. Do you want me to tell you how far Greenville is from Pactolus, Pitt County, NC? About a sand wedge -- on a good day. What I am seeing in a lot of this is -- they are marrying class and not as much family but all of these families were close, I'm sure. Notice the name, Phillip RAIFORD, in the chillen of LT. John RAIFORD and the Lucy Rebecca SPELL. I think it is all the same bunch as your RAIFORDS over in Edgefield, SC..... --- JC <<< Reported children of Col. If you are interested in contacting him send me your e-mail address and I'll send you his US mail address. But thankfully he is fully recovered and we are now as busy as ever. We conduct HYMNSINGS all over America and this spring will be in the South. We would like to go to some places to research records and see cemeteries etc. Both families of my forebearers have roots in Tatnall Co. Ga. and Randolph Co. Alabama. The Lovvorns and Daniels. I know some of them are buried in the Daniel Cemetery in Randolph Co. but I don't have a clue as to where that is in the county. As I have kept up with the Roots list there doesn't seem to be anyone else with your vast store of knowledge. I am interested in finding birth, marriage and death records and we could visit whatever Courthouses etc. where this information would be available. Any direction you can give me would be much appreciated. Marjorie Ferrin ----- Original Message ----- From: John R.
