Morning John, this info is very helpful, thanks. I have found another date of marriage but I am checking that out before I change anything. We may have a child "born before marriage" situation here? Hi- I would look real closely at the Woodson-DANIELS because the NAPIERS are either tied are close to the WOODSONS, WATKINS, FITZPATRICKS, PERRINES, etc out of Goochland, Fluvanna, New Kent and Cumberland County, VA area. This is part of the Roger DANIELL line. John R. Clarke Thomasville, GA ----- Original Message ----- From: "M.M. My Daniel line starts in VA with John Daniel b: ca 1769, VA. He died in Ky ca 1840. In 1810 John and Catherine are in Lee County,VA and some of their sons are on the tax rolls in Knox Co., Kentucky. I have this line down from John and Catherine but I have no idea who John's parents or siblings were or which county he was born in. Most researchers for this family line use the Daniel name with the 'S' although I have never seen it in any census or land records with the 'S'. Then from my Guthrie line, I find a few Daniel and Guthrie links that go along with what Mike Daniel wrote: ......I can confuse this further. My Daniel line starts in VA with John Daniel b: ca 1769, VA. He died in Ky ca 1840. John married Catherine NAPIER, who was born in 1772 in Franklin Co.,VA Can anyone link this John Daniel to the Middlesex bunch? Or can anyone tell me which family line this John Daniel is from ?. John, I have a date of marriage of Zach and Alley Dubberly Daniel as 8 Sep. 1836. Is that correct if James H. Daniel was born in 1832? I can confuse this further. When Thomas Daniel of Green County, GA gave power of attorney for his land to Ruben Guthrie in Madison County, KY ca 1795, my ancestor, Thomas Daniel was living in that county and left immediately for Clark County. When Thomas Daniel of Greene County, GA gave power of attorney for his land in Montgomery County, KY to Enoch Smith in 1809, my Thomas Daniel had departed Montgomery County for Illinois a couple of years earlier. Enoch Smith was tied into the Loudoun County, VA bunch which my Thomas' son, Estridge, married into when he married Mary Fox in 1805. Land that Estridge owned was bounded by land of a Thomas Daniel, but I have never been able to find out which Thomas as there is no deed for this land under the name of Thomas Daniel in any of these Kentucky counties. In Illinois, a county history says my family came to Illinois from Georgia, but I have never been able to find anything to support this. It looks, however, as if my family came from the Essex bunch, as they used the name Walker and there is a DNA match to William Daniel who married Verlinda Simmons. Fun. Kevin John R. Diane, I found your contribution to the List quite helpful in my better understanding of the Thomas Daniel family. I am not too concerned about the spellings of the last name as long as the right person is identified. We need to determine if Mary Daniel FAUCHE was the daughter of Thomas and it appears that way since she died before he did. [Augusta [GA] 7 September 1805 - "Died on Friday, the 30th ult., at her father's the Rev. Thomas DANIEL, in Green County, Mrs. Mary FAUCHE...."] So who was FAUCHE, Jonas? I fully agree with Mike's position that the financial wherewithal of the Rev. Tom. was more than adequate for the period. Mike, we do have a dilimia. Was Martha's dad Major John or Thomas Smith SCREVEN, Jr.? I am not well versed enough on the Screven family to help on that quandary. This is John's contribution [ MAJ John SCREVEN, Jr. (1777-1830) married twice. Martha's mother was his first wife, I think, Hannah PROCTOR whom he married in 1797. He married, second, her sister, Sarah PROCTOR, in 1803.] ?????? In regard to the O'Daniel/Daniell/Daniel bunch, I follow Robert Daniel's documentation of these various individuals such as William O'Daniel and James Daniell. The research for this family is sound and well researched. Good Morning, This BIO of James H. DANIEL of Millen, Jenkins County, GA was recently posted to the Burke County, GA GENWEB website. It is attached, below. Some say that James H. DANIEL married a Mary HENDRICKS but that is not the case, unless HENDRICKS was her married name.. They also state in this BIO he was born in 1831 and not the 1832 date often listed for him. James Hiram DANIEL was a son of Zachariah DANIEL and Alia DUBBERYL and a grandson of Aaron DANIEL, Jr. and Mary STANALAND, according to my information, which seems to be partly confirmed by this BIO. I also know this DANIEL family owned a large, fancy hotel in Millen, at some point. I also know that some of my DANIEL family members (TARVER descendants) were buried in the same cemetery in Millen where this DANIEL was buried, but I do not know if they were connected or not. These TARVERS and these DANIELS also seem to have been associated with the railroad and my direct bunch in Jefferson County, GA were also associated with the GA Railroad. I also know the PALMER family of Burke County, GA were closely associated with my DANIEL bunch in Burke and the mercantile business is a common link to my family in Madison, GA, also in the mercantile business. We need to straighten out this DANIEL family is the will of Aaron DANIEL, Sr. or his wife, Betsy WHITFIELD. Or, at the very least lay our hands on some document that outlines, specifically, the children of this DANIEL family. <<< Author: Author Unknown - Taken from Memoirs of Ga., Vol II Memoirs of Georgia, Vol. II, Atlanta, Ga., pages 824-825 Published by the Southern Historical Association in 1895 J.H. He also established a general mercantile business in 1876, which has seen been continued. He is a partner in the firm of Daniel Sons & Palmer, and owns large farming interests in both Burke and Screven Counties. Mr. Daniel has about 20,000 acres of land, a large number being in cultivation, in tilling which he runs about 130 plows; his cotton production being about 1,500 bales annually. Mike, Well, I see we are back to Joseph WILLIAMS aren't we? Old Jo was not "po folks" and any link between Thomas DANIEL of Greene County, GA to Old Joe puts Thomas DANIEL in a completely different DANIEL family in my opinion. We know the Kelso-Daniel bunch migrated from PE to Greene County, GA and the adjacent county to PE was Granville County, NC, were Joseph WILLIAMS was from. We also know this Kelso-Daniel bunch is all over the COFFEES, as are the CUNNINGHAMS, and as was Thomas DANIEL of Greene County, GA. Also, how does one reconcile the KY property you list for this Thomas when he was supposedly from Halifax County, NC? It does not match. Something else is going on, here, and I have often considered the possibility that Thomas DANIEL of Greene County, GA was a Middlesex DANIEL but he could be out of that Kelso-Daniel bunch from VA. I do not know but my guess is -- he was a VA DANIEL. Like the old saying for adopted kids, "you feed 'em long enough and they start to look like you." Robert, As you know, there is big difference in how a family spelled their names in family related legal documents and how clerks, census takers and other folks spelled their name. <grin> We even see spellings like, McDANIEL and McDONALD, used for the spelling of this O'DANIEL family in civil records, don't we? Unlike some who seem to put a lot of stock in how a certain family spelled their name or did not spell their name, most family names went through a rather complex metamorphosis and this would generally continue up until about the end of the 19th Century. I think the key to when a particular spelling went into general use by some families was when that family put down roots and were no longer moving all over the place. This is because the key source for the spelling of a family's name were all of those family tomb stones they usually saw each Sunday when they went to church, since their ancestors were usually buried in their church's cemetery or in family cemeteries on the "home place". Until this generational continuity begin to occur, the spelling of a family's name would often continue to evolve as they moved from hither to yon, especially if they were escaping creditors and maybe a rather dubious past. <grin> In the better educated and more affluent families, this was seldom was a problem because these families were usually very proud of their family's heritage, as well as the spelling of their family name. Also, since these families tended to put down roots much sooner, than less affluent and educated families, the exact spelling of their names was usually locked in much sooner. Since your family was generally better educated, they knew the difference between these various spellings and once they locked in to a particular spelling, they stuck with it, didn't they? Not to mention all of the local newspapers who generally printed their names in legal documents and newsworthy items, at a much higher incidence than less affluent and educated families. There is nothing like "reinforcement" to keep the spelling of a family's name on the straight and narrow. Also, if you want to make some families really mad, just misspell their name in a newspaper article. I am also sure this was the case, then, as well, as now. Other factors that contributed to the spelling of a family's name was -- the published spelling of the name of famous relatives or even the spelling of the name of famous people. Just put a person's name in a history book or newspaper and you will be surprised how many families adopt that spelling of their family name. There are countless members of the PEARCE and PEIRCE families who later spelled their name, PIERCE, strictly because of the often published spelling of the name of President Franklin PIERCE. LEE is another example, because I am quite sure more than a few LEA's and LEAH's later adopted the spelling, LEE, especially after the ride to glory of Gen. Robert E. LEE during the CW. KEY and KEA are other examples because everybody wanted to be related to Francis Scott KEY. <grin> I guess one could say, there is nothing like a little "vicarious glory" to lock in the spelling of a family's name. In fact, I guess that is why we are all beating the bushes trying to find out a little bit more about our ancestors, so we can have a little bit more of that "vicarious glory." <grin> If you want to see someone stop searching for information on their ancestors, just let them find out that one of their ancestors was hung as a horse thief, was a convicted felon or was of mixed race descent. However, if they should discover they "may be" related to some famous personage, their research takes on a who new impetus, no matter how nebulous the link may be. <grin> John R. John, I think perhaps you underestimate the financial wherewithal of the Rev. Tom. The very informative source posted by Diane states " Thomas DANIELL owned large tracts of land in Greene, Wilkes, Washington and Wilkerson Counties in Georgia and also large tracts of land in Kentucky." I am aware through recorded deeds of many of his holdings in Ga. including an 810 acre "gift" from Joseph WILLIAMS to "my friend" Thomas DANIELL in Franklin Cty., GA. in 1791. This was not a poor itinerant preacher and if his daughter Mary was indeed married to Jonas Fauche the family's social and political status weren't lacking in any respects I can immediately see. Mike Daniel
John, In trying to keep the name change from O'DANIEL to DANIEL and DANIELL straight, the following appears to be the true in the lines of William of Stafford's three sons: The William O'DANIEL family of Kershaw uses the DANIEL spelling rather than the LL. Only one document has surfaced with William's son, William III, b. 1755, using the DANIELL spelling, that in 1802. In all others, when not O'DANIEL, DANIEL prevails, as in William III's LW&T of 1828. The DANIELL spelling is used by James O'DANIEL, 1721-1798, and his descendants. The last record found of James using O'DANIEL, is the deed of sale August 16, 1757 of 100 acres of land in Fairfax Co., VA, inherited from his father to Rev. Charles GREEN. This is the document that proves he is the James DANIELL of SC because the document initially identifies the seller as James O'DANIEL of the Province of South Carolina and shows the acknowledgment of sale as by James DANIELL, in four places. Just to keep things confusing though, records pertaining to James' line are also found using the single L. The family line of the third brother, John O'DANIEL of Fairfax, VA uses DANIEL. The LL spelling has not been found been found in his line. Hope this helps. Robert ----- Original Message ----- From: "John R. Diane, We have seen all of this before. Queries in genealogical magazines, regardless of when they were written, are just another piece of information. All too many times that query was also built on information that is either misleading, at best, or patently incorrect. If the person actually knew -- they would not be asking, would they? They would also provide the necessary sources for the assignments they list in their query, wouldn't they? That, is what we need because, as my mother once said, the proof is in the pudding. The problem that I see with Thomas DANIEL and Sarah BURNEY is they do not have the financial resources to meet the profiles of their grandchildren -- those boys were high steppers. They also could not have gotten it all from Charles because he died much too young to accumulate much wealth and property. Sure, they could have gotten it from the COFFEES but usually grandfathers do not leave money to their grandchildren but to their daughters and sons. I do not know what the answer is on this bunch but I need to see a lot more money and property in this family than what I am seeing now, in order to sustain the subsequent life styles and professions of both WCD and SCD. These boys were high rollers and money begets money, so where did it come from? John R. Here is an item I recently found in the GEORGIA GENEALOGICAL MAGAZINE, No. 91, Winter 1984 that appears to support Mike's first two newspaper items. This item was a query posted for additional info on Thomas DANIEL, so some of it will be a repeat of what Listers researching this family may already know, but there is also some additional info that I think Listers might find interesting; I am posting only the pertinent content of the query. The submitter used both the single "L" and double "L" spellings of DANIEL in this query, but mostly the DANIELL spelling. I added the all-caps surnames per the convention used on the Daniel-L,........ AND I QUOTE: "...[Thomas DANIEL] was a resident of Greene County, GA., having died there in 1813; his wife, Sarah Burney DANIELL [sic], died there in 1815 or 16. They had three children, two sons and a daughter; their sons were: William and Charles; the daughter Nancy, who married an Eden Coleman. William married Mary King and Charles married Elizabeth Coffee, daughter of Peter Coffee and Sarah Smith. "Thomas in his will names his wife, Sarah, and daughter, Nancy; he made bequests to the following named grandchildren: Charles William DANIEL, son of Wm. DANIELL, decsd., John K. DANIELL, Polly DANIELL, Sally B. DANIELL, Maria DANIELL, Harriett Ann DANIELL, and his daughter-in-law, Mary King, widow of William DANIELL, decsd. Thomas DANIELL owned large tracts of land in Greene, Wilkes, Washington and Wilkerson Counties in Georgia and also large tracts of land in Kentucky. "Thomas DANIELL's son, Charles, died in Greene County while clearing some of his land; a tree fell on him; he left a widow; Elizabeth (Betsy) Coffee, and three children, two sons and a daughter; the sons names were: William Coffee Daniell, who later became a doctor and was also mayor of Savannah, Ga.; his other son, Smith Coffee DANIELL, who was an Indian fighter of some fame and later became a rather large land holder in Miss., his home being in Claiborne County, the daughter's name was Sophia "Tinsy" DANIELL. "...I would also like to know where Benjamin Richard DANIELL, who died Natchitoches, La., Sept/. 22, 1867, is buried;; he was the first son of Dr. Wm. C. DANIELL and Martha SCREVEN of Savannah, Ga." END QUOTE The conclusions one might draw from comparing the newspaper death notice for the OTHER daughter and the info in the query include: 1. Mary Daniel FAUCHE never had any children or they would have been listed in Thomas DANIELL's will with his other grandchildren. 2. For the same reason, there was no need for Thomas DANIELL to mention his deceased daughter in his will, so researchers always assumed Thomas and Sarah (Burney) DANIELL had only three children. Another conclusion one might reach concerns the Methodist minister wrongly convicted of murder and John Clarke's theory that it was William Coffee Daniel who spoke for the minister's innocence to the Georgia General Assembly: 3. As mayor, Dr. William Coffee DANIELL and Martha SCREVEN were among the social and political leaders of Savannah, Ga. So, yes, John, it is virtually certain that the Wm. C. Daniel who addressed the Georgia General Assembly on behalf of the convicted Methodist minister was, indeed, Dr. William Coffee DANIELL, mayor (or former mayor) of Savannah. Who else would have had the clout to be placed on the Assembly's agenda on behalf of a convicted murderer, and who else could have hoped that his credentials and connections were extensive enough and important enough to possibly persuade the General Assembly of the innocence of the convicted Methodist minister? -----Original Message----- From: Runforf471@aol.com [mailto:Runforf471@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, January 15, 2004 10:04 AM To: DANIEL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [DANIEL-L] Daniel SC & GA Newspaper items Augusta [GA] 7 September 1805 - "Died on Friday, the 30th ult., at her father's the Rev. Mrs. Martha DANIELL, daughter of the late Major John SCREVEN, and wife of Dr. W.C. DANIELL of that place, aged 32 years." If Major John was Martha's Dad my files on that family are scrogged up.
Mike, I know a little bit about Cokesbury. It was located over near Edgefield, SC. It was not like what we think of, today, as a seminary or even an institution of higher learning, like the Methodists established at Oxford in Newton County, GA or Oglethorpe University, established by the Presbyterians in Milledgeville, GA. From what I have read about it -- Cokesbury was kind of like Berry College in Rome used to be, where one worked and went through some type of Methodist ministerial training program at the same time. I am glad you brought this up because there is a Thomas WILLIAMS, the son of Joseph WILLIAMS, Sr. (ABT 1755-1812) of Surry County, NC who married Rebecca LANIER, d/o Thomas LANIER and Elizabeth HICKS of Granville County, NC. I only have the marriage information for two of their children, a Rebecca and Fannie WILLIAMS but they both married the same person, a John P. ERWIN - no other details on him. ERWIN is a name I watch closely but I do have Joseph WILLIAMS's will and it is copied, below. What caught my eye on this was the SPEER and ERWIN links to this family. I have both, either collateral (ERWIN) or close (SPEIR) to my bunch in Burke and Jefferson County, GA. <<<< Surry Co. NC Will Abstracts - Book 4:1. 28 Jan 1812. Will of Joseph Williams.
