    3. List: may I echo Mike's recommendation of the American Memory project at LOC. When I mentioned some time back the Washington Manuscripts, I thought there were only a few. I was mistaken. Images of most that are readable are there, plus transcriptions of others. Some date back to his surveyor days. Very interesting letters and other papers. It will take weeks to read them all, but worth the time. 1. [DANIEL-L] Re: Robert C. DANIEL Family of Burke County, GA
    2. John R. Clarke
    3. Jim, There is still something missing here. I can understand the Craven County, NC WISE connection but when you go back through their family and their WADSWORTHS, it does not make a lot of sense. Notice that Hugh Buckner JOHNSTON did not have a name for all of the DANIEL kids that I know of - only two out of ten and I do not have Chesley on my list. I do have James (1814-1857) and William (b. 1797), as well as Nancy (1799-1862) and Sarah (1804-1872) and I know who they married -- WISE boys, children of John WYSE and Nancy WADSWORTH of Craven County, NC. I also know that Nancy and Sarah DANIEL were siblings of Robert W. DANIEL (1809-1865) of Jefferson County, GA but this does not tie it all together. Something is missing. It makes some sense but not completely. However, do notice, these DANIEL kids have life spans about what I have always said about my bunch -- they had lives "shorter than most." (boys, 50-60 and girls a little longer.), so that part matches. I also feel there has to be some family connection to the RENEAUS because Mary Jane RENEAU (1830-1912), being the daughter of a preacher, probably came with hat in hand and when that happens, it often means, family of some variety. She was nice looking but she was no Miss America - a little too short and dumpy for my tastes. <grin> . We also know where the RENEAUS were from and where they point back to -- Upper Neck and Augusta County areas of VA and southern PA and MD. We also know the WYSE bunch migrated through MD on the way to Craven County, NC. In fact, John WYSE's daddy, Ninean WYSE died in Oxford, Talbot County, MD. I have family links all over that area. As I look at this bunch one would think they were probably part of the DANIEL bunch out of IOW County, VA and they may well be but I think not. I think they were part of a DANIEL family that migrated from Ireland, Scotland, England or even New England to MD, NJ or the Upper Areas of VA in the 1750 time frame and then moved south after the war. They well could have been a VA or even SC family that moved north out of the tide water areas of VA and SC and later moved south into NC and GA. I really like the smell of families around Spotsylvania and Orange County, VA for some reason. . One of the families tied to Smith Callaway BANKS, my good friend of Statesboro, GA, were in the foundry business during the RW in Reading, PA and his bunch is tied to mine, later. We also know the Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg areas of VA were big time foundry areas. That's why all of the old growth timber had been cut down in the area of the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864 - it had been used in the foundry business prevalent in that area in earlier years.. We also know the CALLAWAYS were from MD and they are tied to my bunch through the FITZPATRICKS, a Goochland and Cumberland area family. The problem with my bunch is they came from an area devastated by war (wherever) and moved into an area devastated by war (Burke and Jefferson County, GA) which is why we do not know who they were or where they came from. However, they came to Burke County, GA in 1812 with some amount of money and breeding and none of their children match the profile of the more or less standard, $300/$600 a year family. This bunch, at adulthood, was a $5,000 a year bunch. They also seem to have married often but married, well. Don't worry, I will figure it out with the help of Payne, you and a few others..... <grin> John R. Clarke [mailto:jclarke@rose.net] Sent: Wednesday, February 18, 2004 8:52 AM To: GAJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Robert C. DANIEL Family of Burke County, GA Good Morning, Well, we have finally figured out where they came from -- Greene County, NC. We also know who the WISE/WYSE family that was connected to them came from - Craven County, NC, the children of John WYSE and Nancy WADSWORTH who migrated to Craven County, NC from Maryland and before that, Scotland. The following information is from the miscellaneous notes of Hugh Buckner JOHNSTON that are in the Raleigh Library, Raleigh, Wake County, NC: JOHNSTON's notes are generally considered as being reliable. Several comments on these notes: 1. The Chesley DANIEL listed in this information is the Chesley C. DANIEL born ABT 1818, probably in Burke County, GA since RCD and Penelope moved to Burke in 1812. He married an Ann LNU ABT 1837 and I think later lived in Washington County, GA. 2. The Nancy DANIEL listed in this information married a Richard ERWIN/IRWIN/IRVIN, first (ABT 1820), and after he died (Bef 31 Mar 1827) she married Frederick W. WISE/WYSE. The W. is probably for WADSWORTH, his mother's maiden name. 3. We do not know what the C. stood for in Robert C. DANIEL's name, but maybe Chesley. We know the WYSE family was originally from Maryland before migrating to Craven County, NC. However, since Chesley C. DANIEL also had the middle initial C. we really do not know what it stood for and it could have stood for something else. COUNCIL and CASON are other real possibilities for this middle name. 4. I can confirm from the 1861 Will of Ann DANIEL (1809-1861), the second wife of James L. DANIEL (1814-1857) of Bethany, GA, who was listed as a son of Robert and Penelope in these notes, that Sarah Elizabeth DANIEL (1807-1872) was a sister of Robert W. DANIEL (1809-1865) of Bethany, Jefferson County, GA. I think this Sarah DANIEL and Thomas WYSE lived in Tattnall County, GA. Regardless, two of her sons were living with Robert W. DANIEL and his family in Bethany, GA in 1860 and are so enumerated with him on the 1860 census. The 1862 will of Counsel D. WISE, a son of Sarah and Thomas WISE, executed by Robert W. DANIEL, also confirms this sibling relationship since Robert was listed in his will as his uncle. 5. Chesley Simon WISE was born in 1845 and served in Company G (E), 38th GA VIR, ANV during the CW. He enlisted on November 24, 1861 as a PVT, was wounded at 2nd Manassas on August 28, 1862 and discharged in March 1863. His whereabouts after then are unknown as are the whereabouts of his brother, Counsel D. WISE. . Any information on this bunch is appreciated..... <<< R. C. Daniel of Greene County, North Carolina, married Penelope and had: James Daniel, William Daniel, Chesley Daniel, Nancy Daniel married on February 13, 1834, Frederick W. Wyse, son of John Wyse and Nancy Wadsworth. He was born on September 5, 1798. Sarah Elizabeth Daniel was born on February 25, 1807, in Greene County North Carolina. and died on May 22, 1872; on January 25 1827, she married Thomas Wise, fifth son of John Wyse and wife Nancy Wadsworth. He was born on October 12, 1799, and died on February 22, 1849. Also there was a Chesley Simeon Wise. >>> John R. 3. Allen WASHINGTON, Sorry it took me so long to get around to your 26 Sep 2003 message but it was in a group of messages I never finished with last summer. My guess is your Elizabeth DANIEL if she was a DANIEL was a child of Chesley C. DANIEL and his wife, Anne. Recent information tends to say that Chesley was a younger brother of my Robert W. DANIEL of Jefferson County, GA. I do know that Chesley signed his 1841 marriage bond in Richmond County, GA which seems to show that Chesley was in some way related to Bobby. How, and whether he was actually a sibling, I do not know. What I do know is that Robert C. DANIEL disappears from the 1840 Burke County, GA census and Chesley shows up in almost the same position. The name, Chesely, in your GAY bunch may also indicated there was some relationship to your Elizabeth DANIEL born ABT 1851. I am going to post all of the people around Chesley C. DANIEL in 1850 so you can see who they were. Maybe you will see a familiar name. One word on the Nancy WISE listed near Chesley. She was Nancy DANIEL (1799-1862) who married an ERWIN, first, and Frederick Wadsworth WISE or WYSE, second. So, that Nancy was his sister. And, most of those other folks were related to the DANIELS in one way or another. <<< 1850 Burke County, GA census: Two houses down from Chesley DANIEL 3 217 217 Tarver Allen 40 M . Farmer . 3. Payne, One of the families that bang into this bunch in Burke County, GA is the KENT family of Craven County, NC and they ended up in Lousyanna, later. They descend from a Thomas KENT (1730-1781) and UNK of Talbot County, MD that migrated to New Bern, Craven County, NC. Their son, Levi KENT married Keziah WADSWORTH, sister of the Nancy WADSWORTH who married John WYSE. The WADSWORTHS were also of Maryland before migrating to Craven County, NC.. As you know, I bounce through people's GEDCOMS that have known family links. In this case the WISE/WYSE bunch. Doing so, I picked up several interesting links in that bunch tied to the DANIELS. One of these was the link of Cornelius CARGILL, Sr. of Cornwall, Lunenburg Co., VA who married Elizabeth DANIELL, d/o John DANIELL, III (1672-1724) and Ann BATES of York County, VA. The other was a link to Phoebe DANIEL, d/o William DANIEL, Sr. and Sarah WILLIAMS who married a Thomas JACKSON of Orange County, VA in 1720. His sister, Sarah JACKSON married William TINSLEY II (ABT 1645-1716) of St. Anne Parish, Essex Co., VA. His parents were Thomas TINSLEY I and Elizabeth RANDOLPH, d/o Sir John of Yorkshire, ENGLAND. From some of the names I saw in this bunch, either of these would smell right for this later DANIEL bunch in either NC or Burke County, GA...... I did look at the KENT information that is available and they tie into the ALBRITTON family - probably the York County, VA bunch tied to the CASONS. I could not get any firm connections but the name pattern looks the same as the bunch that married into the KENTS. I will keep diggin. <grin> John R. The DEW children married into the WISE, PERRITT, HAYES and LANE families. That PERRITT may be part of the John PERRY I see later listed on census and wills of this bunch and the LANE family may also be tied to the Penelope LANE (1773-1846) that some say was the wife of Robert C. DANIEL (ABT 1765-AFT 1830). Thomas WISE may also be the Thomas C. WISE that married Sarah Elizabeth DANIEL (1807-1872), as probably his second wife. The LANE listed in this GEDCOM was a Bryant LANE born ABT 1800 but they did not include other details about this LANE. John R. Clarke Thomasville, GA

    3. John, I have been looking into your quest for the roots of Robert C. Daniel + Penelope Lane of Burke County, Georgia. I found the following tid-bits in the Notes of Hugh Buckner Johnston or a collection of miscellaneous notes on the Daniel family. >>From the Miscellaneous Notes of Hugh Buckner Johnston, Raleigh Reading Room. Vertical File.<< R. C. Daniel of Greene County, North Carolina, married Penelope and had: James Daniel, William Daniel, Chestly Daniel, Nancy Daniel married on February 13, 1834, Frederick W. Wyse, son of John Wyse and Nancy Wadsworth. He was born on September 5, 1798. [notice the name Chestly, could be Robert's middle name as well?] Sarah Elizabeth Daniel was born on February 25, 1807, in Greene County North Carolina. and died on May 22, 1872; on January 25 1827, she married Thomas Wise, fifth son of John Wyse and wife Nancy Wadsworth. He was born on October 12, 1799, and died on Fenruary 22, 1849. [notice a different father for Thomas and his brother Frederick who married Nancy Daniel] Also there was a Chesley Simeon Wise. No smokeing guns here but this does put R. C's. family in Greene County, NC. While without documentation, the notes of Mr. Johsnton usually prove correct. Chew away, Payne Michael Jordon said. "Loseing a game is the best way to appreciate winning". Go DUKE! Err., it might have been Magic Johnson?

    3. Robert, Two names caught my attention on this list, besides what I listed in my private message to you. They are REESE and HAYNES. My grandparents, Alice DANIEL (1854-1924) and John RICHTER (1848-1907) lived in Reese Community, Morgan County, GA. This community, which borders on Brownwood Community to the north and Shady Dale, Jasper County, GA to the south, was named for a REESE boy who was clerk of the court in Morgan County, GA. There are more than a few connections of the REESE name to several family deeds in Morgan County, GA. The HAYNES connection also caught my eye because William Montgomery HAYNES (1868-1902) of Hall County, GA married Lillian May McCLELLAN (1862-1911) of Marietta, Cobb County, GA in 1882. They had two children that I know of, a Montgomery HAYNES and a Marietta HAYNES. I do not know anything about the girl but Montgomery HAYNES was of Tampa, FL in 1925. I do not know if the "Montgomery" HAYNES was a junior or not. I do not know very much about the HAYNES but I know a lot about the McCLELLANS. Lillian's grandmother, Margaret POTTER (1810-1863) married Joseph John "Jesse" TATUM ABT 1836 in St. Croix, I believe, since both of their families were from St. Croix, Dutch West Indies. Margaret and Jesse migrated to Marietta, GA by 1850 and Jesse was a prominent merchant and slave trader in Marietta before the CW. Margaret's older sister, Anne Eliza POTTER (1808-1863), married Charles W. RICHTER, Sr. (1807-1884) in about the same time frame and the RICHTERS migrated to Madison, Morgan County, GA. You also know from my private note that Anne and Charles's boys went to school in Marietta and Marietta and Madison are only about 75 miles apart, as the crow flies. Anyway, Harriett Ann TATUM (1838-1925), daughter of Jesse and Margaret, married Leander Calvin McCLELLAN (1826-1883) in 1856 in Marietta, GA by a Dr. George PEETRE. They had four children, three girls and a boy who died in infancy. Their oldest daughter, Alice Josephine McCLELLAN (1858-1907) married, first, Alonzo James WHITE, Jr. Esq. (1845-1877) in 1876 in Marietta. He was out of the Blake Leah WHITE family of Charleston, SC. Alice and Alonzo had one daughter, Alonsita WHITE born 1877, after her father's death. Alonsita WHITE married a Harold WALKER of NYC in 1904. They had three daughters, Evelyn (married Lawrence Wood ROBERT), Aldace (married a DAVIES) and another daughter who married a Fielding ROBINSON, as the story goes. In 1892 after 15 years of widowhood, Alice married second, Theodore Weld BIRNEY, Esq. (1854-1897). The BIRNEYS were of Forest Glen, MD. They had two daughters -- Catherine BIRNEY born 1893 married a Baron Albrect von SCHOEN and Lillian born 1895 married an Edward R. FINKENSTAEDT of Washington, DC, according to my information. Lillian McCLELLAN was Alice's younger sister. They also had another sister, Grace Lee McCLELLAN (1864-1832) who married a James Emmett SMITH (1859-1925). I know he died in Milledgeville, Baldwin County, GA and she died in Atlanta but I do not know very many of the specific details about James and Grace's family only that they had three children (two girls and a boy) all born around 1900 -- Mary Virginia SMITH, McClellan SMITH and Ruth Birney SMITH (married Paul BEAUCHAMP of Pike County, GA in 1921). I think the SMITHS were of Nelson County, VA and James was a grandson of William SMITH (1755-1836) and Elizabeth MASSIE of Nelson County, VA. SMITH was formerly of Albemarle County, VA. These McCLELLAN kids were my 2nd cousins, once removed (2C-1R) and their mother (Harriett TATUM) my 1C 2R and her mother, my great grand aunt. John R. 3. Hi, Another comment on St. Croix, Dutch West Indies. There were lots of Norwegians living in St. Croix which was probably the source of the DANIELSONS listed in these files. My 2nd GGM was a Maria HOLLWECK born Bergan, Norway and she married Carl Wilhelm RICHTER, Sr. sometime prior to 1807. We know Carl left Reichenbach, Liegnitz, Schlesien, Prussia in 1799 but do not know his movements before he landed in St. Croix sometime ABT May 1807 when Carl, Jr. was born in St. Croix. We also have information his mother later married a kinsman, also named HOLLWECK, after Carl, Sr. died in 1807. We also know that Little Carl, who later changed his name to Charles William RICHTER, was the only child of Carl, Sr. because we have an 1833 letter in which Carl, Jr. is described by his uncle, who still lived in Reichenbach, Liegnitz, Schlesien, Prussia, as the only heir of Carl Jr.'s uncle, August RICHTER (1792-1817), an officer in the Prussian Army, who had died as a result of injuries he recieved at Battle of Waterloo in 1815. 3. Good morning, I do not remember the rather cryptic comment you attributed to me but I do remember posting that Barbados information. It was from last spring or early last summer. Did you have any particular comment to make other than the possible link to the Barzilla DANIEL that was mentioned recently? This is why it is imperative for researchers to go back through the DANIEL archives from time to time and search for information on their families because we all miss important clues from time to time. It's address is: http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=DANIEL John R. 1. Re: [DANIEL-L] Jeremiah, Basil, Barton, Martin and Robert Daniel. Kentucky Militia of 1812 , Illinois census
    2. If you check White County Illinois Census for 1818 you will also find David, Basil and Josiah Daniel. Nancy Daniel Johnson > I do not have info on Jeremiah Daniel (or Daniels) but notice that in Captain McCormack's Militia company of the Kentucky 1812 militia (found on genealogy.com history subscription, it mentions Jeremiah Daniel, Basdel Daniel, and Barton Daniel (all in a row in an non-alphabetized list). In 1818 census of Washington Co., Illinois, heads of families (again, consecutively ) include Jeremiah Daniel, Barton Daniel, Martin Daniel and Robert Daniel. In 1820 census of Bond Co. Illinois, it includes in a row in a non- alphabetized list Martin Daniel, Barton Daniel, Jeremiah Daniel, William Daniel and Delila Daniel. There is also a Robert Daniel on the same page. This puts a hint as to the family did stick together migrating from North Carolina. > > > ==== DANIEL Mailing List ==== > If you are have any problems receiving the DANIEL List, would like to change your subscription method or email address or you have a suggestion you think would improve the operation of the DANIEL list -- feel free to contact me at any time - My email address is JClarke@rose.net >

    3. Hi, This is really interesting. Israel CHRISTIAN was from Augusta County, VA and his daughter, Ann "Nancy" CHRISTIAN (1744-1782) married Col. William FLEMING of Bellmont, Roanoke County, VA. Their daughter, Elizabeth Christian FLEMING (1775-1844) married Samuel Graham RAMSEY. Samuel G. RAMSEY (1771-1817) was the younger brother of Jane RAMSEY (ABT 1765-1851) who married my 4th GGF, Rev. Thomas Means RENEAU RS-VA (1760-1840). Jane and Rev. RENEAU are buried in Blue River TWP, Harrison County, IN. Their son, Louis O. RENEAU, Esq. (1784-1863) married a Jane NORRIS, some say MORRIS but I think NORRIS is correct. Louis, an attorney, and Jane lived in the French Broad River area of Jefferson County, TN and he represented that area in the TN House. The General John SEVIER RS-VA of Augusta County, VA family is also collateral with this bunch. Thomas's brother, Rev. Francis RENEAU RS-VA married John's daughter, Lydia SEVIER. Does any of this sound familiar? <<<< Jane and Samuel Graham RAMSEY were the children of Reynolds RAMSEY RS-MD and Naomi ALEXANDER of Swan Pond, Knox County, Tennessee.
