    3. I would be interested in any connection this Reuben Daniel had with Marmaduke and Nannie. I haven't seen one as of yet? BTW John, my wife's ggrandpa Lilton Johnson moved in a covered wagon with his family from Gwinnett Co., Ga., or thereabouts, to Cleburne Co., Ala., in 1878. He was 1/2 Native American so what tribe was he likely to represent. We think Cherokee? Oh, morning all. 3. Mike, I knew they were warlike, which is what I implied. Those ROBINSON boys in Charlton County, GA were folks not to be messed with. If my grandfather was an example -- most of them spoke softly, carried a big stick and were tougher than nails. <grin> As for the DANIELS tied to some of these Indian families. My guess is a lot of them just took the name of a well-known family from the area they came from and the DANIELS were a pretty well known family of eastern NC. There was a lot of Anglicizing going on in those days. This is probably why we have a lot of different DNA strains floating around in the DANIEL family, some Irish, some English, some Scottish, some French, some German, some probably of Native American ancestry and some from only God knows where. 3. Martha, If they went on the Trail of Tears, they were probably North GA families maybe including some from south central TN and western NC. Many of the Cherokees fled into the ancestral tribal areas in the mountains of western NC and escaped being relocated. ROSS and McINTOSH are two big names in the bunch that were relocated out west, still are...... What Andy Jackson and others wanted was their land, especially after gold was found in Dahlonega, GA area in the late 1820's. I guess Old Andy thought there was a lot of gold in "them thar hills, " something they later found not to be the case. The only gold in "them thar hills," today, is the hills, themselves. The last I heard land in the Dahlonega area was going for $40,000 an acre in two acre tracks and that was close to 10 years ago. Just goes to show what a bunch of rich Yankees and GA-400 will do for an area. <grin> John R. 2. From "History of the Cherokee Indians: Old Families", by Emmet STARR, 1921 [Our library may have updates on Emmet's work, by a descendant now deceased, am planning to check.] Emmet STARR showed the marriages of Reuben DANIEL and Delilah WRIGHT, but didn't know his connection to Marmaduke DANIEL who married Nancy 'Nannie' STILL, Georgia ~ There are apparently DANIEL connections back to Stokes County, NC and also areas of Tennessee. Main names were BECK, BUFFINGTON, CAMPBELL, CRITTENDEN, Cunningham, Davis, DOWNING, FOREMAN, FIELDS, ROGERS, as in Will ROGERS ~ some McDANIELs, STARR, WALKER..... etc. One of my HENDRENs from the Stokes area married one of the BECK ladies connected to Marmaduke's families. Has anyone connected to Marmaduke DANIEL had the DNA test? Marriages of the children of Reuben DANIEL and Delilah WRIGHT are the same, with the exception of child number seven and who she married. 1. Sarah 'Sallie' DANIEL married John SHEPHERD, no issues. 2. James W. DANIEL married Catherine WOFFORD 3. Caroline DANIEL married Smith THORNTON 4. Carter DANIEL married Catherine BENGE 5. 1. Re: [DANIEL-L] DANIELs on Indian census

    3. Martha, My guess on these "Cherokees" you list is -- they were actually eastern NC Tuscaroras that were relocated by the US Government into Western NY and PA in the early 1800's and found their way back down south, later. The Cherokees were only located in NC, SC, GA and TN, not Delaware and Canada. . The Tuscaroras were primarily located in eastern NC, Duplin, Pitt and Onslow areas. They were quite unlike the Lumbecs who lived along the NC-SC border, who some say were a little "slow on the draw." The Tuscaroras were not slow at anything, as I understand it. I think this was also the same bunch that Gov. Robert DANIELL was sent to NC to deal with in the late1600's, where he met Martha WAINWRIGHT and later married her. The Tuscaroras are related to the Cherokees and they were all part of the same Iroquois Confederation, whose range extended well into Canada, hence the Canadian connection to this bunch. The five original nations of the Iroquois Confederation were the Onondagas, Oneidas, Mohawks, Cayugas and Senecas. History says in 1712 they united with the Tuscaroras and then they were called the six Nations. Sir William Johnson says in his History of the Iroquois, the Tuscaroras were not invited to physically join with the five nations until 1753. Some did and the rest were re-located by the US Government in 1804. Since they were in Eastern NC tribe, they could have well married into the DANIEL family or they could have taken that name when they migrated south, later. My maternal 3rd GGM was Mary E., supposedly a full blooded Tuscarora Indian lass married James E. ROBINSON, Sr. (1752-1852) RS-NC in 1777. James was from Pitt County, NC and she was from Onslow, as the story goes. I think his father was William ROBINSON of Pitt County, NC and William has quite a few connections to the DANIELS of that area. This olive skin I have, dark hair and brown eyes sure did not come from my father's side which includes the DANIELS. They were as fair as a ghost. This Indian ancestry seems not to have hurt James's children since their youngest son, my 2nd GGF, James E. ROBINSON, Jr. (1792-1877) was a county judge in Wayne County, GA and GA State Representative. James, Jr. also married well, Easter O'STEEN, d/o the Hon. John A. O'STEEN, Sr. and Ada WEEKS. Ada's father, Silas WEEKS was killed in the RW in 1777. The WEEKS were from Falmouth, Barnstable County, MA and Easter's brother was US District Judge, John A. O'STEEN, Jr. who lived in Savannah and their father a county judge and GA state representative, like James, Jr. . It also seems not to have made them buddy-buddy with the Seminoles who lived along the GA-FL border because they had a big fight with them in the Wayne County, GA area in the 1830's. The Nancy ROBINSON home, where a massacre occurred in 1837, is on display at the Okefeenokee State Park in Ware County, GA. Nancy was out of the same ROBINSON bunch that migrated from Pitt County, NC to Burke and Washington County, GA after the RW and then, later, to Wayne, later Charlton County, GA. The ROBINSONS were a real political power in Charlton County, GA for years to come. Some also might want to know the WAINWRIGHT family of Pitt County, NC also came south with the ROBINSONS and were closely collateral with them later in Wayne and Charlton County, GA. This is just one of the reasons I have looked so closely at the Robert DANIELL and Martha WAINWRIGHT family for possibly connections to my DANIEL bunch. John R. 1. [DANIEL-L] DANIELs on Indian census
    2. Martha Boggs
    3. For anyone who may be tracking Cherokee ancestors named DANIEL. A census of Cherokees in Arkansas in 1860 gives these: DANIEL, J., age 45, born Kentucky, farmer of the Canadian Cherokee DANIELS, Ruben, age 70, born South Carolina, farmer of the Going Snake Cherokee DANIEL, Martha A., age 56, born South Carolina, housekeeper of the Delaware Cherokee All these lived in Arkansas County, Arkansas. 3. Brenda, SPAM is a difficult problem for all of us - I get from 50 to 75 SPAM messages a day. If you can find a way to keep them from getting in your inbox, then copyright that idea and sell it. There is no easy way to keep SPAM out of your inbox. Payne seems to think they got his email address from the DANIEL list, but not so. They probably got it off his website or where he left it as a contact address on another website. Nobody has access to your email address on the DANIEL list but me and Rootsweb and we do not sell or give it to anybody. It would violate Rootsweb's Privacy Agreements.. There are programs out there that will limit the number of SPAM messages you receive but they also delete some messages that you did not want deleted. You can also forget that No-SPAM Registry, just like the Anti-Call Telephone Registry. I think those suckers sell your name, address and phone numbers to anybody that will buy them. And, if you were not on their SPAM list before, you will be after you register with these registries. <grin> The only way do get rid of these SPAM messages is the old fashion way - delete them with a click of the mouse. You can use Message Rules in Outlook Express to automatically delete messages that contain certain keywords but these Spammers have already figured ways around any keyword search by changing the subject line from "Viagra" to "V.I.A.G.R.A," etc. Mine catches the dummies but the smart persons get by this check in a heart beat. Also, no matter what we do, these folks, often poor little old ladies or disabled fellows living in a mobile home, will find a way to circumvent keyword searchers, blocked sender lists, etc. Until the Congress passes laws that will provide for economic sanctions against Internet Service Providers or Domain Registrants for the conduct of those using their services, there is not a lot you can do about SPAMERS. However, these person can just a quickly switch to a new ISP or use an overseas ISP where US Law cannot reach them. This is why I limit who receive my primary email address. Also, when I am posting an email address to a website, I use my Hotmail address. Also, if you have a website never link your primary email address directly on the website but use a web driven form to feed any contacts information back to you. The reason is SPAMERS have robots that go from website to website looking for any email addresses contained on a website. These folks are smart, crafty, have reasonably good computer equipment and have a lot more time than they have money. That latter commodity is what they want from you. <grin> As for what you can do about SPAM essages - little or nothing, except never respond to one and delete any and all that come in to your mailbox. Most of these folks work on a .5 to 1.5% return from any message they send, so if they do not get any responses, they quickly drop off your email address. The only problem, there are lots of these folks out there and they probably trade email address lists between each other. What the Feds need to do is put a few of these folks in jail and I think will do as much as anything else to reduce the number of SPAM messages we get. However, what do they do -- they prosecute people like Bill GATES and Martha STEWART - high profile targets. Did you know the Clinton Administration spent more money prosecuting Microsoft from 1993 to 2001 than it did in pursuing Usama Bin Laden? One of the main reasons SPAM and viruses are such a problem, today, is because the Clinton Administration was able to coerce the US Courts into forcing Microsoft to release parts of the code for their operating systems to their competitors, whose minions later put critical parts of it the public domain. Once you have the keys to the backdoor, why bother about opening the lock on the front door? I guess it all shows where their priorities were........ So much for SPAM on the DANIEL list. John R. 1. [DANIEL-L] A word to the wise
    2. Payne Daniel
    3. I have received a scam letter from a lady in Nigeria (Ivory Coast) and suspect that she has more email addresses of our Daniel folks. DO NOT Respond to her. A word to the wise should be sufficient. Sorry John, this was a must in my belief. Payne

    3. Kevin, The names that caught my attention was those COLLINS names on that 1786 Orange County, VA list, one of which was a John COLLINS. A John COLLINS was supposedly the father of Nancy Ann COLLINS who married Rev. Nicholas MURPHEY (1782-1851) of Augusta and their two girls supposedly married two of my DANIEL boys from Burke County, Ga. I assume you noticed how far Robert DANIEL was from William DANIEL on this list. My brother and I do not always get along but we usually signed things in tandem - me, first, him, second. <grin> . The oldest always has certain prerogatives, right? <grin> However, if you look at it, overall, their names were almost at the same height and about even, left to right, with each other. They may have signed it in row order and not column order even though it is broken up into two distinct columns. The names that caught my attention around Robert were John WILLIAMS, Thomas COOK, Thomas LANDRUM, Joseph BELL, Rob't DANIEL, Sugar (?) MALONEY and Thomas SMITH. One other name I saw on this list was that of a William TERRELL. If that was the William TERRELL (1731-1812) that married Frances WINGFIELD then there are real possibilities, here. Also notice the Stephen THWEATT who signed the document right above William DANIEL and what appears to be Joseph BUCKNER down one line or so from William DANIEL. I saved a copy of the high resolution image if anybody wants to look at it. It is named OrangeVA1786-3.jpg. Just ask me for a copy. They are big files. (350K or more). John R. 3. Mike, I assume that was Orange County, VA, right? I also hope none of you are missing the Battle of Antietam (17 Sep 1862) and Wheatfield (2 Jul 1863) on the History Channel, tonight. My great-grand uncle, Louis L. RENEAU, was 1st SGT Company E, 6th AL and was with John Brown GORDON at the Sunken Road. His older brother had been killed three days earlier at the Battle of South Mountain in the 50th GA.. Louis would die the following spring at Chancelorsville. The following show covers the Battle for the Wheatfield which occurred on 2 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg. My grand uncle, Charles W. RICHTER, Jr. was permanently disabled at the Wheatfield as a member of the 3rd GA. Charles, a college professor of mathematics, was confined for most of his remaining life to a wheel chair. John R.
