Payne, If the Tabley DANIELL bunch went anywhere, it would have been to New England, and not Virginia. As another researcher stated so eloquently, VA was where the "riff-raff" went. We know the Tabley DANIELLS were supposedly tied to the GROSVENORS and the GROSVENORS did migrate to New England (Roxbury, MA). We also know they were later collateral with a DANIEL family of the same area. That DANIEL family, if anything, may be the source of any of any Tabley DANIELL in America and not VA, as you note. However, this Massachusetts DANIEL family could be a completely different DANIEL family because this DANIEL family was probably from the Norfolk or Suffolk areas of England and the over Tabley bunch was from Over Tabley, Cheshire, England. Regardless, Leicester and Richard are big names in the descendants of John GROSVENOR, Sr. (1640-1691) and Esther CLARKE of Roxbury, Suffolk County, MA. Notice the location where they lived -- it has the same county name as where the Robert DANIEL family was from in England. Leicester GROSVENOR, Sr. (1675-1759) and Rebecca WALDO of Pomfret, Windham County, CT are two of the primary ancestors of most GROSVENORS in America. Leicester GROSVENOR, Sr. and Rebecca WALDO are my wife's 6th GGP. Also, William GROSVENOR, Jr., Leicester's older brother died in Charleston, SC BEF 16 Jul 1721. Rebecca Waldo GROSVENOR's uncle, Thomas ADAMS, died in Barbados in 1684. I would not be surprised to find the sister of South Carolina's Gov. MOORE, a Dolly CLARK of Boston, was not a part of the Esther CLARKE family, the wife of John GROSVENOR, Sr. My wife is also a WELD descendant from Chelmsford, Middlesex, MA, the ancestral home of the ADAMS and GRAVES families of MA and these WELDS feed right into the David ALDERMAN family of Duplin County, North Carolina. Below is a short pedigree for Leicester GROSVENOR, son of John and grandson of William GROSVENOR. Also, notice the MARBURY in this listing and the MERBURY you have on your website with the Tabley DANIELLS. From this, you can easily see -- my wife also has a few CROOKS in her family, too. <grin> <<< ""In the pedigree entered by Leicester GROSVENOR, her grandson, in 1663, the wife of William GROSVENOR (2) is called 'daughter of CRUCK of Cruckhall in Bridgnorth.' The marriage record in the registers of the parish of St. Leonard, Bridgnorth, calls her 'Ursula BLUNT.' In 1404 Sir Nicholas BLUNT or BLOUNT, who had been involved in a plot for the restoration of King Richard II, changed his name to CROKE, in order to escape punishment from Henry IV; and his descendants appear sometimes under the name of CROKE or CRUKE and sometimes under the name of BLUNT or BLOUNT. In the registers of the parish of St. Leonard both names are found for this family. Members of the BLOUNT family played important parts in English history. Sir Walter BLOUNT, a supporter of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, and of his son, King Henry IV, was slain by Archibald, Earl of Douglas, at the Battle of Shrewsbury, 23 July 1403. He is a prominent character in Shakspere's King Henry IV, Part I. He married Donna Sancha DE AYÁLA, a Spanish lady of high rank, and in the reign of Edward IV their grandson became the first Baron Mountjoy and was Lord High Treasurer of England. William BLOUNT, the fourth Baron Mountjoy, a grandson of the first Baron Mountjoy, was a patron and friend of Erasmus. Mrs. Anne (MARBURY) HUTCHINSON, so famous in the early history of New England, was a descendant of Sir Walter BLOUNT and his wife, Donna Sancha DE AYÁLA, and several New England families may trace their ancestry, through the MARBURY family, to this Shaksperean knight and his Spanish consort. For the BLOUNT family see pedigrees in various English Visitations, articles in the Dictionary of National Biography, and Sir Alexander CROKE's Genealogical History of the CROKE FAmily, surnamed LE BLOUNT." In a message dated 2/27/2004 10:45:55 AM Central Standard Time, gpdfla@tampabay.rr.com writes: > What does "aet. 40, anno, > 08 APL 1665" mean after William DANIEL of Wigan, County Lancaster, England? Well, I went back and looked... duh me... didn't think I did, but left something off. This paper was also signed 08 APL 1665 by William DANIEL. I see now that appears he was age 40 on this date, so not necessarily his birthdate. Then, son William, JR, on the same date was/would have been age 14, thus bc: 1651; and son Henry was/would have been 18 and thus bc: 1647. This paper signed 08 APL 1665, also shows, [Visitation of 1664] that William DANIEL of Wigan was the son of Peter DANIEL, a Captaine of foote in the Army of his late Majestie King Charles the first anno 1643 ~ his siblings were {2} Henry; {3} Richard; {4} Robert; {5} Thomas; {6} John; No {7} and {8} Thomas DANIELL, a Lieutenant in the late Kings Army, slayne at Bruinsford anno 1662 who married Alice SMITH and left son Peter DANIEL, living in 1666. These were children of Peter DANIELL, of Tabley Co. Cest. and his spouse Sarah WILCOCKS, daughter of Richard, Esq. `````````````````````````````````````````````````` `````````````````````````````````````````````````` Visitations of Lancashire,1623 ~ Crest: an UNICORN'S HEAD, etc. Thomas DANIEL of Om., Tabley in Com. Pal. Cestriae, 13 Edw IV (1747) married Blanch, daughter of Piers WARBURTON and they had Piers DANIEL who married Juliana NEWTON. And they had: {1} Thomas DANIEL who married Alice FFOULK, of Chester. and had Peter, b: 1561 of Tabley Co. Cest. Esq. who married Anne MAINWARING. {2} William DANIEL who married first a daughter of Christopher SECONDARY of the court; and married secondly his MAID, then one of these ladies had William DANIEL, JR. [and whom I'm guessing was probably born well before 1600.] ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` The Will you mentioned of William DANIEL who named his son James, is abstracted here in the book AND adjacent to the DANIEL Chapter which leads a novice, of these particular DANIELs, to believe or question.... I have no lineage interest in any of these DANIELs... merely trying to get them all straight in me ole cranium. Thanks for the clarification on William and James... and, like I said this book is difficult to follow, not counting the small print... think it was written by a Philadelphia Lawyer. `````````````````````````````````````````` Are you sure the Parish Register of Christ Church, Middlesex Co, Va. from 1653 to 1812 doesn't mention a son James? [see below] Those marriages on page 330 that I listed, are probably only the ones HAYDEN couldn't connect. Ah ha... pg 294 ~ The DANIEL "disjecta membra"... [told you he was a lawyer] ...given from the church records, at the end of this Daniel line, will show the difficulty of constructing a legitimate pedigree from any one of the early settlers of the name. ~ [And, that be those on pg 330] I did find another "stray" Middlesex Parish marriage: Margaret DANIEL and Henry WARE on 15 AUG 1711 `````````````````````````````````````````` I have Eustace unassigned. He is not Edmund!! Agreed!!! `````````````````````````````````````````` Here's exactly what HAYDEN wrote about James, as to dates ~ I know, Payne, you probably already have... pg 294/95 1. James DANIEL of Middlesex County, Virginia, bc: 1680 ~ d:....... ~ Married 27 JAN 1704, to Margaret VIVIAN, b:...... ~ d: 05 MAY 1727, daughter of John and Margaret VIVIAN of same county. [lists the VIVIAN children, etc. in footnote] NOTE: [pg 294] James DANIEL was ordered by the vestry of Middlesex Parish to procession the land 1724 and 1726. He was therefore a member of the vestry. In 1747, James DANIEL succeeded William DANIEL in the vestry. In 1751 he again processioned the land. [Is this the same William DANIEL who was a member of the vestry back in JUN 1684? Whoa!] Children of James DANIEL and Margaret VIVIAN [M.R. except No. 5.] 2. Susanna DANIEL, m. 17 FEB 1736; Henry MICKELBOROUGH and had Vivian, b: 06 NOV 1736 or 46 (last two figures almost erased), [Susanna] was probably daughter of James combing before James No. 6 ? Robert, No. 286, also probably belongs to James. ```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
This may help to straighten out some of this mess. Cumberland County, VA Marriage Records: Feb. 26, 1753, Vallentine ALLEN & Ann ARNOLD. November 19, 1763, Philip ALLEN & Elizabeth, dau. of Daniel COLEMAN March 28, 1768, William DANIEL & Patty Field ALLEN, dau. of Samuel ALLEN (a) Samuel, Valentine and Phillip ALLEN were brothers. (b) Daniel COLEMAN and a Unity CARROLL are generally the ancestors some list as the ancestors of some of these Greene County, GA COLEMANS. (c) William DANIEL (1739-1797) was the son of William(s) DANIEL and Elizabeth WATKINS of Cumberland County, VA. My comments: 1. These NETHERLANDS (John) moved to Augusta, Richmond County, GA where they tie in with a TINLEY family and in turn my DANIEL bunch. The TINLEYS supposedly came over with Oglethorpe to GA in 1732. 2. Phillip and Valentine's sister, Susannah ALLEN, married a SUBLETT, which points right back into the Manikin Township bunch, which includes my RENEAUS and CHASTAINS, as well as others. 3. Francis MARSHALL is a name in the MARSHALL family of Jefferson County, GA and we know the HATCHERS are around that area, too. 4. Notice the two later marriages to Middlesex County, VA names -- Thomas MONTAGUE and Charles LEE - I wonder? 5. George Walton and Martha HUGHES -- . I think these WALTONS are about as messed up as our DANIELS. It would seem this George WALTON family Cumberland County, VA is related in some way to the Robert WALTON Family, since George (1724-1795) married a Martha HUGHES and Robert WALTON II (1718-ABT 1750) married a Mary Sarah HUGHES, especially since they both lived in Cumberland County, VA. I think it is the same bunch, as such, descendants of some of this bunch feed right into Morgan and Walton County, GA and are collateral with my family. 6. For the most part, these families are from what is generally considered to be part of the WOODSON-DANIEL line or Roger DANIELL line, however, they may point back into the Huguenot families of Manikin Township, VA 7. I have always felt there was possibly something more in Cumberland County, VA, more so than I have seen posted. Your thoughts.... Annie, In regard to Col. William Daniel of Wigan, who by the way, was not William of Middlesex Co., Va., nor William of Mass. His sons William and Henry did not produce any issue. Hayden's Charts are incorrect in some of the lineage lines of the De Tabley Daniels/Danyls. etc. I have the documentation at my web page which is supported by researchers in England. [Hayden's "The Visitation of Lancashire" with respect to William of Wigan is nonsense] To quote a Lancashire Researcher. Notes on Dorothy Forth are below. SHE did not marry William Daniel of Middlesex who is most likely the founder of the Daniel family in Middlesex County, Virginia in 1660. ("A Place in Time, Middlesex County, Virginia, 1650-1750") There is speculation that a Peter Daniel from Scotland was in Middlesex Co., Va., in 1620, but this is quite improvable. Col. William of Wigan married Dorothy Forth, daughter of William Forth Esq. of Wigan, Lancs, about 1646. They had the following children: 175 M i Henry Daniell was born 1647. He died d.s.p. 176 M ii William Daniell was born 1651. He died d.s.p. 177 F iii Dorothy Daniell died as infant. 178 F iv Dorothy Daniell was born 1653. 179 F v Elizabeth Daniell was born 1654. was buried 10 Feb 1730. Elizabeth married (1) Ralph Finch Esq. of Chester. Elizabeth also married (2) John Hutton Esq. of St.Oswald,Cheshire. 180 F vi Mary Daniell was born 1655. 181 F vii Anne Daniell died died young. 182 F viii Helen Daniell was born 1660. Helen married Martin Willis Esq. of Halstead on 14 Apr 1681. Note: Dorety Forth (d/o)William Forth was christened on 6 Aug. 1618 Wigan, Lancashire. Capt. William of Wigan, b. 1626 married Dorothy (d/o William Forth) of Wigan and co-heiress of William of Wigan. She was reported to be buried in 1695, having had 2 sons and 6 girls. This lady (i.e.. Dorothy Forth) bore the arms of Holt and Forth, being granddaughter of - Holt, esq. of Sherington and an heiress. I am not sure what that aet. 14, anno, 08 APL 1665 means but William and Henry died before that date. I think you can be safe with beginning the Daniels of Middlesex with William [Will record: ITEM: I give to my loving son, James Daniell one tract or divident of land which I bought of Joseph Gore, being 1/2 of the land that David Allison dyed possessed of, in the Co. of Middlesex, to him and his heirs forever, lawfully begotten of his body, and for want of such heirs to my son James Daniell and to his heirs lawfully] I see no mystery here. Are you sure the Parish Register of Christ Church, Middlesex Co, Va. from 1653 to 1812 doesn't mention a son James? I have Eustace unassigned. He is not Edmund!! Note: the person who wrote these orders was not consistent in their spelling of any of these names. They use McDONALL on some, DONALLY on others but they appear to be the same family. This is from the Chaulkley book on Augusta County, VA. This book is full of entries for Israel CHRISTIAN and his family, as well as the ALEXANDERS and RAMSEYS, Upper Neck families of an earlier era and before that, Maryland........ JUNE 19, 1764. Annie, That is more or less what I am thinking about some of these Greene County, GA folks. They weren't NC folks, but VA folks and probably a part of that same KDC bunch that came from Ireland to PA to VA and then to GA - KELSO-DANIEL-CUNNINGHAM clan. There are also three other families in this little group, the COFFEES, CARLTONS and the CALDWELLS, so there are lots of "C.'s" in this bunch. I do not know whether Thomas DANIEL (ABT 1740-1813) of Greene County, GA was out of this KDC bunch or not but I think Charles DANIEL (1773-1800) was, because he married a COFFEE. If Thomas was in this bunch and he was, indeed, Charles's father, then my bet is -- he was married to a RANDLE and not a NC BURNEY. The RANDLES are another family that floats with them, as are the RALLS and SANFORDS, all VA folks. One of the GA families I closely monitor is the LAMARS, as some of you know. They were from Frederick County, MD and migrated to Columbia County, GA, as well as other places. I find many things interesting about this LAMAR family but most of all the name of the Clerk of the Court in Frederick County, MD on the 1748 will of Thomas LAMAR II (1686-1749) -- James DARNELL. The reason I find it interesting is because a Morgan County, GA researcher once told me -- "you know we really aren't DANIELS but DARNELLS." I blew it off at the time, but not now. I wonder if some of the DANIEL lines we are seeing in GA are really DARNELL, especially those that kept the "double L" spelling of the name, like some of these Greene County, GA folks did? This would probably go a long way to explain some of what we are seeing with the CALLAWAYS, another MD family, all over some of our DANIEL folks. What we may be seeing is the worst possible of combinations -- McDONALDS who became DANIELS, McDANIELS who became DANIELS, DARNELLS who became DANIELS, O'DANIELS who became DANIELS, DONALDSONS who became DANIELS, DONNELLS who became DANIELS and after several generations when everyone had forgotten the real spellings of their names, they all intermarried. Payne, About Eustace DANIEL.... I just don't know. My DNA from Edmund and TEMBTE line doesn't match the Middlesex as you are aware. After going through the Hayden book which is mostly, or perhaps considered all Middlesex, I'm beginning to believe atleast TWO DIFFERENT DANIEL clans were running in the same crowd in that time period. So, here's probably a repeat of info you have already seen from this "Virginia Genealogies" by Rev Horace E. Hayden, pub: 1891, 1959, 1966, pg 330 ~ this page mentions Eustace DANIEL ~ and all these people might be ones he could not place, [definitely isn't clear to me], and this has probably been circulated a dozen times in the past across the web. "Mr. CONWAY wisely began his chart with James and Margaret [VIVIAN] DANIEL of Middlesex County, 1704. Payne, et. al. To get this to fly, you need to find a way to get Mary Elizabeth COLEMAN born 22 Feb 1764 into Elizabeth COLEMAN (1707-1801), wife of William DANIEL of Caroline County, VA, since this Mary married Jesse CLEMENTS, sister of the Griselle CLEMENTS who married James DANIEL. If you can put this Mary E. COLEMAN into the family of Robert COLEMAN III and Mary CLAYTON, then I think you have the necessary information to put James DANIEL, who married Griselle GLEMENTS, into the family of William DANIEL and Elizabeth COLEMAN...... My riff raff did well in tobacco. Now, answer up Annie and John or anyone else interested. Did William Daniel Jr., and Elizabeth Coleman have a son James, and did that James have a son James who married Grizelle Clements? Mike and I suspect so but we need some documentation. If anyone still has any wind left in their sails, I thought I would pass this on from one of the better genealogical researchers in the country. <grin> Their name with held for the obvious reasons. Linda, I am sure you know, ministers of the gospel of any religion generally moved all over the place, so it is usually hard to track them, as we can sometimes do family migrations. However, most early Presbyterian ministers were trained at the Presbyterian seminary at Princeton University in New Jersey, so you may find some information, there. Presbyterian ministers were not just ordained folks, as often happened in other religions. They were actually college graduate and :educated gentlemen, always. One college the Presbyterians opened in the South to train their ministers was Oglethorpe University, located in Milledgeville, Baldwin County, GA. I do not know where your Isham John DANIEL went to seminary but I am sure he went to one of these two locations, from what I understand about the Presbyterians. One difference I noted between the Presbyterians and my Methodists is -- ten of more years ago I contacted the Methodist Archives in VA, GA and AR about my 2nd GGF, a PE in the Methodist Church, they gave me all of his assignments and everything else they had on him without charge, even though I did have to contact three different archives. From all of this and what I already had on him from family sources, I wrote a short biography of him, which is now in the Archives of the Methodist Church. When I contacted the Presbyterians a few months ago to see what they knew about the minister, then President of Oglethorpe University, who married my grandparents in 1872, they offered to research this person for me for $15 an hour. A little difference there. Maybe even the Methodists now charge for this service, having learned "there is some gold to be found in them thar Methodist minister ancestors." <grin> I also contacted the archivist (twice) at Oglethorpe University, now in Atlanta, about Dr. David WILLS, and they did not even give me the courtesy of a reply. One would think they would have a short biography already prepared about their former President, who they actually list by name on their website. <sigh> John R. Hello all - My 3G grandparents were Isham John DANIEL and Mary Ann RAINEY. They were married 30 Mar 1848 in Sumter Co., AL. According to the Presbyterian (PCA)Historical Center in St. Louis, MO, Isham John DANIEL was a Presbyterian minister. I have found them in the 1870 and 1880 census records for Edwards, Hinds Co., MS. These records all indicate that Isham was born in Alabama around 1829 and his wife in Georgia around 1830. I am trying to look at collaterals in and around this family, so I have checked out the RAINEY/RANEY surname in Georgia from around 1800 to about 1850. While researching I found an interesting marriage record from Pike County, GA in 1842, for a Chesley P. RAINEY to Amanda LYNCH. I know from reading this DANIEL list that the name Chesley shows up among the DANIEL/WOODSON family. Does anyone have any other DANIEL/RAINEY connections? Other collateral surnames in my files on this family include DODGE, GIRARDEAU, MCDOWALL, MCEWEN, MORTON, REINHARDT, SHIELDS, THOMAS, and WITHERSPOON. I know that most of these were Scots-Irish Presbyterians that settled in the Carolinas. Is anyone researching any of these collaterals? Could there be a connection to the Cub Creek Presbyterians?
