Thanks, Mike, A little after my bunch fled the coop for greener pastures down in GAWGA but the names really sound right, don't they? I will pass these two boys on to the LANE bunch and see if we get any hits. We know Bryan LANE was the name of one of Penelope LANE's (1773-1846) siblings. I know in Greene County, NC there is a widow Mary DANIEL and what appears to be her son, James, on various deeds in the late 1700's. I wonder if this is Mary SWAIN and we know she had a son named, James DANIEL. And her deeds start to show up in the late 1780's, which is the time frame they have for the death of her husband, Robert DANIEL (1786). I wonder if my Robert C. DANIEL is the Robert, Jr. of those 1779 Pitt County, NC records and after 1779, Robert, Sr. and Mary moved to Greene County, NC. Do you have any of her deeds or his will? I think I have a few and will look them over and see if I see anything interesting. I am looking for a LANE, BRYAN, THOMPSON, PARKER or DAWSON to a DANIEL family in that neck of the woods.... Thanks, again.... John R. This may be the final clue as to where the Capt. Allen DANIEL family came from. 1786, Journals of Francis Asbury Beverly Allen, soon to become an apostate and a criminal, had not gone to his appointment in Georgia but worked around Cainhoy, South Carolina, and Anson, North Carolina. Asbury apparently did not trust him in spite of his standing and so confided to Bishop Coke. John R. Clarke Thomasville, GA

D's Chapel was Daniels Chapel. Both it and Whitaker's Chapel are located in Halifax County, NC. <<< March 1786, North Carolina Tuesday, 21. Came to Whitaker's chapel, near Fishing Creek, where I spoke, with but little consolation to myself, to about seventy souls. I feel my body unwell; but my soul is stayed in cheerful dependence upon God. Wednesday, 22. Rode to D.'s chapel, where I was met by about fifty hearers: spirituous liquors have greatly injured the people here. >>> John R. Clarke Thomasville, GA
<<< >From the 1786 Journal of Bishop Francis ASBURY South Carolina: Henry Willis was the "presiding elder" of the district which included the Yadkin and Holston circuits covering northern and western North Carolina and all the Holston country of Tennessee and Virginia. [Note: Henry Willis lived in Charleston, SC.] John Fletcher of Madeley died August 14, 1785, in his fifty-sixth year. He was a saintly man, second in the Methodist command, and chosen by Wesley as his successor. He wrote two famous works, Appeal to Matter of Fact and Common Sense, on human depravity, and Checks to Antinomianism, against Calvinism. He marred Mary Bosanquet, who became a preacher and took his place in the parish of Madeley after his death. Leaving Georgetown, Asbury proceeded along his 1785 route until he was within twenty-five miles of Charleston. Then he turned southwest over the Wappetaw Swamp Bridge to Cainhoy, which was inland from Caper's Island and Caper's Inlet on the coast. Between the bridge and Cainhoy lived Captain George Sinclair Capers, the uncle of William Capers who was to become famous as the founder and superintendent of the Plantation Missions and a bishop. Bishop Caper's mother, née Mary Singletary, and her parents are buried at Cainhoy. Bishop Capers says that his father, William Capers, was converted this year under the preaching of Asbury's companion Henry Willis. (Life of William Capers, D.D., autobiography completed by Wightman, 12, 24, 41.) >>> John R. Clarke Thomasville, GA
In 1785, Bishop Francis ASBURY appointed Rev. Beverly ALLEN a Presiding Elder in the Methodist Church in NC. Some other notes from Asbury's Journal, dated December 1785 are listed, below. It must be noted that ALLEN seems to be following the Capt. Allen DANIEL clan, since he was appointed to GA in late 1785 which is about the same time they show up in GA. You see this quite often in early Methodist families - a family migrates to a new location and their Methodist minister relative soon follows. . <<< Came to Newbern.74 Found brothers Allen and Baldwin75 in the church; I preached at three o'clock, on, "The world by wisdom knew not God." The assembly was in session, and some of the members were friendly.76 Wednesday, 21. Sailed down to Beaufort, and preached in the church :77 the people are kind, but have very litthe religion. On the same evening I pushed down to the Straits,78 and the next day preached at the Straits chapel; thence I returned to town, and preached again; after which we sailed back to Colonel Bell's,79 whence we first started. Edward Morris was one of the preachers on the Roanoke Circuit which extended into this section of North Carolina. (See Minutes.) Asbury probably reached Swift's Creek in Pitt County. Since entering North Carolina he had proceeded through the present Gates, Hertford, Bertie, and Edgecomb counties. This whole section was a "swampy route" traversed by the Roanoke, Tar, Neuse, and Pamlico rivers, Swift and Fishing creeks, and other streams. New Bern in Craven County was laid out by Baron Christoph von Graffenried shortly after 1710 and named for the capitol of his native Switzerland. Here was established in 1762 the first school authorized by legislative enactment in North Carolina. Pilmoor preached in New Bern at Christmas in 1772 and stayed with William Wood there. Methodism flourished in the town during the early period, and Asbury frequently visited it. (Account of the Founding of New Bern; Grissom, op. cit., 7, 37, 169, 320.) John Baldwin was serving the Wilmington Circuit. Beverly Allen had been on that circuit the previous year and had remained in North Carolina in 1785 even though he had been appointed to Georgia. (See Minutes; Betts: South Carolina Methodism, 55.) New Bern at this time was the capitol of North Carolina. The church at Beaufort was an Anglican church which was used by preachers of various denominations and also for school purposes. (Grissom, op. cit., 149.) The Straits was a mainland conmmunity fourteen miles by land from Beaufort, bordering the straits of Core Sound. The Straits Chapel was Tabernacle Church, an Anglican meetinghouse. Colonel and Mrs. Bell and Mrs. Bell's sister were the first Methodists in the New Bern area, and Bell's Chapel was one of the first meetinghouses for Methodists. Colonel Bell's two sons, Caleb and Jacob, became Methodist preachers. (Grissom, op. cit., 150.) >>>> John R. Clarke Thomasville, GA
Since there are some DANIEL researchers who also research this name because of its links to the DANIEL family, I feel this information from the Journal of Francis Asbury may help them in their research. <<< John Kimbrough went from Wake County, North Carolina, and settled in the central part of Darlington District south of Cheraw in 1756 >>> John R. Clarke Thomasville, GA
It seems the Salisbury Circuit established by ALLEN was in NC and not VA. Methodism was introduced in Salisbury in 1783 by Beverly Allen, and a circuit was formed with thirty members. An account of the first sermon preached in a schoolhouse there was written by a convert and is preserved in Lednum. (Op. cit., 372-76; Grissom, op. cit., 245-47.) In 1784 Beverly Allen and James Hinton were sent to form a circuit, but their small classes were not permanent. They reported only eighty members in the whole Cape Fear area, and in 1786 Wilmington was merged with the Bladen Circuit. The first class of white people was formed in Wilmington in 1797, and it was said that "the blacks were much more attentive to religion than the whites." (Lee: History of the Methodists, 209; Grissom, op. cit., 219, 224.) John R. Clarke Thomasville, GA
Good Morning, We have looked for a long time for the roots of Capt. Allen DANIEL clan from Madison County, GA. This may be a hint since Rev. Beverly ALLEN was related to them. Bishop ASBURY later defrocked Brother ALLEN for killing a US Marshall in Augusta, GA in 1791. From Chapter #13, of the biography of Brother Francis ASBURY (1784), the founder of the ME Church.... <<< Beverly Allen was on the Salisbury Circuit and James 0. Good Morning, We know that Simon BURNEY, Jr. married Louisa PUGH and that a William WILSON was a son of Sarah DANIEL and John WILSON. This seems to indicate that there was more than a casual link between the BURNEY and T&E DANIEL family, including the BRYANS, PUGHS and the rest of this bunch we seem to know so seem to know so well. Louisa's brother was Stephen PUGH, also listed, and her parents were Hugh PUGH, Jr. and Elizabeth BRYAN (d/o Lewis BRYAN II of Craven County, NC) and grand daughter of Hugh PUGH, Sr, and Penelope CANNON of Pitt County, NC. I am not stating that Simon's sister Sarah BURNEY married Thomas DANIEL, Jr.(ABT 1740-1813) son of T&E, and later of Greene County, GA but it sure looks like promising. Also, there are RANDALS in and around Greene and Wayne County, NC in this same time frame and those stories we hear about the RANDLES later of Greene County, GA being from VA may well just be stories....... <<< CRAVEN COUNTY, NC - COURT - Newbern District Superior Court Criminal Records (1783) Summon SIMON BURNEY,WILLIAM WILSON,STEPHEN GATLIN and STEPHEN PUGH in behalf of State vs DAVID SMITH PITT CO >>> John R.
