Hi List, Has anyone information on the Peter DANIEL listed on the Shelby Co IL 1830 census. He is found on Microfilm 19_23 page 140B. Peter (1761/1770) is listed with 1 male (1801/1810); 1 female (1811/1815), 1 female (1801/1811), & 1 female (1771/1780). I have no idea where he was before 1830. Thanks, Gladys
Good Morning: I knew Etheldred SMITH (ABT 1750-1843) and Noah SMITH (ABT 1775-AFT 1843) of Green County, NC were related. I also knew they followed Robert C. DANIEL (ABT 1765-AFT 1830) to Burke County, GA and then to Jefferson County, GA. The Jordan SMITH listed in this will was Rev. Jordan SMITH (ABT 1777-1835) who married Mary GAINER, d/o William GAINER and Martha WILLIAMS. The GAINERS and WILLIAMS were originally of Petersburg, Surry County, VA and later moved to Davisboro, Washington County, GA. I feel pretty sure there was also a MARSHALL family that was a part of an overall SMITH, GAINER, WILLIAMS and RAIFORD connection because they were all over each other in Jefferson County, GA, besides those names mentioned in the following will. The HUDSON connection in this will of Etheldred SMITH looks very much like the HUDSON boy was a descendant of Robert HUDSON (ABT 1750-ABT 1790) and Rhoda DANIEL (ABT 1755-1792) of Pitt County, NC, later Effingham County, GA because this bunch ties right into the WILLIAMS family, too. I am also pretty sure the ALLENS listed in this will were descendants of Robert ALLEN bunch out of Hanover County, VA, some of which later moved to Richmond County, GA. I also think the R. W. JOHNSON listed was probably R. W. JOHNSTON because folks always seemed to leave out the T in this name. Any information on this bunch is appreciated. <<< Jefferson Co.Georgia Wills (1777-1893) ETHELDRED SMITH 11/18/1843:5/6/1844, p. 288-289 Wife: Nancy. Sons: Noah, Richard. Hi, Dan, Thanks for responding to this inquiry. I can tell you that your John Daniel does NOT descend from Capt. Allen Daniel of Madison County, Georgia. His children were born in Virginia well before 1800, and probably before or right after the Rev War. None of his descendants were ever known to migrate into Tennessee, just west into Mississippi and Texas. This is very good information. However, what one must remember, about Accomack and probably even Northampton is they were eastern shore counties, not connected to VA, proper, but separated from mainland VA by Chesapeake Bay.. I know for a fact that Accomack families are very heavily engaged with family of Fairfax and Prince William County, VA and I assume there would be some connection in these families to Northampton. I would also look for lots of connections in these two counties to DE, MD and that area since they are actually attached to these areas, as opposed to being directly attached to VA. . I would also assume there would be a reasonable number of connections to counties like Essex, Caroline and those areas of VA, since they were located directly across Chesapeake Bay from both counties. However, I would still tend to think they probably had more connections to DE and MD since they were located on the same peninsula as both of these two states because traversing the Chesapeake Bay was not an easy chore for most families and any migration, inland would be occurred along the shorelines of this bay. Hence the reason there are so many connections between the families of Accomack and Fairfax County, VA -- the folks followed the shoreline to the vicinity of Washington and crossed the sound into, VA, proper. The same connections can be said for Prince William County, VA since it is located adjacent to Fairfax. . None of these northern VA counties are probably tied to Southside families of York, Henrico, James City, Charles City, IOW, Surry, etc., loosely or otherwise. These folks are located way down the state, south and east of Richmond -- pretty near the NC line. That's a long ways from the other locations since Washington is about 100 miles from Richmond and these counties, south and east of Richmond. I am sure there was probably some ties between the outer island counties, like Accomack and Northampton and the mainland, that Chesapeake Bay was not a easy body of water to traverse in those days and most links would probably have occurred with families located to their north in DE and MD, as well as across the sound at one of its narrower points located to the north. It must be remembered, the land body composing most of current Accomack and Northampton are at the end of the Delaware and Maryland peninsula and not on the land mass of VA, proper. In 1634, Accomack County, VA composed most of this whole peninsula and Northampton was not split off until 1643. At the same time (1743) Charles River parish was renamed, York, so York was not one of the original eight VA parishes or counties. The original eight counties of VA in 1634 (also called shires or parishes) were Charles City, Elizabeth City, Henrico, James City, Accomack, Charles River, Warrosquyoake, and Warwick River. Also, remember the name of Accomack county was later changed to Northampton and then later Northampton was split up into Northampton and Accomack counties. John R. There were probably multiple Thomas Daniels - but it was also very common for the same individuals to appear on several different land grants as being transported by the grantee. I counted one group - the exact same list of 8 people (none Daniel) - on 7 separate grants. Thanks Ken and Mike.... Regarding the "transports" ~ that's about how I had figured... and sorta reminds me of the Civil War... first one side, then the other... gotta get more land. If no one minds, I'll probably go ahead at some point and send the rest of the DANIELLs listed in the C & P Books... maybe their "seagoing companions" will offer up some clues. Below might help someone ~ Permission to post from Ginny Keefer who originally placed it on the Lincoln County, Tennessee list. <ginnykeefer@comcast.net> Heritage Book of Union County, South Carolina, with McDANIEL's in it. Lemuel McDANIEL, Sr, born 1796 and died 1886, of Ireland. His wife, Mary, was born 1794 and died in 1885. The potato famine caused them to leave their beloved Ireland to come to America in 1820. From Ireland they are said to have journeyed to Scotland then come to Pennsylvania, and the Allegheny Mountains, stopping at Hickory, NC. They have no idea of how long this family stayed in either place. They arrived in Pinckneyville, SC, before the census of 1850 with their children; John age 19, Julianna age 14, Mitchell age 12 and Lemuel age 10. They laborered as planters and belonged to Mt Tabor Presbyterian Church then joined Mr. Vernon Presbyterian Church in Union Co. It was from Pinckneyville that their sons, John and Lemuel Jr volunteered to join the War between the states on April 13, 1861. John was killed in service and Lemuel Sr. and Mary took four of his children into their home to raise. During the Civil War, Lemuel and Mary had moved into Union Co SC just below the present site of Rosemont Cemetery. It was here that Lemuel Jr returned after the surrender and engaged himself in Harvesting grain. He fell in love with one of the HUMPHRIES twin girls, Medora HUMPHRIES. They soon married. Madora was born December 16, 1846 and died October 22, 1922. To them were born nine children. Two died in infancy and seven lived to adulthood and married. They were; Ida, John Rufus, Robert Lee, Victoria, Kate, Lucy, and Mary Ann "Mame". Medora and Lemuel Jr are buried at Sardis Church Cemetery.

Annie, Here is a good article on the headrights system; how it started, ended and the abuses it was subject to: http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/local/va4_headrights.htm Mike Daniel
Annie, Headrights have been one of the most misinterpreted of early colonial records. A headright could be generated every time an individual entered a colony so if an individual came to Virginia, returned to England to conduct business or visit family, then returned to Virginia, there could be two separate headright claims. It's documented that some individuals crossed the Atlantic multiple times. I've seen a deposition from a woman, in her 70s I believe, who testified in a court case that she had crossed the Atlantic 5 times. It's also easy for us to forget that the colonies were separate. If a Virginian, perhaps even a native born one, went south to North Carolina, then returned to Virginia, that counted as an entry into Virginia - another headright could be claimed. Then, of course, there was also some outright fraud going on. Someone would take a headright claim to officials in one county to get land, then go to another county to get more land on the same claim. One wa! y I try to distinguish between a multiple entry and possible fraud is to see how many of the other names in the set match. It's unlikely that the same set of 12 to 20 people would be travelling together on multiple trips. Another problem with headrights is that the person who eventually made the claim for the land was often not the one who actually transported them. Headrights were a form of currency. They were transferable and could be bought, sold, traded, perhaps even multiple times. Finally, the dates only tell you the date the headright was being claimed, not the actual date of transport. The headrights didn't expire and some were held and possibly passed around for decades before they were "cashed in" by the current owner. The only thing for certain is that transport occurred prior to the claim. So, with regard to the six headrights for a "Thomas Daniell", there may have been multiple individuals or multiple entries to Virginia (or combination of the two), and there is no certainty of any direct relationship between the claimant and the persons transported - maybe there was, maybe there wasn't. It's only a clue that can be used in combination with other records (deeds, church registers, wills, etc) to see if there was a relationship. I found the following transcription of a Daniel Bible record on the Lee County, Mississippi GenWeb Page at URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mslee/jhdanielbible.html The "Nattie" Gholston mentioned was a gr grandson of Dabney Gholston of Madison County, Georgia, and Dabney was also a 3rd gr grandfather of mine. Payne, There is one thingy I noticed while reading and typing out these lists of "incoming shipments" and that is, they ALL have double Ls in their names.... so, shouldn't we dismiss the theory of "certain families only used..... " or, this being an indication from where a certain person belonged in the scheme of things??? And, I have what is probably a "duh" question to the list..... <g> [Keeping in mind, I haven't sent all DANIELLs in the first book as yet.] Question: There are six "THOMAS DANIELL" names in the first book.... as having arrived in 1649, 1653, 1657, and three of 'em in 1664. Does this mean that SIX DIFFERENT men with the name of THOMAS DANIELL came in these years? Wasn't there something illegal about being used more than once in order for someone to receive land? What have I missed? What sez a particular person did indeed do service for their benefactor in payment of their passage? No doubt people sometimes returned to their original home soil, and with some coming back to the colonies...... I'm discovering that "things" haven't really changed in the last 300 years, just getting worse... as to when it comes to doing the right thing, whether on the law books or not... so, why not in these cases also?
