MS Lucy, I have not been seeing anything interesting to me lately on the DANIEL list, so I thought I would concentrate on a small area to see what I could find. That's the bad thing about working on only one list, you get dead ended because there is not any new information. I have seen some very interesting links, lately. Some of these LANES I have really been beating on have links not only to GA but IN and OH, too. Very interesting. Makes one wonder if some of their collateral DANIELS did not go the same route. I have also seen many errors in assignments and backed up with wills and deeds, too. I still have not seen a think on Aaron and Betsy Whitfield DANIEL and I sure have looked. I think the WHITFIELDS, BRYANS or BRYANTS and SMITHS are some real big players in this bunch. I have also corrected a lot of "open" assignments in my PAF, where I had a son but no parent. One interesting connection I saw today was the NEWITT, DREW and SMITH family connections back into the LANES. ISHAMS in this bunch, too. A lot of common given names in this bunch and these are some of the same names in the Greene County, NC SMITH family. I think Nicholas and Elizabeth FLOOD were the ancestor of many of these SMITHS and her sister, Jane FLOOD, married Thomas LANE, Jr. One of the real interesting connection out of this SMITH family is Nicky's son, William SMITH of Brunswick County, VA married Ann ISHAM and they had a Cuthbert, Isham and Josiah SMITH. Josiah SMITH married Elizabeth COLLIER and guess where her brother, Vines COLLIER (1735-1795) died? Oglethorpe County, GA and guess where he was buried at? Salem Church, where my HUNTERS of Oglethorpe County, GA are buried. Very, Very, interesting...... Now guess who Vines COLLIER married -- a Sarah Elizabeth WILLIAMSON. I cannot tie her back to Col. Micagah WILLIAMSON (1744-1796) but it sure smells like the same bunch since Micagah lived in Wilkes County, GA, the next county over from Oglethorpe. And, if I can roll these SMITHS and VINES back into the LANES, then I really have a strong connection back into the WILLIAMSONS and through them into the LAMARS, BIRDS and others. We already know the DREWS are all over many of these same families. Ann DREW married Benjamin LANE and her mother was a Newitt and Newitt LANE is a fellow close to Isham LANE of Greene County, NC. Benjamin was a son of Joseph LANE, Sr. and Julian JARRELL and brother of Joseph LANE, Jr. who married Patience McKINNE....I am pretty sure my Isham (1730-1801) is probably from around this bunch, too many ISHAMS for him not to be out of this LANE family, somewhere...... I will be honest with you, the WEBBS and REDDICKS are all over this bunch up there. Where do you think Rev. Reddick PIERCE got his given name, the LOVICKS, too, since Reddick's brother was Lovick PIERCE. Lovick and Reddick's grandmother was Martha ANDREWS, sister of Lt. Edmund ANDREWS whose daughter, Pricilla, married William DANIEL, son of Capt. Robert Lanier DANIEL of Pitt. The PIERCES were of Halifax County, NC, too. What I have really noticed is all of the MERCES all over this bunch, too, and old Silas and Jesse were floating in this bunch, too. I do not know whether there are two or more DANIEL families operating up there or not but I always like to go with the simplest explanation -- there was one..... but that does not mean there was not more than one up there. I will be sending an update for the Daniel DNA Project, soon. Results are coming back VERY slowly from the lab. There is other interesting news to report, but I wanted to include some results, too. Most viruses are targeted at Windows OSes. Permissions on Linux file systems do not allow viruses to install the programs on these systems, that you see on Windows systems, where basically everyone in your address book is sent contaminated email with you as the source. These viruses use weaknesses inherent in the WIndows OSes and Outlook which do not exist in Linux/UNIX. "There are about 60,000 viruses known for Windows, 40 or so for the Macintosh, about 5 for commercial Unix versions, and perhaps 40 for Linux. Most of the Windows viruses are not important, but many hundreds have caused widespread damage. Two or three of the Macintosh viruses were widespread enough to be of importance. None of the Unix or Linux viruses became widespread - most were confined to the laboratory." There is a really good article on Windows versus Linux virus vulnerabilities at: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/56/33226.html I also hardened my system with Bastille and use a firewall router. It is very unlikely that a Linux system would be spreading viruses to Windows machines unless the mail user was logged in as the root user OR was manually forwarding a message with an infected attachment. I set up a few simple filters and I get almost no spam email, maybe 10-12 per week, and have never detected an attempt by a virus to compromise my system, though I have automated scans running. I highly recommend Linux desktops for those who are tired of problems with viruses and spam. Lindows is a good choice for Windows users who are not technical. Walmart is selling some good systems preloaded with Linux for the average user, for under $300. Kevin John R. I assume you mean this deed, right? If so, do you know how may Eastern NC DANIEL families these names connect to? The BRADFORDS are all over the MARSHALLS, PAULKS, MARSH, LANES (Sarah BRADFORD married Joseph LANE III), GRIFFIN, MOORE, MOYES (Sarah BRADFORD married Capt. George MOYE of Pitt). The KINCHENS are tied to the PETERSONS who are, in turn, tied to the THWEATTS and MITCHELLS. PARKERS and GIBSONS are all over a lot of this bunch, including mine and my 2nd GGM was a LANE. my GGA, Amelia DANIEL married a William P. TAYLOR and a Ransom PETERSON was living with my GGF DANIEL as his overseer in 1860. If this is the Thomas DAVIS that I think it is, Thomas DAVIS, Sr. (1701-1778) of Surry County, VA then it is very important, since this Thomas was the son of James DAVIS and Elizabeth WARREN of Surry County, VA. Anyway, Thomas and Elizabeth's daughter, Mary DAVIS, married Samuel TARVER II of Surry County, VA, later Northampton County, NC. Mary DAVIS's siblings married heavy into the PHILLIPS family of Surry County, VA -- children of John PHILLIPS and Hannah FORT. Hannah was the d/o of John FORT and Elizabeth JORDAN of Surry. Do you want me to tell you who John and Elizabeth's kids married. This whole deed is who's-who in these IOW families, as I see it........ I do not think anyone even commented on the Joseph WATTS name in one of those deeds. Please remember that Josiah is usually derived from Joseph. Payne, There are two Joseph LANES. Col. Joel was a son of "Junior" (1710-1776) and Patience McKINNE (1715-1759), d/o Col. Barnabus and Mary . His parents were Joseph LANE, Sr. (b. 1665) and Julian JARRELL of Halifax County, NC. Joseph, Sr. was a son of Thomas LANE, Sr. (1634-1708/9) and Elizabeth SHEPPARD nee JONES. So the LANE linage of Col Joel LANE was (Joseph, Jr., Joseph, Sr., Thomas, Sr.). Joel married Mary HINTON, d/o Col. John HINTON, Sr. and Grizelle KIMBROUGH. Do you remember that Grizelle CLEMENTS, what do you want to bet it does not flow back into this bunch. I still think these LANES all flow back to Southside into the early ISHAM, LANE, RANDOLPH and CLEMENTS connections we see, there. Some of the RANDLES we later see down in Greene County, GA have often stated they thought their RANDLES may well have been RANDOLPH, at some point. John R. Payne, Did changing your address help eliminate the spam? I am really getting tired of all the spam I have to try to block every morning and evening. What really gets me, the 73 year old widow, is really bad sex related ones. I am afraid if I go to the trouble to change my e-mail address they (whoever they are) will get the new one. I also get several notices a week of Norton Anti Virus picking up virus infected e-mails. I don't recognize the addresses so they must also be part of the same group sending the other trash. What has happened to John? I don't see his answer to e-mails very often. Robert, What is interesting is this puts Phillip RAIFORD III right in the middle of a bunch of other North Carolina and IOW DANIELS and not the England to Charleston connection that others have listed for him. Remember, it was his grandson, Phillip V, that married the daughter of William DANIEL (O'DANIEL) and Lucretia BELL of Edgefield, SC. It makes this a whole lot more interesting since Lucretia BELL's family was just across the border in Southside, as well as the THREEWITS, et. al.. John R. John, This Philip RAIFORD, the third, appears to be the Philip who married Martha WESTON. He was born Abt 1689 in Isle of Wight, VA and died Abt 1747 in what is now Richland Co., SC. Raiford researchers track the this line back to Philip WRAYFORD, b. 1623, Crediton, Devonshire, England (Philip WRAYFORD, the first). From the notes of Raiford researchers: Philip and his wife Martha migrated to the fork of Congaree and Wateree Rivers and settled on the creek named for them, "Raiford Creek", now Mill Creek. They were among the very first settlers in Richland County. Philip III came soon after his father's death in North Carolina and on January 6,1740 Certified 450 acres on Mill Creek below Bluff Road. Three days later, he obtained 300 acres more. (History of Richland County, p. 27}. He and Martha appear as married in a 1724 Bertie Co. N.C. deed in 1720 (p108). His will was probated 25 Feb 1747 in Charleston, South Carolina, Will Book 1747 1752, page 61-63. Wit.: Thomas Hodge, James Henderson, John Handyside. Ex.: Wife & son Philip. Son-in-law: John Pearson (m. Mary Raiford). Wife: Martha. sons: Philip, Isaac,. Daughters: Ann, Grace, Patience, Christian. This is written about Philip's nephew William RAIFORD, Jr.: "The descendants of William, Jr. are legion, and for the majority of them in the succeeding three or four generations, their residences remained in either Isle or Wight or Southampton County throughout their lives. For this chief reason, the descendants of William, Jr. have always been referred to as the "Virginia Raifords;" whereas the descendants of William, Sr.'s brother, Matthew have become known as the "North Carolina Raifords," and the descendants of brother Philip, the "South Carolina Raifords." The following 1800 census transcription was originally posted on the Old Pendleton District mailing list. Thought it might be useful to those on the Daniel-L whose Daniel line might originally have been "McDaniel" since listers have discussed that possibility before. He is found on Microfilm 19_23 page 140B. Peter (1761/1770) is listed with 1 male (1801/1810); 1 female (1811/1815), 1 female (1801/1811), & 1 female (1771/1780). I have no idea where he was before 1830.
