John, I confess that I have never understood your animosity toward folks who sell convenience for a profit. A good part of American business does that in one form or another. Why are these folks evil for doing likewise - I don't get it and never have. And based on many of your posts, I suspect that you have been looking in their store windows and kicking their tires quite a lot over the years. Oh...and I am sorry that I did this in two messages, but consider this a postscript: The previous message can be considered my final word on the subject (now there is an oxymoron, isn't it?). I won't discuss it further, because I think our purpose here is genealogy, not ranting. Bill ----- Original Message ----- From: "John R. This whole discussion is getting a little silly. Yes, Ancestry.com collects information, which they then turn around and sell. What do you expect? Do you think any company, or anyone else for that matter, would do your research for you for free? What do you think professional genealogists have been doing for years? They have been collecting information and selling it to you. Personally, I have submitted my information to World Connects. I sent it prior to Ancestry taking over Rootsweb, but I have continued to update it since, and will continue to do so. I have benefited immensely by so doing in that mistakes have been corrected, and I have found many new friends and relatives researching the same line. My research has expanded by leaps and bounds. While we're on the subject, have you ever wondered why Ancestry took over Rootsweb? We, the genealogical public, never supported Rootsweb strongly enough for it to survive as a non-profit organization. It depended on our contributions, both money and data. I contributed both, but not enough of us supported them monetarily. As to Ancestry having no competitors...What about GenCircles, Family Tree Maker, GenServe, National Genealogical Society, etc., etc.? There are many sources out there, Ancestry is just one, and they have never forced anyone to contribute to their data bases. If you don't want to share your "hard-earned data" with them, don't. I have and will continue to do so. We'll see who benefits the most in the long run. Finally, no, I didn't know the owners of Ancestry were the biggest owners of gambling enterprises on the strip in Las Vegas, and now that I have been told, my next question is...so what? What does that have to do with anything? Do we really want to go back to the "good old days," where we each had to travel to the countless archives scattered around the country (not to mention the world)? In my humble opinion, the answer is a resounding "NO!" Bill

This is a post I sent to another and I think it is self-explanatory. Yes, the family GEDCOMS at Ancestry and World Connect are free, but it is also free to "look in store windows," "kick the tires on new cars" and even "browse through houses listed by real estate agents." These free databases at both Ancestry and World Connect are nothing more than "teasers" to get your genealogical information (for free) and to get you and others to subscribe to their services at Ancestry.... This is all a financial gamble on their part but after all they are in the gambling business, too, since they are also the biggest owners of gambling enterprises on the strip in Las Vegas. Bet you did not know that, did you? <<< As you know Ancestry, really the LDS Church, owns both Ancestry, Rootsweb and FHC and they commingle Rootsweb's World Connect databases in their databases at Ancestry. Ancestry is just a money making endeavor for them and they use Rootsweb as a "loss-leader" for their profit making Ancestry.com. However, we have also seen the recent commercialization of Rootsweb in the years since they bought it out, through pop-up adds and other items which make this resource much slower than it use to be. I guess you could say, they will soon combine these two genealogical resources and Rootsweb will then loose its distinct identity and will become just another function of Ancestry. I think you are already seeing some of this and I think within two years, this merging will be complete, as they will even start to include country and state archives, as well as country files, into their databases at Ancestry. That would justify charging more for their product at Ancestry, a product which will then include what many persons have worked very hard to build "for free" over the years -- the country and state archives managed through the auspices of the US GENWEB Project.. >>> John R. Good Morning, I have known for a long time the Jeptha Vining HARRIS family of Morgan County, GA was close to my bunch in Madison, Morgan County, GA but did not know the interconnections. Now, I do, at least one of them. Jeptha Vining HARRIS (1782-1856) was the son of Walton HARRIS and Rebecca Louise LANIER of Greene County, GA. He married Sarah HUNT of Morgan County, GA, the d/o Richardson HUNT and Nancy Martin CARTER. His brother was Nathan HARRIS, Sr. who married Mrs. Elizabeth STERNS. Their daughter, Mary "Polly" HARRIS nee JARVIS who married, second, Valentine CROOK of Oglethorpe County, GA. She had previously married Jesse JARVIS and she was the mother of a James JARVIS, per her 1856 will, which was probated in Oglethorpe County, GA. Valentine CROOK was the brother of Lewis CROOK who migrated to Raleigh, MS and his family ties into my RICHTER family of Morgan County, GA through the WILLIAMS family of Meridian, Lauderdale County, MS. I also think this "Valentine" name may be part of the Valentine WHITE family which I think is also the ancestors of the Benjamin V. WHITE family of Meridian, MS, which is also tied to my bunch, there. NOTE: the sister of Walton HARRIS (1738-1809), Martha "Patsy" HARRIS (1742-BEF 1781), married Daniel COLEMAN, Jr. (ABT 1741-1785) the son of Daniel COLEMAN, Sr. and Unity CARROLL of Warren County, NC. His brother, Eden COLEMAN (ABT 1764-1817) married Nancy Ann DANIEL of Greene County, GA who some say was a d/o Thomas DANIEL and Sarah BURNEY or a Sarah RANDLE.. This whole bunch ends up in Greene and Oglethorpe County, GA and later in Morgan and elsewhere. Walton and Martha "Patsy" HARRIS were the children of Capt. Nathan HARRIS and Catherine WALTON of Brunswick County, VA, later Greenville County, VA. Catherine was the d/o Gent. George WALTON and Elizabeth ROWE of St. Andrews Parish, Brunswick Co., VA and sister of the Hon. Isaac Rowe WALTON, Esq. Another family tied to this bunch and my RICHTER bunch are the WYCHE and WINDSOR families that are collateral with this bunch. General Jeptha Vining HARRIS is buried just a few steps from my RICHTER great-grandparents in Madison, Morgan County, GA. Any thoughts you have on this are appreciated...... Ok you guys perhaps someone may reconize these names. Some of my Daniel line was in Davidson county, TN. which part of Davidson is now a part of Overton county, TN. Basil and Barton Daniel, Old Delilah Daniel that migrated to Illinois were once in Davidson county. Does anyone reconize any of these people, also some of them state they are from South Carolina? Good Morning. One comment on a previous post to the DANIEL List. I did some double checking and there were PEEKE and PEEK families around some of this bunch in the Bertie-Edgecombe area. I do not know whether the PEELE we see is the same IOW family we see tied to William DANIEL of IOW/Bertie County or not, or whether transcribers have commingled the two families. On another subject. We have known for a long time about the Frederick O'DANIEL (1731-BEF 1773) and Charity WHITFIELD family of the Bertie, Edgecombe and Duplin areas of NC. However, that family is expanding to include many of the families that are known to be around some of the DANIEL family of that same area. We now know that Frederick was the son of Owen O'DANIEL who is found in the Cassia Swamp area of Bertie County, NC as early as 1724. He seems to have been a land surveyor of sorts but he also owned lots of land in that area. . I already have deeds which seem to imply his family may have been connected in some way to the KING, WYNN, DAWSON, SESSION, RAWLS, TARVER, STEVENS, GOFF, HURST, WILLS, LEE, MOORE, WILLIAMS and WILLSON families. We already know that two of Frederick O'DANIEL's children married into the HERRING and GRADY families of that same area and there is some indication they may even be tied to the RICKS family of that area. There are also deeds in which Owen O'DANIEL and William DANIEL of Bertie County, NC are on the same deeds and I do not know if they were out of the same family or not. We know one of the primary locations which fed this area was Accomack County, VA and we also know the O'DANIEL Family of Fairfax County, VA lived at one time in Accomack County, VA before migrating to Fairfax County, VA . However, we do not know if the family of Owen O'DANIEL of Bertie and the O'DANIELS of Fairfax County, VA are one in the same family or not. However, there are deeds in Bertie that seem to indicate,at least two of the families we see tied to the O'DANIEL family of Edgefield County, SC (the WATSONS and EDWARDS families) are involved in deeds and court orders with this O'DANIEL bunch in eastern North Carolina in an earlier time frame. This is especially important since the ancestor of both Thomas DANIEL (1686-1749) who married Elizabeth LANIER and Simon DANIEL (1678-1763) who married Elizabeth ROGERS, was supposedly an Owen DANIEL and this Owen O'DANIEL would have been born in the right time to have been either this Owen or his father. The POLLOCKS are also all in this mess, especially through the WESTS, and we know that Gov. Thomas POLLOCK (1656-1722) was appointed the guardian of same, Thomas DANIEL, after the death of his father, Owen DANIEL, in 1700. I do think the WILLIAMS family of IOW County, VA may well be a key family link, since they seem to be around the DANIEL family, there, and this O'DANIEL family of Bertie and I assume, Edgecombe and Duplin, later. The DAWSONS may also play a part in this family because they are tied to many of the same families, including the McKINNIES, KINCHENS and ALSTONS we see tied to some of these other close DANIEL families, especially Col John DAWSON (ABT 1680- ABT 1750) who married both a Charity ALSTON (d/o John and Mary CLARK) and Elizabeth THOMAS. Charity also married a Richard HILLIARD. Another key family may be the HURSTS. The HURST family is tied to the GUNNELLS and SUMMERS families and in turn, the O'DANIEL, family of Fairfax County, VA. In NC they are tied to the McKINNIES and SUMNER family of that area and I think they moved to Emanuel County, GA were we also find the MOXLEY family, another name tied to the Fairfax County, VA O'DANIEL family. If I were to guess, I would say there is probably a pretty good chance they are out of the same overall O'DANIEL family but I have nothing to prove that relationship at this point. Some of these deeds are listed below. I also do not know if the O'DANIEL name was a result of clerks transcribing their name, incorrectly, or whether their actual name was actually O'DANIEL. However, since some of these records involve surveys and patents, I tend to think the latter. If you have other deeds which include any of these families, I think we need to look at them based on this new information. What may be the indications are -- these O'DANIELS migrated from England via Ireland to the seashore areas of NJ or MD, where some parts of this family stayed in that area and some migrated to the Accomack County, VA area. Later, this VA family split up with some parts of the family moving west into Fairfax County, VA and others moving with the great influx of other families that migrated to eastern NC. However, as usual, they carried along certain families with them, so they have common families in both locations and they later combined, once again, later in both GA and SC. <<< John Edwards & Wife To Peter Stancell Know all men by these presents that I John Edwards & Elizabeth my wife do firmly by these presents Constitute Authorize and ordain in my Names & Head my trusty and well beloved friend Peter Stancell, Our true & lawfull Attorney to Acknowledge a certain Tract of land in Bertie Prect. This is a poor transcription of a Bertie County, NC deed because it is PEELE and not PEEKE but you see this kind of stuff all the time. I think he was mentioned in another PEELE deed which I posted several days ago. It is probably FOSTER, too and not FORESTER. I think some of these transcribers ought to go back to grammar school. <grin> I love the description of this land that was sold to William DANIEL - there is not one. Good Morning: The key family in some of these Eastern NC folks may well be the family of John WILLIAMS, Sr. and Ann or Mary WHITNEY of Lower Parish, IOW County, VA. Some want to show them as being from York County, when they may have been at one time, but I am pretty sure they or their descendants end up in IOW. This is why we have not been able to make any sense of this mess. I do not know whether the following are children of John, Sr. or his son, John, II but I think, John II based upon their DOB's Anyway, let's assume for the moment they were children of John WILLIAMS II and he may have even married a WHITNEY or WHITLEY. Regardless, their children: 1. Ann WILLIAMS b. ABT 1690 married Samuel HERRING b. ABT 1682 in IOW County, VA. She died AFT 1769 in ,Wayne County, NC 2. Mary WILLIAMS b. ABT 1690 married his brother, Abraham HERRING b. ABT 1684 in IOW County, VA. This is not fixed in stone but it seems to be that way. Abraham HERRING died in Bertie County, NC. 3. John WILLIAMS (maybe IV) b. 1679 married Mary KEELING b: 26 SEP 1684 4. Theophilus WILLIAMS -- I would almost bet some of this family was tied to the PUGHS because Theophuilus was a big name in that family. The reason this WILLIAMS family is important is because Mary WILLIAMS married John DANIELL II and her sister, Sarah WILLIAMS married William DANIELL and these folks were from York County, VA whose families often migrated into IOW. Once we tie in John WILLIAMS and Mary KEELING family into this eastern NC bunch it starts to make a lot more sense because we start picking up names that are also down in NC, as well as GA, especially those big COFFEE and GRAVES connections. Some of these names are also names on Bertie area deed, too but not the COFFEE and the GRAVES.... I am not against the possibility that the William DANIEL we see later in Bertie County, NC, who is tied to the same locations and deeds in which Owen O'DANIEL is included, is not a descendant of this DANIEL family. I am also not against the idea this Owen O'DANIEL, who was the father of Frederick O'DANIEL who married Charity WHITFIELD, is not related to this DANIEL family in some way. The reason being -- Owen O'DANIEL and William DANIEL are on many of the early (pre-1730) deeds of the same families and lived very close together, although their names were spelled, differently, on the deeds they were both on. Maybe someone has some thoughts on this. Somewhere in all of this mess is the truth but I only have a partial glimpse of it..... John R. Clarke Thomasville, GA
Who is this Lt. Robin DANIEL? It cannot be the Robin DANIEL who was the son of Josiah DANIEL and Elizabeth KEY of Granville County, NC because he was born in 1787, as the story goes. . The Hon. Whitmell HILL, Esq. (1742-1797) mentioned in this statement was the son of Col., John HILL and Martha WHITMELL and these were all Bertie and Edgecombe County, NC folks. Whitmell HILL married Winifred BLOUNT, d.o Thomas BLOUNT and Elizabeth WHITMELL of Bertie, later Edgecombe County, NC. However, Elizabeth WHITMELL married, first, George POLLOCK (1699-1736), son of Gov. Thomas POLLOCK and Martha CULLEN but George died BEF 1736 after which she married Thomas BLOUNT (1708-1746) and they had two children, Winifred (b. 1743) and Joseph (b. 1745). After Thomas died in 1746, she married William WILLIAMS and they had several children - one of her sons married Charity Alston DAWSON, another son married a WILLIAMS girl and her daughter married John JOHNSTON. The HARDISON listed in this statement has to be the father/uncle of Luke HARDISON born ABT 1780 in Martin County, NC who married Elizabeth DANIEL, d/o William DANIEL and Pricilla ANDREWS of Martin County, NC Benjamin HARDISON was born ABT 1715 and married Elizabeth DUGGAN, d/o William DUGGAN and Mary SMITHWICK Contrary to some, I have assigned William DANIEL, Sr. to Robert DANIEL and Mary SWAIN of Martin County, NC in my database and not Capt. Robert Lanier DANIEL and UNK of Pitt County, NC - these Roberts were, we think, first cousins, so it is still the same "overall family." I think Robin DANIEL was Robert DANIELL, Jr. son of Robert DANIEL and Mary SWAIN of Pitt County, NC and he did not die in the RW. I think the Michael LITTLE is related to William LITTLE but this family is just about as big a mess as some of ours. <grin> I am also not sure this old man made a mistake and this is not Michael HILL instead of Michael LITTLE. <<< EXTRACT OF SWORN STATEMENT OF DANIEL ROBASON, SENIOR A two-page handwritten instrument signed by his "mark", witnessed by Lawrence Cherry (Chairman of Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions), dated 8 October 1832, in Martin County; his amended statement, dated 18 Mar 1833, witnessed by James Burroughs, JP (Justice of Peace): I was born in Martin County, but have no record of my age because I was released by my father at age 21, and I am now about 74 years (SIC: born circa 1758-1759). I served in the Revolutionary War for about eight months: as a volunteer in Captain Michael Little's Company and stationed in Wilmington, NC, for about three months; took part in the Battle of Guilford Court House, under Captain Benjamin Hardison, Lt. Robin Daniel, in Regt. commanded by Colonel Whitmell Hill, Colonel Kenneth McKensie, Major John Everett, in the Army commanded by General Greene. I was discharged at Ramsay's Mill, on Haw River, after about three months; later, I volunteered under Capt. Cone at Halifax, and then under Col. Coleman on the Cape Fear River, for about two months. I have received regular discharges at the termination of each tour but I have either lost or mislaid them not estimating them to be of much importance. Various Records in the File The record contained several official documents indicating that she had drawn an annual widow's pension of $26.64, retroactive to 4 March 1836. The last voucher, dated 23 January 1849, was for that same amount. It would seem, therefore, that she died soon after that date; also, based on her 1845 statement, she would have been born circa 1759-1761. Following those entries, which are semi-literate in nature extended for the period thru 1843. The underscoring was provided by the contributor to emphasize the obvious. Son Bryant, spelled as Robertson in the Bible four times. Also, in his statement of 1845, eh first signed as Bryant Robertson which was lined thru and then signed as Bryant Robeson. This latter signature (a) was likely made to conform to the spelling used by his mother, and (b) supports the fact that Daniel (Sr.), if not others among his children, spelled the family name inter-changeably as Robason, Robason and also Robertson. Further, Daniel's brothers spelled the name as Robertson in their official Revolutionary War records. It is not clear just which of the children of Daniel removed to TN with his wife Elizabeth (Griffin). Based on the military service of Daniel (Sr.), his male descendents are eligible for membership in the Sons of the Revolution (SR) and the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR); his female descendents are eligible for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR >>> John R. I want to know who the following Elizabeth SMITH is. I think she is the Elizabeth WHITFIELD who married John SMITH II and they lived, according to most, in Smithfield, Johnston County, NC. These deeds involve land in the area of Grinnal's or Grindall's Creek, Pitt County, NC which runs from Pitt into Craven and is near Fort Barnwell, NC. Who these folks are, those that I know: James BARROW was the father of Samuel BARROW. I cannot find out Lemuel JAMES connection to this bunch but he did have a son, Matthew JAMES who married Mary ALBRITTON, g/d James. James ALBRITTON married Elizabeth LANIER, d/o John LANIER III and Elizabeth BIRD of Surry County, VA. Elizabeth had a brother named, Lemuel LANIER, who married an Elizabeth PETERS and moved to Burke County, GA, so the Lemuel name is around this bunch. Good Morning, This is a very interesting set of orders from Johnston County , NC. There are no DANIELS listed in these orders but every one of these families are collateral with them in some way or another. The John TARVER listed has to be John, son of Samuel 1 and Mary BOYCE, and he married Sarah ROGERS of Surry County, VA and her brother was the Aaron ROGERS listed in these deeds. Notice also Stephen PETTYPOOL listed in this order. His daughter, Elizabeth married Simon DANIEL, Jr. the son of Simon DANIEL, Sr. and Elizabeth ROGERS. A round robin to me on this whole family. I do not know who William HINTON was but he has to be related to Col. John HINTON, Sr. who was married to Grizelle KIMBROUGH in some way - possibly a brother of John. I would not bet the John CLARK listed is not the father or brother of Gen. Elijah CLARKE (1733-1799) of GA, either, since his oldest boy was named, John. The James WOOTEN listed was James the son of Richard WOOTEN, Jr. and Lucy COUNCIL of IOW County, VA. James married Faitha ROGERS, who has to be a sister of Aaron and Sarah ROGERS, previously mentioned. What I find interesting is the HOLLIMAN listed in these deeds. Martha "Patsy" HOLLIMAN born 1768 in NC married Samuel COLEMAN, son of Daniel COLEMAN, Sr. and Unity CARROLL. His brother was Eden COLEMAN who married Nancy Ann DANIEL in Greene County, GA. Nancy is supposedly the daughter of Thomas DANIEL and Sarah BURNEY of Greene County, GA. The PRICES mentioned in these orders have to be related in some way to the Rice PRICE, later of Washington County, GA who married Mary Jane WHITFIELD, because the WHITFIELDS are tied all over PETTYPOOL deeds. The LOWREYS are also tied to the LANES of Wake County, NC and they, in turn, back to the HINTONS. I think we are looking at a portion of this whole bunch and they are all inter-connected but they are all a part of the same IOW bunch. <<< 1759 At a court held at Hintons Corner, south side of Nuse River. Mike, I agree, something just does not smell right about this bunch as they are currently laid out. I do not know if they were a part of the same IOW bunch or not. Let's take T&E's kids and the order of their birth. The oldest is Robert, named for her father, Robert LANIER. Their second son is named John - was this John named for his father? Their third boy is William, possibly named for Thomas's oldest brother? Maybe this is our William DANIEL. Now, let's take a look at the girls. The oldest is Sarah, possibly named for Sarah BARKER, the wife of Robert LANIER. Their second girl is named Mary. Was she named for his mother? Their 3rd daughter was named, Elizabeth. I think that Simon of Edgecombe. Thomas of Tyrrell, John or Northampton and possibly this William are related but are they siblings, cousins or a combination, thereof. DNA analysis will not answer this one, either...... John R.
