    1. [DANIEL] Alexander & Amos Daniel in Washington Co., GA
    2. I thought I was really onto something in Washington Co., GA - in finding Alexander Daniel, the brother of my James Daniel in the 1830 census and surmising from the other census records that correlated with their ages correctly that they were the sons of Amos Daniel, who was the son of Nathan who was the son of Joseph Daniel & Sarah Barnes. I'm writing to report that that is NOT the case. I found Amos Daniel, age 83, b. in NC in the 1850 Sumter Co., GA census living with his son Alexander, 50yrs old and his family. Alexander was listed on the index of the 1840 Sumter Census too, and believe that Amos must be on the census too for that year. I'm posting my other findings here in hopes that it will help other researchers of the line. I have little doubt that my James and Alexander are also part of the Joseph Daniel & Sarah Barnes line - just not sons of Amos. >From 1850 Sumter Co., GA Census - they were not listed in the 1860 Sumter census Alexander Daniel, 50 yrs, b. GA, Farmer Nancy, 42, GA Benj., 17, GA Asenith, 16, GA - m. William P. Duncan 3 May 1852 #1, Leonard Parker #2, 13 Nov 1866 Louisa, 11, GA - m. Nathaniel C. Duncan 1# m. 4 Sep 1858, m. M.R. Westbrook #2 Elizabeth, 9, GA - m. Nathaniel C. Duncan on 19 Nov 1856. Amos Daniel, 83, NC - wife was Mary Fenn, dau. of Zacharias Fenn Benj. Daniel, 29, GA Caroline Wilkinson, 23, GA In addition I found that John P. Duncan married Sarah H. Daniel (nee Gibson) dau. of Ellenor M. Gibson and widow of James K. Daniel. Ruth in Portland, OR

The course was the NGS American Genealogy Course and it was an excellent course on all of the major records types and repositories used in the U. S. It was a combination of correspondence lessons with field work (visiting courthouses, archives, etc. to do research) and writing. It took me a little over a year to complete and it taught me a little humility - I thought that I was already fairly knowledgeable about research. What was really cool was that right after I finished that course, I went up to Samford University in Birmingham, AL, for the Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research and took the week long Advanced Research Methodology course with Elizabeth Shown Mills. That, too, was a marvelous course, and I am starting to think that I might get to understand this stuff.
